View Full Version : Problem Playing SC/BW in Windows XP
Hi all.
I've just installed SC and BW on my PC (running XP Pro SP2), and when I first create my profile everything seems ok.
I've played through the first Terran mission, then when I click ok on the Outcome screen, I hear the Windows Exclamation sound and everything freezes. I end up having to Ctrl-Alt-Delete and killing the program to get back to Windows.
Then when I re-enter the game, I get to the Episode selection screen and choose Terran to carry on my game, I hear the sound again, and everything locks up again. :(
From what I can tell in the error file, theres an access violation message or something of the sort about storm.dll.
I've been looking around the boards and people seem to be suggesting updating to the latest version, uninstalling Virus Scanners, that sort of thing. I've tried everything that I've seen suggested, and nothing seems to work.
Is there anyone here that's had this problem and overcome it, so that I might be able to get back into playing myself?
Any help is appreciated,
Jase.

No no, it isn't a virus.
Is it just the Terrans?
My suggestion is that you reinstall, if it still doesn't work than right click on the StarCraft program icon, than go to properties, next to the compatibility tab, and next click on "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" And then check the box, make sure the drop box says Windows 95 than click ok.
Then try it.
Tried that, same problem. :(
I can seem to go into Skirmish fine and play a game in that, but when I try Campaign, I get the lockup, and the error file going on about storm.dll :(

Hmm...
Replace your storm.dll with this one. Just make sure when you paste it in the folder starcraft is located in and that you press ok when it asks to you to replace the file. It seems like that file might be corrupt on the disc. If you call Blizzard and tell them about it I'm sure that they'll replace it.... Maybe...
Tried your storm.dll, it still causes a lockup.
Running out of ideas on what to try :(

Well damn, ionno what to say.
Is your copy of starcraft legal?
In windows xp the game should run just fine, without any problems.
If you have a legal copy, you should also install the newest patch.
If that doesn't work either then I dunno.

well i had the same thing with a win98, i had to reinstall the operating sistum. but take that as a last resort.
Yup my copy and my key are legal.
BroodWar seems to run fine in Campaigns, it just seems to be StarCraft that has the issue.
Hmm...Well if you really wanna play Vanilla campaign then sure but honestly if Battle.net works fine that you should be good. Dunno i guess i was never into the campaign =/ but what ever its up to you

geez this is like if someone would want to play counterstrike single player when he can go to play it over internet. Or if someone would want to play single player chess ^_~ Hmm someone actually should program single campaigns for chess... it would be like: in first mission you have only king and 2 pawns and you must kill opponents king. Then by the mission 15 you would also be able to use bishops!
btw blizzard also has this very good support forum, they know better there I think.
Jase, being a person that is going on his 3rd SC-BW buy I must say that it awfully seems more a CD hardware case (scratched most likely) than anything else. Just water the data surface with cold water and in the mid time apply soap to the tip of your fingers making a somewhat thick paste (with the soap and water). Then apply that same paste to the data side and gently wash that surface with it. Afterwards just wash it down and dry the CD surfaces with a gentle cloth. I must emphasize on the gentle movements and on the soft texture of cleaning cloth. If the scratch isn't too deep the CD most likely will just work fine afterwards. ;)
Oh and welcome on board btw. :)
lammy, some of us find pleasure in playing through the campaigns because of the excellent plot. IMO its easy, not as fun playing, but the plot is excellent. First thing im gonna do when (if) I get sc2, is that im gonna play through the campaigns. It takes me three days or so at most, and it makes me familiar with the units quite well, able to try out some combos etc.

Basan's right, this sounds more like a corrupted map or some such issue. (which, if your cd was scratched, would cause that to happen since the campaign maps are stored on the cd.) I would suggest starting the first mission again (assuming you can) and then using the ophelia cheat to bypass and start mission 3. If that works without problems then it's your mission 2 map that's messed up. (which, if that's the case, I'm sure someone around here wouldn't mind posting up a copy so you can play it manually)
ophelia cheat:
To choose your level do the following:
1. Press ENTER
2. Type "ophelia"
3. Press ENTER
4. Type the name of the desired level.
5. Press ENTER again.
StarCraft level names consist of the race followed by the mission number. eg: terran1, terran2, zerg1, zerg2, protoss1, protoss2, etc.
