The latest patch allows play without the CD, 1.15.2, I believe. Just install and remove your CD.

If that doesn't work, you're out of luck.

The latest patch, which you should get when you try to connect to Battle.net, will allow you to do this. It tells you how in the patch notes, but all it is is copying the file install.exe from the Brood War disc to your StarCraft folder (in Program Files) and renaming it to broodwar.mpq. Make sure you have "Hide extensions for known types" unchecked under Folder Options.

It says:

Starcraft is unable to read a required file. Your Starcraft CD may not be in
the CDROM drive. Please ensure that the Starcraft disc is in the CDROM
drive and press OK. To leave the program, press Exit.

When i try to enter SC.

First of all you must have the patch installed. Easiest way to do this is to just try and log onto battle.net

If not you can download it from the blizzard home page but you needa make sure you install it correctly.

After that just view the instructions carefully and do exactly that and it should work. If not then just find out what you did wrong.

what pixels posted.
you have to patch BW with the CD in to the latest version 1.15.2, then follow pixel's directions.. turning off "Hide extensions" from the Folder Options menu and dragging over/renaming install.exe to broodwar.mpq - from that point on you won't need the CD.

it's a little hap-hazard but the best they could do without forcing users to run through a new install/upgrade process.

That extension part is key, see this:

On the Mac, install the 1.15.2 patch for your game and then copy the file "Starcraft Archive" or "Broodwar Archive" from the CD into the install folder (the same folder as your save and maps folders).

That is true. But the instructions i was talking about was the little doc the comes with every patch called like Readme or something. But yes you have to change your folder options as well, forgetting that will cause it not to work

I've done all of these steps, but it still doesnt work. =( Do you need to copy the regular Starcraft Install.exe too?

if you want to play SC and not BW, yes

if not, no

Then how do you do it? I've copied install.exe, renamed it BroodWar.mpq, and unchecked hide extensions for known file types.

Did you name it broodwar or BroodWar? It's probably case sensitive.

BroodWar. I copy pasted. This is really annoying. Do I change the name to BroodWar.mpq, or just BroodWar?

try broodwar.mpq instead of capitalizing.

Still doesn't work. I also tried various capitalizations of the word broodwar.

Install.exe from the Brood War CD only applies to Brood War.

Are you copying from the Brood War CD and playing Brood War?

Yes, I am.

Well, an alternative would be to make an ISO of your Brood War CD and mount with Alcohol 120% or some other mounting software.

Although keeping an ISO of Brood War would take some space.

No it should work.
You should make sure you have the View extensions option ticked before moving/renaming so that you don't double up the extension ending.

You should also make sure you're using the Brood War disc and installing on a complete, unmodified install of Brood War. It maybe worthwhile to uninstall, reinstall, update to BW, get the latest Bnet Patch and then go from there.

It's worked on every computer I've tried it with.

Argghh! Forget it. I'll just use the CD.

Did you uncheck the "hide extensions for known file types" BEFORE or AFTER you renamed it? o_O

If you unchecked the "hide extensions for known file types" AFTER you renamed the install.exe then there's your problem.
