Although I don't play Warcraft III anymore, it's worth the $40. I find it fun because there's lots of battles and adventure. I'm pretty sure Starcraft has the same thing, so if you like Starcraft, you'll like Warcraft. Look up reviews on the net, it's useful when you want to know what a game is like. ;)

I like it cause it has a huge storyline (which is later continued in world of warcaft),a awesome and easy to use world editor and cool campaings
Why its fun? well playing with friends is always fun
It is realy simple, you might like it and you might not
so if you like Starcraft, you'll like Warcraft
and if you like both you'l like diablo :P

It's worth the money. I like Starcraft and Warcraft, but they're definately not the same. Not by a long shot. But it's worth the money. Campaign is fun, nice cinematics, melee is fun, and if you end up liking DotA you'll love bnet.

Here's what I like about War3, and I'm going to assume that you're familiar with PC games enough to know the difference between RTS, RPG, etc. War3 combines the hero element from the RPG environment with the strategy of RTS. This makes for slower gameplay than a typical RTS game like Starcraft, but faster gameplay than an RPG like Diablo.
That's not to say it's less challenging, or slower, there's actually a LOT to do as you're engaging in battle with someone. Because units cost more, they tend to be more valuable and worth saving in many cases. Additionally, because it involves experience-gaining, suiciding units into your opponent's base all game doesn't exactly work out in War3.
Yeah, it's worth it though. ... ... the game, I mean, not suicide... .. .

You should've got the expansion, too. Definitely worth the money.
Warcraft 3 is terrible. All I can think about when playing it is "I really wish I was playing StarCraft right now...".

Yea,in the expansion you have a Orc "campaing" in a rpg style
It has 3 parts and you will definetly enjoy it when you play it.

Fun, but it still won't beat old Warcraft 2.

Let's get real, Fratt'. WC2-BtDP might still be fun to play occasionally but SC-BW is way better (in balance terms plus playability) and even in the same series WC3-TFT also largely surpassed it in innovation terms. :P
WC3-TFT is quite a nice game that, has Proz' already brought up, successfully introduces the hero RPG element into the RTS genre. And even though the game might not be exactly balanced the 1.22 patch that we hear about might fix many of the abuses yelled by the community.
Another thing awfully pleasant is the game plot n' story despite being terribly resemblant to the one in SC-BW if you strip it into the basics (the fight against an evil race while in the between a good character gets corrupted and in the end overthrows its evil master by being far more devious). :)

If you are a fan of Tolkienesque fantasy and RTS games, then you will find this enjoyable. I do not know however, why you are spending $40 on just WC3 when you can get it, with the expansion in the battle chest for $25 off Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Blizzard-Entertainment-020626720892-Warcraft-Battle/dp/B00009ECGK).

It's quite a good game. Melee gameplay isn't quite SC:BW quality (but then, that's also just about the highest bar anything could possibly be set to), but it's still pretty good. The custom games list is pretty corrupted with too much DotA Allstars everywhere (at least vastly exceeding what the map quality warrants), but if you know where to look (Hint: Azeroth gateway!) you can find some good stuff.

Yeah, well, if you're thinking that, then you should be playing Starcraft and not Warcraft 3. That's kind of like saying, "All I think about when eating cake is 'I really wish I was eating apple pie.'"
I'd -rep you if that was possible. Don't make stupid arguments.

I was at a friends house... He had WC3, but no SC. I bought SC for him the next day. Now he doesn't play WC3 anymore. :D

But does he regret buying it? Just because you don't play it anymore doesn't mean it's not worth getting. I don't play it that much anymore either.

Considering the company he keeps (being you), I'm not surprised he plays SC more than War3. Still doesn't make a good argument. Obviously you have a bias. There's no reason to believe it hasn't transferred to your buddy.
I mean, good for you and your friend that you both have a game you both like to play (presumably with or against each other). Personally, I got bored with SC right about a year after War3 came out. I mean, I gave it its due time and effort, and I was pretty damn good at it, but there really wasn't much to it for me after playing it for a good 7+ years.
Still, I think SC is a terrific game. There's nothing wrong with War3 either. Your bias, however, is more than obvious. Your arguments against it are stupid and have no basis in actual fact beyond the preferences of you and some other guy you know. So, let me reiterate.
Don't make stupid arguments.

Hey, we don't need to be arguing at all! Come on, everyone knows SC and WC fans will always be fighting, but the purpose of this topic was a survey to see whether it was worth fenix's money to get a new game or not.
Main point: It's not an argument over which is better. Just because one game is terrific doesn't mean that you have to stop getting new games.

I can give you a single reason to buy this game- NOTD:Aftermath
Best damn UMS map I have ever played. Great whether you are playing by yourself or with a group of buddies.

Period. (Particularly the music.)

Wow. I didn't think that wIII had such a large fan base. It always seemed like there were less people on TFT on Bnet than BW. A lot less. And all of my friends who've played both agree, play Warcraft for the story, play Starcraft for the Story PLUS everything else.
So I voted OK on that note, because I love the lore of Warcraft III and The Frozen Throne, but the story, setting, and capabilities of Starcraft and Brood War are just more up my alley.
EDIT: Capabilities as in Star Edit and it's variations. Much easier to grasp for me than the Warcraft Editor. I just couldn't catch onto it as easily. I hope to God that the SCII Editor is more like SC than WC.

About the editor, it's a lot difficult to learn. The only thing I know after a month playing around with WE is some triggers and Custom Units
WC3 WE is much, much more powerful than SC's. You can see this reflected in custom maps such as DoTA, with the custom spells, abilities, triggers, skins, etc. While it is difficult to use, if you look at some of the code posted in the map forge, it just looks like modified Visual Basic.
I'm not gonna argue about which game is better because I like both, but they play different due to the heroes and creeps, which is a nice change. Plus, the ladder system on BNET for WC3 is just awesome, still miles and miles ahead of even ICCUP since it's integrated and you don't have to spend time looking for a game on your own.
Oh, and if anyone starts playing on azeroth due to this thread, hit me up grogthecorrupt@azeroth. I'm always looking for good games.

It has it's own dedicated forum on this site. Of course it's fuckin fun. We don't have this forum so we can just sit and whine about how utterly pointless it is and how we believe that Blizzard made it just to piss us off or as some shittily elaborate way of marketing WoW.

Yes, but playing video games doesnt mean that you know code. To someone that never had an opportunity to learn Visual Basic, it is still a foreign language at best.
Visual Basic is the most used programming language in the world. If anything, it should be modeled after VB just for that reason alone - to ease the adoption of the mapping utility and quickly get people making new custom maps for it.
I honestly can't think of any smarter way to approach the problem. I mean, yeah it sucks, but with such advanced features, there's no other way except making UI for it that would take years and years to create. By the time that was done, the game would already be outdated.

Glad to hear you like it! Go to the Azeroth gateway on BNet and look for Grogthecorrupt or Toma. That's Grog. I'm Prozerran on Azeroth. When you have an account set up, come back here and post in the WC3 profile thread with your user name. That way, people can add you and whenever you're on, you can play it multiplayer or just watch some games for a while if you're still new and learning. Whatever you want to do, just have fun!
