So, who's gonna get it? I'm really excited for this, considering the fact that I lost melee (favorite game eva...except for LoZ). If you guys get it, share your friend codes, but if you play with me, I might suck >.<.
7 days guys

I will get it. SSBM is one of my favorite games too. I don't like everything about brawl, but I still think it's pretty much guaranteed to be great.

DoctorZettabyte

Yes, the ninth.

I am proud to say that I will also be getting my hands on Super Smash Bros. 3 as soon as time permits. I'd really like to see what the devs have done with six times the amount of space than on a GameCube disc. It will be interesting, to say the least. Super Smash Bros. 1 was only 12 megs!

To be quite honest, how much talking could there be? It's a party game. Grunting and death sounds notwithstanding, I sincerely doubt the script for this game is all that big.

Or someone who has only posted once got it ahead of you?
Or someone who's registered, but never posted at all?

I personally am hoping to get it within an hour or two. DST means I get it an hour earlier!

...I'm back. After playing for two straight hours. It's pretty fun, but I really need an anti-glare TV. I got the 30,000 steps trophy (Tails), and unlocked Ness and Marth.

I'm really impressed with the whole package -- there's a lot to do and unlock. Some of the stuff is kind of annoying, and the smash ball needs to be easier to break, but on the whole, it's quite a keeper. Some of the game is a little too chaotic -- a far cry from earlier parts of the series, and I really need to get an anti-glare TV.

I'll do a review after I try most everything out. I'm looking to do a Wi-Fi with a few other people whom I know have it, and the Level Creator looks pretty cool.

Also, one last thought: They should have started you out with only eight characters and made you work up from there.

Does anyone have Falco or Captain Falcon yet? Luigi was pretty tough to beat for some reason, and I'd like to gauge how well I'll be able to beat the remaining 9 or so characters.

Is JigglyPuff in this one? A 3-on-1 with DK at parties and 200% was always fun.

Also, Mario would win that Mario-Sonic battle everyone's talking about. I tested it.

One last thing: Try the coin launcher in "the vault" I got 7 trophies in less than 10 minutes.

I've been using the Wii controller sideways, like the NES controller. Without reading the instruction manual or anything, it actually took me a while to figure out how to shield and roll and stuff, haha I'm such a newb.

Well anyways, I'll try and get my wireless network going here, I need to rehook up my router. Then I'll share my friend code so I can whoop you guys.

Nunchuk and WiiMote is a lot easier, at least for me. I was a little annoyed at the whole grip thing for the WiiMote, but hey, whatever floats your boat.

All right, I got Falco. Took me a few tries, but if you use Samus and get really close to him, he'll get kinda skittish and not attack much.
I'd love to get C.Falcon and Solid Snake, but meh...Not enough time.

I was surprised how easy it was to find a copy of this game. The final smash attacks are a bit overpowered, but many of the other new items are rather cool. Not to say that the final smash attacks don't look cool; it's just a bit much when you can KO someone who has 0% damage.

So far, I've unlocked:

Luigi
Captain Falcon
Marth
Ness
Ganondorf

I can get anyone to 999% in the original's Training Mode -- back them against the tailfin of the ship in Sector Z, and pull out four fire-flowers. They'll go flying.

I was really talking about damage multipliers, now replaced with 0.5-2.0 in Brawl. Strange things start happening when you play 200% and mini-characters.

This game is incredibly high octane and high quality. The Subspace Emissary (single player campaign / story mode) is VERY long; I've got nearly 9 hours of playtime under my belt and I've only beaten it (still not 100% complete!). There are tons of modes and things to do outside of the SSE, alone or with friends. A staggering 32 player tournament can be supported for large parties, or 16 players switching off for your close friends. Online play also supports a large variety of modes; again, with friends or vs. anyone.

And, I haven't even begun to scratch the surface of unlockables. And, you can make your own levels!

Balls up, this game is fucking hardcore :)

Vhaeraun
03-10-2008, 6:56 PM
Not only that, but you can put so much time in SSE and not even notice time passing; I played nearly 2 hours today and didn't even notice that 2 hours had passed - aside from the fact the time kept going up when I saved it, but I didn't pay attention to that much.

-DocTeraYeah, it Is. . Also Here's the best way to get all the characters in an hour or 2...or three...

OKAY: Start out with special brawl, Stamina, Fast speed. Now Choose stamina to be 1% on whatever enemy. while you be fox. Now Play on the Level dedicated to Metal gear. You will fight Snake after 15 battles(fox's blaster does 1% damage, and since your enemy is on 1%...yeah...) and then Fight on poke' stadium 2 for poke stadium 1. keep doing that for 700 battles. You'll unlock every character. I don't know about Levels yet though.

Anyone else think brawl goes way to damn fast?

in ssb, for example, i mean, you'd have time to roll around and stuff.

in brawl with 4 players it's like, hope your smash succeeds and slams the other person.

pit also negates damn near every final smash, a friend was cheezing it up with him and would just flap up to the top whenever anyone would get a final smash that wasn't a "rape everything on screen" type.

The speed seems so fast, and it results in matches that go so fast it's difficult to keep track. Also some of the stages seem off -- that pikmin one for instance was beyond annoying.

And can anyone explain to me peoples reluctance in simply selecting a damn stage? "LETS RANDOM EVERY TIME" -- we ended up on one of those retarded up-scrolling stages, tell me, who's brilliant fucking idea was that? you spend so much less time fighting then you do just jumping.

-Neo

DoctorZettabyte
03-11-2008, 6:46 PM
I thought the same thing about Melee, Neo, but you get accustomed to it after a few matches in Brawl. My only gripe is that it's not bright enough and everything is a little too small.

Stick with the Original Twelve characters and everything's balanced okay...usually.

Picking a stage, however, usually ends up with me picking the same four or five maps, although I do like the amount of selection Brawl affords. I haven't tried the stage builder yet though.

Random is fun for awhile when you don't know the stages, but getting thrown on one of those retarded scrollers is annoying; you're right: all you do is avoid screen death. I wish you could "turn off" stages for random. Because I honestly love randomizing stages (always do it for Mario Kart) but I have to avoid the 'tard stages, so.

About the speed: you're an old man.

Neo
03-11-2008, 6:53 PM
Yeah that bothered me to, things weren't bright enough or just seemed tiny (items for instance, what the hell?)

SSBM isn't as bad though -- you've got time to pull off moves, but in Brawl some levels are just so small that you don't even have to move to hit another player.

Also the final smash thing is so annoying, since I wasnt able to figure out how to actually break it -- can you break it with a ranged shot? and can you always smash it out of someone else?

my main gripe though besides the speed is related to items, they are so tiny or blurry that you don't wtf you've picked up, and then you get those trophy asist things, and randomly get crappy things, (same with pokeballs) or you get some gigantic-tron-like-face that pukes all over the stage killing everyone.

old man my ass.

what the hell is the point of using directed attacks? ie: pk thunder. Ness' is fast, of course, but lucas' which goes through others and potentially more annoying is pointless, since you end up leaving yourself vulnerable. And/or it's so difficult to smash yourself into others with the speed so high.

Visibility seemed poor to, it was really easy to set up a bat smash or whatever, since no one can even tell you're holding it ><

I do love that you can use GC Controllers to play though.

-Neo

You can't gripe about items. Turn 'em off if you don't like them.

And, maybe they are small, but I'm not blind so I'm always able to see what they are. Protip: get a larger TV, or sit closer.

Final Smashes are interesting... still undecided if I like having them in Brawls with people...

Yes -- you can even break it with PoKemon and throwing things like a baseball bat, another player, etc,. And the drop is timed -- I think if you have it for 5 seconds, you're all set.

I like spawning with a final smash. Always really fun to not have to fight over it. A sense of panic ensues when one is floating around really fast. People are climbing over each other, in real life too, to get it.

Not really. Just get within breathing distance and be ready to move just a little bit away at any moment. You should be fine.

How do you mean? My experience using both of their finals no one could dodge them at all -- mostly because of the random first couple of strikes, and then just the massive hit everything strike at the end.

Whereas, like, the trainer's smash, you just jump away/behind the pokemon, heh.

And I could've sworn that samus had like 3 total different suits? or something to that affect. heh, maybe the video i watched was just old.

I've avoided Samus' final smash before; but I have also been sucked into it from just behind her, as well. As for other characters with close range final smashes, like Ike, Marth, MetaKnight, and Link, you should be able to dodge with a well timed roll. And for Lucas and Ness...sometimes you can dodge, sometimes you can't.

I'm at around 70% on Subspace Emissary, having explored the upper right corner of the great maze. I believe I have almost all the characters (except Jigglypuff, the one that I want), through either playing multiplayer or finding them in adventure mode.

On event matches, I've done the first 7 or so on Hard and then through 20 on Easy. Now that I've unlocked through 30, I'll probably go back and work on finishing them on hard.

I agree with Neo on the issue of things being too small. I can hardly ever tell if I'm picking up one of those strange little powerups that sticks to you or a remote bomb. Speaking of remote bombs, Snake's little remote triggered mine is pretty devious, although I have trouble using him in regular fights because his smash attacks have very long windup. If I could contain myself to regular attacks, he's quite strong.

On the issue of stage selection, I know that in Melee I disabled the flat zone level from being selected in random; such an annoying level. Anyway, I imagine that the same feature is inside Brawl somewhere. It would be such a shame for them to take something like that out. If I had not already shut down for the night, and was not soon going to bed, then I would see if I could find the option.

Masterpieces are just demos for games that have been or will be released in the Wii Virtual Console, culminating with Super Smash Bros.
They're all timed demos, which suck, and some of them are as short as forty seconds.

Gimmicky. The only part of the game outside of gameplay gripes that I really don't like.

You're playing too much, taking too many screenshots, and creating too many levels. You're running out of HD space, or your disc laser's messing up.

Worst case scenario: Wii's breaking, hopefully still under warranty.
Best-Case Scenario: Clean up your hard drive!

It also may be the disc, getting scratched up by laser-reads, or it's just dirty.

Load times are longer than in Melee, in my experience. On the pausing issue, I don't know. My Wii crashes from time to time, like when my friends beat me at Wii Boxing. It doesn't take kindly to others gloating over my defeat.

I've completed Subspace Emissary on Easy with 85% completion, beat Classic on Very Hard without a continue (and on first try, too), then unlocked Toon Link and Jigglypuff.

It also may be the disc, getting scratched up by laser-reads

Wind Waker was an awesome game. A bit too easy to finish, but still great, imo.

I got Toon Link when I beat Classic on Very Hard without a continue. I can't tell you if it was related to the no continue, or if it was because I beat Subspace Emissary, or if it was because I played on Very Hard.

Subspace Emissary isn't so much hard as it is boring and repetitive. The only reason you'll keep playing is to see the neat cinematics and the "need" to beat it. I'm in "The maze", the end of it, and I just can't get myself to go and finish it. Maybe this weekend. Ugh.

Started playing classic challenges, doing everything on normal so far. Beaten classic with 3 guys. As for the Events thing, I've done 7 of them on normal. I'll probably start off everything on normal and then move on to hard later once I get decent..

The home run thing, I've hit the bag 1300 some odd yards as my farthest. Anyone get farther?

Still haven't looked at the instruction manual, so I still haven't seen/executed a Final Smash. Nor do I even know how.. haha.

The problem with Ike (and similar characters, such as King Dedede), is that you have to completely change the timing of your attacks, since they attack so slowly. I'm much more of a fast-attack person, with characters like Marth, MetaKnight, Fox and Pit. In short, anyone who is relatively fast with strong air attacks.

Ok, Sonic's final smash is beyond queer.

Been having trouble with snake's, but it's not to hard to just dodge, but omfg.

Sonic's is just queer. First off, I'm not sure if it's the wiimote (thats what he uses when he plays as sonic) but it's like he's got full control over sonic, unlike pikachu's final. Secondly, it's as if the final smash just leaps into sonics hands.

I usually play to keep others away from the smash, or I only go after it once it's been hit a few times, but sonic, literally, jumps into it once and gets it right away.

You can't even roll, can't hang on ledges, hell you can't even jump. The only way I've found to sucessfully avoid it, or at least minimize the affect, is to be on a stage where you get slammed between the ground and roof (ie: places with two levels).

It's also annoying how close the boundaries seem to be, if you get thrown up at even >100% you end up being KO'd even though you can jump around up top out of the camera's view on your own. Might be because I play a light character, but it's so annoying.

But pfft.

I play as ness or lucas, lucas seems easier, but ness has also been a main for me, he's just fun. Ness's PK Fire almost always sets the other person up for a bat swing, something lucas's doesn't.

Can't decide if I actually like final smashes, yeah they are cool, but on the other hand most fall into either the useless category, easily dodged category, or OMFG RAPE category.

I've also got a friend who plays nothing but Snake just because he's Snake. Mostly snake is worthless, imo, but he NEVER dies.you literally have to get him to 130+ and smash his butt off the stage.

Side Note: Pikachu is SICK.

I've only got five characters left to get -- Ganon, Jigglypuff, Star Wolf, Game & Watch, and Toon Link. I'm not going out of my way for anyone besides G&W and Ganon.
...Subspace Emissary seems somewhat uninspired -- Boring enemies, predictable plot, too easy in many places, rediculous button-mashing in others. Cheap way to get trophies and characters, too.

I like just kicking the crap out of people -- not platforming. The brawls themselves are pretty interesting and tough, and switching up control schemes is fun to do every few matches, to see what you like. WaveBirds and GC controllers are cheap though.

VConsole controllers and "Masterpieces" are trash though. Waste of disc space that could have been another few arenas and characters.

Love the soundtracks option though -- I'm around 1/2 to 2/3 done.

It took me a few hours to figure out, but I'm able to do regular open Brawl against anyone now (not just vs. friends). There's not as much lag as when I initially started -- it's all about how you set up your Wii's internet connection.

Basically, when you set up your Wii's connection, do it manually instead of having it find the port. Go to Run->CMD and type ipconfig/all and it'll tell you your IP and all that. Use that to set up your connection (use the IP addresses and the DNS addresses), it will work much better.

Also, under MTI (sp? on the Wii) or something like that, set it to 1500. Don't know why, but it helps.

I've been doing pretty good with Wario and Diddy Kong online.

Some of the replays I've seen online of Ike fail to impress me. I've seen a guy win with Ike, but all of his success was based on the other players being too inept to break the smash ball. Really? Huh.

A friend only plays snake, and aside from being really good with timing, I don't see the appeal. Though he only plays snake for the sole reason that he's snake.

Anywho, Ike i don't get at all, I've tried him a few times, but really he seems incredibly useless, and his Final isn't all that impressive (visually it is, no doubt). By useless, I just mean slow.

Lucas <3

I actually wish to change characters a bit, I thought pikachu was pretty sick, mostly because moving from classic to brawl = all of his moves are faster (thunder annoyed my friends heh). But again, he's a light character. I actually want to try a medium one, perhaps.

His arrow attack ends almost everything in Sudden Death at a full charge -- getting there is the problem.

The boomerang can pull other players and items to you, but not the Final Smash.

Using the spin attack on the ground after a small charge (hold down ^B for a second or two) is devastating to start, but weakens very quickly.

Practice with every inch of his Final Smash's range -- keep 'em close, but not too close for best results.

Bombs are useless, except for setting off explosive crates.

Link really shines in open, flat maps with few platforms. The Bridge of Eldin, Final Destination, Lylat Cruise, Aero Drive, etc,.

Good Luck!

People run around and do B+UP and B+OVER with Ike. It's annoying. It's really hard to get in and do close combat with Ike cause of the range of his sword.. if you roll in and get get behind, good, but it's hard to come in on top of him or from the front.

As for charging arrow with Link to win in sudden death.. wha? Just do roll+dodge around and try and do a smash attack, that wins instantly. Can you even charge, then move around when charged like Samus can and fire later? Bombs are decent, throwing them around when people are low health can get some kills, as well as throwing them down when coming in from above someone can work. I think Link works well in maps with several levels, since his A+UP and A+DOWN are fairly powerful and can knock you off pretty quick. His recovery time is just soooo slow..

I'm still playing Wario and Diddy Kong quite a bit online, but I've also added Olimar to the mix. Diddy's roll attack (A+OVER) is really strong and quick, plus the range of his smash attack is nice. For Wario I really like his B+UP attack for dishing out damage, and his ultimate is awesome (Super Wario!). Olimar is really different both of those guys, he's got damage moves like A+UP, but he's really quick at rolling/dodging which I like.

You guys should play online ;p Post friend codes when you do.. and if you have problems setting up your connection to just do open brawling vs. pubbies, let me know maybe I can help. I've been doing it almost all week with little to no lag, so, yeah. That tutorial I posted earlier in the thread made it so I could play online.

masterofhobbiton

Ike wins instantly in sudden death with a slightly charged side B. Also, you can get very satisfying victories with him without needing to use skill; his attacks are really really powerful. It's great to smack around light characters with him and utterly overpower him. However, his strategy doesn't work at all against a good dodger or a fast character, his slow moves except for his fast back and down aerials leave him too open.

I want to use toon link but haven't unlocked him. Now I favor Lucario, Zero-Suit Samus, and Falco.

Zerg_eater

Toon link Is good, His Down A is actually Really strong and Extremely risky to use when your gonna smash someone down, but when you do you feel the need to scream ULTIMATE PAWN!
Cause once you press Down A, instead of just keeping his sword down, He charges down instead of just staying in the air....u'll know what I mean after you get him. Otherwise, Toon Link and Link owns after you learn how to use em

Okay, finished event 37 -- Song of Storms is a bit of a letdown, but still pretty good with the serenade of water/rutela's theme at the end of it.

Jiggilypuff is pretty hard-core now -- she poses a serious threat if you're not careful.

Jigglypuff has slightly stronger regular attacks in Brawl, but the Down+B move ("Rest") is way underpowered compared to Melee. And if you have no idea what I'm talking about, you obviously haven't played against someone who knows how to make you fear Jigglypuff. =p

Tiers as in, who's the best characters, who's the middle/OK characters, and who's the worst characters. Who's overpowered? Who's crap?

Instant kill with a scream, right? I've never owned Melee, so I wouldn't know, but it hasn't changed much.

I never fear Jiggilypuff...anyone I play can't use him/her/it effectively.

In my experience some mediocre characters end up "OP" during their finals (Sonic for instance, snake as well, since the final is difficult to dodge if they other person is good) etc...

On the other hand, I think tiers should be split -- w/finals and w/out

For instance, link isn't that bad, but his final is pretty strange.

Link's tough to use in an online situation (I usually defer to Master Chief [green Samus]), but if you play against someone or you're playing on huge, flat maps, Link is a great character to use, especially on the Bridge of Eldin. It seems designed for him -- go figure. :P

I just meant when you compare, say, links final to someone's like snakes, or sonics, or any of the others that can hit multiple characters pretty easily, it kind of pales.

Ness is definitely in the middle list -- and in the upper list if you can play him well. He has a completely different play style from anyone in Melee / Brawl -- including lucas. But if you know how to use that play style correctly he is ridick.

Neo
04-05-2008, 9:38 PM
Yeah, I was just wondering -- ness has been my main since classic really, and while I haven't had much practice with him in brawl (I decided to give lucas a shot, liked him and wanted to perfect it a bit) i didn't think he was THAT bad.

Although Ness' final (i know the list doesn't include them) is pretty easy to dodge, though when it lands a hit it does more damage then lucas'

Link can hit multiple people with his Final Smash, as can everyone else in the game, its just that link, marth, Ike (my charecter) and most of anyone who has a single hit Smash can still eliminate the other charecters by the selected one...

Lol, I just think this is funny. The first time I played brawl was at a friends house, and we were going to play online with one of our other friends. So me, him, and his sister pick our characters and are on the waiting stage. I forget how, but we were talking about how awesome the waiting stage, and then I said "I know, I mean, it's like Chuck Norris awesome" Just when I finished saying that, it says Chuck would like to join the game. I was wondering who chuck was for a second, because my friends online name was like Vandor or something wierd like that. Oh, and I think that Ike is good for power killing, say, in the melee event things (cruel brawl, 100 man brawl, those things), and for everything else, there's Lucario.

Vezer
04-17-2008, 10:16 PM
Lucario's counter is great.

And the reason I put Ness on the very bottem is because I am horrible with him. I do better with Peach, belive it or not.

Everyone I have run into that plays brawl always goes "i play so-and-so, oh and I am awesome with lucas!"

I find that lucas is much too slow of a finesse character to be serious in 1v1's. Ness's superior speed will win out the day -- despite the fact that he has trouble with finishing off opponents (his grab has been severely nerfed -- and his bat is still slow, but at least faster).

Neo
04-19-2008, 11:50 PM
Yeah. In SSB and later Melee, I was usually a Ness player, I just liked him for some reason. The different jump, plus he's small.

Though in SSB he was freaking slow (and that's saying something rofl).

Anyway, I've not had a chance to actually delve to much into playing Ness, since I found myself screwing up severely whenever I switched between the two to often.

I've actually been wanting to use Pikachu, Ness, and possibly Toon Link more. But seeing as much of the time I play Brawl it's on a time constraint, it's not always possible.

People will always mistake Ness for being a crap character because he requires such a unique play style. Having said that, Lucas is arguably more typical, and people always love having that one fantastic finishing move (smash up A).

Just a random thought, if I ever see pikachu in a multiplayer match I target him immediately. I find that pikachu is the most effective multiplayer character that doesn't try to float away and stall. His smash down A is one of the fastest smashes in the game and then the combo with that and thunder is ridiculous. Pikachu has gotten even faster in brawl now, and I find him one of the more formidable opponents 1v1 as well. But I needed to vent my general annoyance with the multiplayer pikachu.

Was anyone else disappointed with the ease of the Event matches even on hard mode?

I found myself blitzing through them and the more challenging ones were with characters I wasn't used to playing. Even still I finished those in 5 tries or so. Is it just me, or did they get easier?

DoctorZettabyte

Try the one when you're Ganon and you're against Pit and Link. Really tough. Ganon needs more finesse and needs to focus one character in one area of the map at a time. Very tough event match.

And I tried using pikachu in a brawl match with my friends, sumo88's right. He's kick ass in that area.

Really? I found it really easy, but then again, I'm pretty decent with Ganon. He was my #2 charecter on Melee.

I find it way too easy to kill Lucas, but then again I usually play with Shiek, who is really really fast. Although, everyonce and a while, I'll screw up (or try to sidestep) and get hit by an up-A, and die at 20%-or-so. They defeintly need to nerf Lucas.

Speaking of Sheik, does everyone still overlook Zelda? One of my friends is solid with Zelda and her Din's Fire just got way hotter...pun intended. It now has a ridiculous radius and hits considerably harder and faster.

Any of the Sheik players out there use the switch to Zelda to pose a different threat to opponents or are the two characters more exclusive? While switching combat styles can break a rhythm it also takes makes your opponent adjust to a different style of play.

Comments/thoughts?

Which character should have never have been included in Brawl?
I vote for Olimar.

Sometimes I play with Zelda, but I find that if you're playing against a fast charecter, it's near impossible to hit them with din's fire. Ganondorf, on the other hand...
