View Full Version : Will custom maps keep their starcraft feel?

Something I am concerned about is that once SC2 comes out, people will spam the place up with tower defenses instead of more creative defenses like we've seen in SC1. I really don't want this to happen-- A few are fine, but their just so similar to eachother. The older defenses were always so different from one-another, of course you had your subcategories(sunken, lurker, bunker, etc) but tower defenses are just one big subcategory.

I for one will attempt to create defenses similar to the olden days, but I wonder if map creators will take the easy way out and just make a bunch of towers.

Post your thoughts, along with anything else you fear might be lost in the transition.

Why would they?

*cough*warcraft3*cough*

*cough*editor with new features as seen in world edit*cough*

*cough*will it fall into the same trap since it is far easier to make a bunch of towers than figure out how to use the units in new ways to create fun defenses*cough*

*cough*maybe I'm just paranoid*cough*

*cough*I need to get this cold checked out*cough*

Obviously there will be spammed tower defenses (or w/e defenses, as there aren't exactly... towers), but in time, as people learn how to use the editor more efficiently, there will be things like "Anti-gravity defense" and "Mothership Rampage" etc.

I fully expect there to be fastest maps and DotA games within a week of its release, but what can you do? I'm sure some cool stuff will come out of it.

Indeed, Just because some people want to spam up the map pool with generic tower D, doesn't mean that clever and inventive people will not come up with new ways to use interesting units.
For example...What do you guys think about a map where you use anti-grav on Banelings to kill air targets, because I will put a "kill units at location"+Air trigger that will kill the Banelings as you lift them, allowing you to splash the air units.

While it WILL be easier, perhaps, to spam tower maps and such, while the new features will improve these, I'm sure there will also be those people who do think outside the box and use these new features to create deeper campaign and story maps, as well as perhaps other features in UMS.

To be honest, giving new functions isn't going to make re-hashed maps any better or worse (although it might add some features that are useful), but to deny those new functions on the basis that it won't stop people playing copy-pasta is an worry that would harm more creative mappers than it would the tower defence players.

Ultimately, it's more down to the users than the programme. SC always seems to have fostered quite a creative community, I can only hope that with the new features added that they can further expand on SC mapping.

Haven't you learned yet that killing exploding units (such as spider mines) doesn't make them do damage?

I'm sure there will be a detonating trigger. And I also foresee a lot more creative maps with the ability creator thing Karune told us about in the latest map-making batch. You could direct your own custom abilities without need of triggers, I believe.

I'm hoping somebody will take advantage of the power of SCUMEdit, however, and create some sort of uber-Diplomacy game.

Dude, don't worry, the elite of UMS mapping will make some kick ass maps.
It might take a while for the first good defense map to come out, but I say it will be made by E.X.C.I.T.I.N.G. If you haven't played any of his maps, you are nub!

For the record, right now banelings can attack like mines when they are levitated.

Meaning you wont even need triggers if this remains the same upon release.

That's why I said that having a trigger that kills banelings is not going to do anything.

Well, then put in a bunch of observers right above them with an observer for the zerg team as well. The banelings will float, attack the observers, and then everything will respawn and to you it'll just look like a bunch of banelings exploding. There, that wasn't so hard.

AS I recall, they said that banelings exploded and did damage when they died.
Perhaps I am wrong...I remember hearing about it somewhere...

I'm pretty sure they don't.

They do damage when they hit, as that would be infinitely more balanced, and would make more sense. I thought you learned your lesson when I told you that spider mines don't do damage when they die. :P

Seeing as how "nullify" defense is going to be FUN! Walls everywhere.
