Hi,
I recently reïnstalled Starcraft, because i thought it was cool to play again after a long time. I installed and patched it without a problem, but when i run Starcraft, it freaks out. The colors go all wild and weird, which makes it unable to play the game properly. I asume this is because of vista, do you guys know a solution?
I've tried all compatibility mode options already.
My system specs (don't know if you need it, but ok):
2 monitors,
Q6600
4gb ram
8800gts512
Vista Home Premium
I heard someone say its because of the nVidia drivers and someone else that it's because of running 2 monitors.
I have a original storebought cd, so that's not the problem either.
Could you please help me? I'd really like to play starcraft again :D
Greetings,
Delysian

It's because of Vista. Starcraft is a decade old, Vista is a new OS. Do the math.
Go to your original StarCraft.exe, usually in C:\Program Files\Starcraft (not a shortcut or copy), right click and select [Properties].
Select the [Compatibility] tab.
Under "Compatibility," select "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)" from the dropdown box
Under "Settings," check all the boxes.
Select [Ok].
Run Starcraft, it should work normally. If the weird colors happen again, try Alt-Tabbing out, then back in.
I've also heard that Starcraft acts funny on dual monitors, so try disabling one of the monitors while you play.
Or you can use DxWind (http://www.valhallalegends.com/skywing/files/DxWnd/DxWnd.zip) to solve the dual monitor issue. It forces Starcraft to run in a window. It'll be smaller though.

Ah thanks deadkat, so far the alt-tabbing out worked, still my other moniter goes nuts, but i guess thats because of vista running with other colors then.
Thanks a lot!

"downgrade" to XP (It's an improvement I find it hard to use the word downgrade)

I find that running in compatibility mode creates more errors than it fixes (as I have had nothing but problems with it; way longer load times, crashing due to resolution problems (not on my vista comp I have now), and freezing). I just alt-tab, and it's all good. It only happens to me every once-in-a-blue-moon, though. If it happens to you every time, I can see it being quite the nuisance.

Do you have Vista? Have you ever used it long enough to get comfortable with its features? If you answered no to either of these, then [INSERT WITTY HEAD-OUT-OF-ASS INSULT HERE].
I can actually remember when XP came out and everybody (not a very large exaggeration) was all "I hates XP, my brain is just too tiny to comprehend it's full potential! I think all people withes XP is just overcompensating for tiny genitalia. I'm just going to stick with my Windows 98 Second Edition, because it's way better... because it's simpler!" (I can admit having this line of thinking at one point in my life, when 98 was all I had)
And of course there are going to be bugs when something (like an operating system) first comes out, but Vista has been for a while now... and I gotta admit, I can't recall EVER seeing a single 'error' (other than a blue screen once, but that was my own fault).

Hmmm...for me, Starcraft isn't playable without compatibility mode. Inconsistency? What Vista are you using?

Funny...I said the exact thing eighteen days ago.
Though I do have to say, Service Pack 1 wasn't worth losing my unsigned themes. I miss them.

Well yes my laptop came preinstalled with vista and found it just be sluggish when loading things and had a hard time running some games on the high video settings after about 4 months of trying to put up with it i just decided lifes easier to run XP and keep my vista disk if Microsoft ever cleans its act up

Ya know, all you people saying that Vista is sluggish and shit...really annoying me.
There's an option in Vista, to shut of DWM, shut off Aero, shut off all of it.
And end up with XP system reqirements.

Then I don't understand why bother paying for a new operating system just to turn all that shit off
P.S sluggish

You didn't pay for it, now did you?
You got a new laptop, it came preinstalled.
This will be how many transition to Vista. Buy a new computer, comes preinstalled. Microsoft presses Vista on to you.
And if you shut Aero, DWM off, you still get:
Improved Windows Firewall
Integration with Windows Defender
Support from Microsoft that isn't gonna end soon
UAC
Improved Windows Explorer
.xps Viewer
ReadyBoost
BitLocker
I'd have to admit though, boot time does feel slower.
But I never shut down my laptop (hibernate) so that really doesn't matter much for me
Vista eats up tons of RAM, so if you bought a piece-of-shit laptop, then it would run Vista slowly.
But for those of us with lotsa RAM, it's way faster than XP could ever be.

I got 2gb of ram which is pretty much standard for laptops and all those features for vista I had pretty much all that firewall stuff disabled and ran the software my school makes us run so that crap doesn't matter to me. and if vista uses more RAM then xp then why would having more RAM mean vista becomes faster then xp that i don't really understand

I'm not saying my computer can't run Vista fine it just doesn't run the way I expected it to such as load things faster then xp and i find xp handles multiple programs at once much much better like when i wanna play video games while listening to music, surfing the interwebs, writing code for comp sci class, torrenting, and dc++ing

Lemme just put it this way... I payed $1300 for mine.
Right-click the StarCraft short-cut.
Open Properties.
In the Target area add -w to make it look like this: "C:\Program Files\Starcraft\StarCraft.exe" -w
Oddly enough it gets rid of all the weird colours.
Or you could go to your display settings and change the colours from 32-bit to 16-bit.
