=====Backstory and Setting=====

In 1988, The USSR sent two probes towards one of the moons of Mars, known as Phobos. They lost contact with the first probe shortly after it entered the vicinity of Mars with a total loss of data. The second probe faired only slightly better, as it was able to take a few pictures, readings, and scans of the Martian moon before its mysterious demise that the Soviet Union covered up as a simple malfunction. The last image the probe captured before the Russians lost contact with it was a picture of a projectile heading towards the probe, and the shadow of said projectile along the Martian surface. The results of the readings and scans obtained from the probe baffled Russian scientists for nearly a decade before they finally decided to share the results of their probe's scans with U.S. scientists.

The initial scans revealed that the surface of Phobos was composed of carbon-rich rock and covered in a fine dust, yet the overall density and mass of Phobos was significantly less than and inconsistent with any known celestial formation of this type. The fact that this layer of dust has stayed attached to Phobos has baffled scientists since the moon has virtually zero gravity due to its low density and being only 22 kilometers in diameter. Infrared scans of the moon, enhanced through NASA computers revealed the reason behind the moon's low density-- a vast and layered grid-like canal (or corridor) system that runs through the entirety of the interior of the moon. The appearance of horizontal cracks or canals along the surface is a direct result of the interior frame-work of Phobos and deterioration of dust along one edge near the top of the large crater has begun to show a more metallic composition.

The year is now 2012 and for the past 14 years the U.S. and Russian governments have been studying Phobos through back channeled covert operations, usually piggy-backed on legitimately approved Mars exploration missions such as the Mars Express spacecraft, the Mars Rovers, the Mars Lander, and more recently the planned manned mission to Mars, whose real mission goal is the landing and exploration of Phobos.

The crew of the Inter-orbitary Spacecraft Revelation (the first spaceship of it's class-- meant for long-term space travel and human sustainability) consists of a joint task force of Russian and American scientists as well as some of most highly trained military personnel, specifically trained over the last ten years for this mission. Although, the soldiers have trained for ten years, and the scientists have studied the Martian moon for twice as long, nothing can truly prepare them for what lays ahead-- Phobos, which they determined some time ago was an alien construct of truly ancient proportions that is emitting an abnormally large amount of radiation.

From past encounters with Phobos, they know that the moon has an automatic self-defense system that will target and shoot down any probe that gets within a certain distance of the surface of Phobos. It has been determined that the defense system is actually based on Mars, buried deep beneath the surface and fires a high energy beam from the planet to any object that approaches Phobos. Because of this, counter measures have been drawn-up and successfully tested. The Revelation will enter a high orbit around Mars that is geosynchronous with the much lower orbit of Phobos, which will keep Phobos directly between the Revelation and Mars. With the proper speed and vector approach adjustments it is possible for a probe to reach Phobos without triggering the defense system, or in this case, it's possible for the Phobos All-Terrain Multi-purpose Exploration Vehicle (PATMEV for short) to reach Phobos.

The government has already completed the CGI rendering of the astronauts' landing on Mars in hopes that they can somehow appease the public's outrage over this 1.2 trillion dollar endeavor that most people find pointless and a waste of tax-payers' money. On top of 1.2 trillion that the U.S. taxpayers have knowingly invested in this project that they know nothing about, there has been a constant flow of over 100 billion dollars per year that the U.S. government has funneled into this project through funding bills for the war in Iraq and the war on drugs, among other funding bills such as education, Medicare, and social-security. The digital reel has been cued up and is ready to broadcast the faux Mars landing, as the real Revelation crew prepares to launch PATMEV towards what they believe to be a hatch or entrance-point hidden beneath the dusty Phobos surface. Tension is high as nobody on board really knows what they are going to find on, or more appropriately, in Phobos.

=====Rules=====

Any character created for this RP can be used by any of the people in this RP as long as all characters are kept in-character and do not kill off someone else's character. Because of this, it would be wise to fill out your History/Experience part of the character sheet as thoroughly as possible so other people that use your character in their post will have a better idea of his/her personality and how to use him/her. If someone has a problem with how their character is being used please post it in an out-of-character (OOC) post or PM the person that used your character to let them know what you dislike about how your character was used.

Non-player characters (NPCs) exist as part of the crew of the Revelation and will not be joining us in the PATMEV launch to Phobos. Feel free to use them when necessary.

Once a few people join, feel free to interact with their characters or even the NPCs and get to know each other (expectations, fears, implications to man-kind, religious implications, anticipation, feelings about deceiving the public, etc..) as we prepare to launch PATMEV towards Phobos. Everyone is currently on-board the Revelation, having just entered high orbit above Mars, shadowing the orbit of Phobos. Also, feel free to describe the Revelation in any way you see fit, and remember, this joint U.S.-Russian project has had more funding than any mission ever undertaken by any government.

Name: James Ariston

Nationality and Crew Type: American, Military

Gender: Male

Age: 34

Appearance: James is not a vain man, but he believes he is moderately handsome, and has never been self conscious. He stands just over 6 feet tall, with short cropped blond hair, fiercely intelligent emerald eyes, and a moderately tan complexion. He is strong, but is built for endurance, being very toned and lean. He is known for his grace, and for the lithe ease with which he moves. His most distinguishing feature (in his opinion) is the scar that follows his left cheekbone almost exactly.

History/Experience: James was born into a military family, his father being a Lieutenant in the military, while his mother was a house wife. They raised him and his sister Jaine to the best of their ability, considering they moved almost constantly. James began to show his almost eerie intelligence when he was merely a child, learning to read at a very early age, showing an affinity for technology, and excelling at math and science, having learned basic algebra before he joined kindergarten. His father always was very proud of him, and was the one who shaped James' basic life philosophy 'To better train the mind, you must train the body.'

He began an exercise routine in middle school, which included swimming, running, resistance training, weight lifting, and wrestling. His father, an accomplished martial artist, schooled him in 'Jeet Kun Do', which means 'Way of the Intercepting Fist'. He honed his reflexes, and his mind, until both were lightning quick and rigged for a hair trigger. By the time he was supposed to have been a freshman, he was attending MIT and acing most of his classes, and although he was too young to participate in sports, he continued his exercise routines.

Fast forwarding a few years, he graduated MIT as Valedictorian, with several degrees, including degrees in Math and Physics. He immediately joined the Airforce with his fathers praise, and began designing munitions, airplanes, and learning to be a pilot all at the same time. Astonishingly, piloting aircraft was something that was not easy for him. He suffered from a mild case of vertigo, and he became nauseous while performing anything more than simple aerial maneuvers. He quickly became disillusioned with flying, and concentrated on weapons training which he loved. He became proficient with all forms of firearms, and he especially loved demolitions because of all the chemistry involved. After mastering weapons training, he decided that he wanted to continue into the next frontier, Space. His father cheered him on the entire time.

He was more than intelligent enough, and his physical fitness was excellent. They trained him for roughly two years before his first foray into space. There, he began Zero-G training, something he thought was odd but enjoyed nonetheless.

Roughly two years before the mission to Phobos, NASA officials came to him and asked him if he wanted to participate in a classified Mars mission. They said they desired a practical but intelligent operative who had intimate knowledge of not only science and math, but an extensive knowledge of militant practices as well. He accepted without hesitation.

Name: Natalya Petronovic

Nationality and Crew Type: Russian Scientist

Gender: Female

Age: 35

Appearance: 5'10", tall, and slender, and although a perfect specimen of Russian beauty, Natalya gives little credence or attention to her looks. As a younger lady, she had beautiful flowing blonde hair, which she now cuts short as a matter of convenience. She considers wearing make-up a waste of time and the last time she wore it was 2 years ago at her father's 70th birthday gala and has no plans of ever wearing it again, except possibly at his 80th. She has little tolerance for any obstacles that may obstruct her goal, ranging from "making herself up" to working with incompetent colleagues.

History/Experience: Natalya lived a sheltered life for the better part of her childhood. Daughter to the former head of the KGB who also happened to be a personal friend of Russian Premier Alexei Nikolayevich Kosygin, Natalya was one of the few priviledged children to be privately schooled at the Kremlin. Since the age of 7, she has lived 11 months out of every year at the Kremlin, spending only 1 month a year with her father, and becoming the perfect daughter of communism-- disassociated with family and living her life for the Motherland, which in this case, had actually become her sole mother figure.

By the time she was 12, she could speak 4 different languages, including English, Chinese, German, and of course Russian. By the age of 15, she had what would amount to a Bachelor's degree in Physics. She went on to study higher physics, including astrophysics, fluidic dynamics, relativity, and even began design on higher electronic circuitry, which for some odd reason she found relaxing.

At the age of twenty, she enhanced the Soviet's GPS satellite network by redesigning the internal circuitry of the satellites' positioning transmitters to account for frame-dragging and the Lense-Thirring effect as set out by the theory of general relativity. Shortly after completing her GPS project, she was commisioned by the Kremlin to help analyze the data received from the Phobos probe, and has been working on the project ever since. In fact, it was her trajectory calculations that were used to safely get a probe to the surface of Phobos, and are the same calculations that will be used to determine PATMEV's trajectory.

Name: William Parker

Nationality and Crew Type: American, United States Army Ranger, Captain

Gender: Male

Age: 25

Appearance: 6' 4", Slightly muscular, brown hair, blue eyes.

History/Experience: Having enlisting in the army, he went straight to Fort Benning for the Land Warrior program saved for the United States Army Rangers. He had fantastic results in the Land Warrior program, only the army started to train Rangers and other special forces to Land Warrior. The Army soon related to vehicles to assist on intel, how ever this has never worked in space.

He has seen action in Iraq only to assassinate a high level terrorist leader. Also he has attacked terrorists inside Afghanistan to have great intel on the enemies position. He learned that the Land Warrior was a great system, supplying intel on the enemies current position so he could flank them.

At the age of 10 he noticed that America was almost at war with Russia, so he decided to fight. William stared at the face of death when he was almost struck by a car, but having to break his leg which ruined his sports career.

At the age of 20, William graduated college and enlisted in the army, only to be having sent to the Rangers for passing the physical tests of the Army at record times. William went forward to become an Captain in the army, which he joined in this mission.

Name: Ivan Prokovief

Nationality and Crew Type: Russian, Scientist

Gender: Male

Age: 30

Appearance: Ivan is of average height. He has dark brown hair and dark bushy eyebrows. He has a square jaw. He has no idea of if he is handsome or not.

History/Experience: Ivan grew up Siberia; he excelled in of his classes do to his sole devotion to knowledge and his great memory. He went to collage in Europe learning about the sciences.

In general Ivan’s life has been very uneventful. None of his relative have died unexpected, he’s hasn’t been fired from any job, no love affairs, no great discovers. Most likely the most exciting thing that has ever happed to him was when he was asked to join the mission to Phobos.

Psyche: Ivan always wears a scowl. Maybe it’s because is so anti social that he has never felt happy enough to smile (he’s happiest when he has beaten he rival to a pulp in an intellectual debate), but he knows for a fact that he is not depressed. Ivan only speaks when he needs to, and when he does is with the fewest words possible. Ivan is slow to anger, but when mad he it’s a long time for him to calm down and he will tend to hold a grudge against who ever enraged him.

He has never been fond of other people; he has always believed that they are just distraction. When ever he has had to work with other people he would do the whole project by himself as quickly as possible before anyone else can begin to work. Generally Ivan acts like he is better then everyone else to keep them away from him. He detests people that are smarter then him or better at the things he does, but he will not try to bring them down to he will focus his studies to become better then his superior.

To Ivan religion has all seemed to be a distraction. It makes people believe in false ideas and beings. He is an atheist and believes that religion corrupts every thing. Generally Ivan will keep to himself about his beliefs, but if any one tries to convert him he will get very angry.

Ivan spends most of his free time reading and listening to classical music.

Name: Steven White

Nationality and Crew Type (American or Russian, Military or Scientist): American, Military

Gender: Male

Age: 32

Appearance: Regarded by most people as "above average" in looks. Steven has always hated this, wishing it was just ugly or handsome. He comes in at a very average height of 5' 8". However, what makes it useful in combat is his extremely small weight of barely 130 pounds. His black hair is cut extremely short, but not as short as a marine cut. His eyebrows are quite thin, a contrast from his otherwise hairy body.

History/Experience: White's family history in warfare stretches back to World War I, when his great-grandfather ran away from home to fight in the war. Ever since, all the males in his family have participated in each and every war. His father fought in both the Korean and Vietnam War. White's brothers went to fight in Iraq. Both died from car bombs. However, instead of going to Iraq, White continued extensive training, going to fight with a few special forces units across the globe while he did this.

White was the most fit and most dangerous fighter in his class, able to close the distance between his foes very quickly and quietly and disarm and disable them before they even knew what had happened. For this reason he was selected to participate in the Mars Mission. He hopes that this will restore some family honor, having at least one son come back from a large mission.
