Continuing in my line of threads asking what the members of this forum want, possibly in an anticipation for something, possibly because I'm curious (up for grabs at the moment), possibly for another reason, what do you, the players, want in this hypothetical role play?

http://www.warboards.org/showthread.php?t=34731

Going off of this thread, we can assume that the setting would be in a futuristic world with elements of fantasy settings and modern settings. More than that is up to you all. Mind you, I have my own ideas that I've laid down and so do the other people I'm working with. The idea here is to find the most popular ideas for plot and setting or the easiest to work with and go on from there but please keep in mind that this is not a promise. Even if something is popular or easy to work with, if I don't like it, it may not show up in any final product compiled by yours truly.

Have fun.

Well to combine the fantasy with the sci fi you could use magic in the form of psychic ability a la Warhammer.

I'd like to see two sides to the conflict with various small factions making up the larger factions (this is PvR scale RP right?)

How about a more close quarters setting i.e. giant building, space station, alien's bowel etc.

Something not in a close quarters setting. Those are great for some things, terrible for others and I'd rather not be limited to just one setting if this is going to be big.

Crossing fantasy with science fiction is problematic. Fantasy has an inherent advantage over anything scientifically feasible. IE, HAHA IMMA MAGE I OPEN A PORTAL TO THE ABYSS AND THROW ALL YOU MECHS INTO IT.

Not really a whole lot said mechs can do to counter it.

The factions part doesn't bother.

Gears, plz.

I would personally like to see some element of PvP. Whether it's just different groups of players competing against each other for the same goal or different groups actually fighting against each other, I like pitting my skills against another person.

As for combining fantasy and sci-fi, as long as you're careful with the balancing it's fine. Warhammer has psychics and Star Wars has the Force, both of them seem to work just fine. The problems only show up when magic (in whatever its form) becomes too powerful or too common.

In terms of a futuristic RPG, you could have several levels of detail, but as it's best to keep this kind of thing simple, I'd advise that for a solar-system scale RPG, you have one forum for each planet, for a galactic-scale RPG, you have one forum for each solar system, and for a universe-scale RPG, you have one forum for each galaxy. Subforums of these will just become needlessly complicated; different threads can be posted for specific places, and users can define their own for this sort of thing.

A few things:

- Fragmented areas
If too many areas are fragmented, then players will never meet each other, and when they do continuity will be rather a difficult thing to deal with. Better to keep reasonably large areas.

- Factions
It might be nice to include faction-specific information in one forum (not small communications between players of the same faction, but general things like "Army memo #1.452: Do not try to eat the Kerellians, even if they do look like frogs." that would target everyone in an army, that way it's easier to organize where one should look for this sort of thing. General distress calls, etc. can also be put here. (this would also create an easy way for players to organize without unseemly 'coincidences' of 'happening' upon the same area randomly.)

- Timestamps
There are several ways to deal with this; the basic idea is that as people in different areas do things (or even in separate posts), their rate of time may be substantially different than other peoples' rate of time. The easiest way to deal with this is to have stretchy time, i.e. time is whatever happens to be convenient for all involved at the moment, but occasionally this screws with people's plans.

The easiest way to deal with this is to tell those people to make their plans clear from the outset, so that others can best accommodate them, and to reprimand (or just remind) those people who consistently annoy others by breaking this rule.

-PVP
There is a temptation, when playing in this sort of RPG, to make a separate thread for every player-versus-player encounter. I personally find this to be somewhat alienating and annoying for others in the area, who have to switch back and forth to figure out what's going on. Better to keep this sort of thing from becoming isolated.

Become as specific as you want to regarding anything relevant, all the ideas presented so far are ones that have already been thought of between my group and I.

Yeah, this thread totally bombed. You know how depressing it is to my spirits to see the very community I'm attempting to cater to not seem to care? Am I wasting my time by participating in the construction of this RP?

I took the initiative in proposing this to all of you in hopes that all of you would contribute to make a playing experience that would satisfy all of us and be uniquely ours. You know what this lack of attention is telling me? You all don't care. If this is true, tell me now so I can just pass my notes on to whoever wants to pick up the project, because I'll stop wasting my energy.

Seriously people. Check the roleplayers social group for updates and when I ask for your opinions, I expect answers, not inactivity.

I'm not quite sure what you want from us. We have hardly any information besides a map that was posted in the Roleplayers social group. How are we supposed to contribute relevant ideas when we don't know what's going on. You said it yourself, all of the ideas presented here had been thought of by your group already. The fact that you already have a group of people who are privy to information that the rest of us aren't can only lead to inactivity from the rest of us. I was planning on submitting some ideas about how the galaxy should be setup, but then come to find out that apparently it is only based on one planet.

I am personally very excited about this RP, and I'm working on some ideas based on what little you have shared with the rest of us. But I don't think you can expect mass contribution from the community when the information given to the community is so limited. The lack of activity in this thread doesn't necessarily equate to lack of interest.

If you wanted more information, all you had to do was ask. It's not like this is all some big secret but without some show of interest there's no point in posting what we've done.
