After chatting to Neo we thought it might be an idea to use the resources of the warboards wiki to create a starcraft specific technical support database.
I would like to ask everyone that has needed to forward there modem/router to post there modem/router make and model and the basic rundown of how that model handles port forwarding. (As long as it worked obviously. :P )
Step by step instructions would be best, think about it as if you are trying to explain it to your Grandmother. You never know, it could be someones Grandmother or Grandfather that one day tries to make sense of the instructions.
I will add instructions people post to what have found online over the years plus any new stuff I can find now that I am putting this together.
Step by step instructions for any third party software people have used to "fix" there starcraft connection would also be appreciated.

A step by step guide to set up port forwarding for your make and model of router would be much more helpful.
Although I am just as guilty of directing people to portforward.com and expecting them to work it out on there own as you obviously are. At the end of the day it doesn't really help.
Not only that but 9 times out of 10, people are only asking for tech help because they have already read the information at portforward.com, cant make heads or tails of it or cant find a step by step for there make and model.
However it is an excellent resource.

Well you are right and I think the main reason why portforward causes trouble is cause they get you to use your static ip.
I was just like you said,''using it as a excellent resource.''
Really though the ip they should use they you get by going to start>run>typecmd>in the black screen type>ip config>then get the ip.

For many makes and models that works fine, but you should be aware that not all makes and models work the same way, some makes require a server definition to be put in place, for example.
Also on my setup the IP given by your suggestion is 192.168.0.3 witch is my static local area IP. The same IP is listed in the Modem/router as well. I have a netgear 4 port modem/router. Its all in one. I'm pretty sure there is no way to ascertain the IP of my PC and get a different address.
To be fair, portforward has a massive database of different routers, and step by step directions on setting up port forwards and such.
The problem is that a netgear router might do it differently then a linksys.
Another problem is also related to people not wishing to take the time to read, or learn about how to do this, even though on most routers it's about a 5 minute job, tops.
Ideally someone who games should also have their router setup to always give their computer the same ip address (for example, I always have 192.168.2.2) rather then leaving it random.
But that opens up a whole nother can of worms. It can't hurt, though, to explain what all this means, and how it applies to starcraft, and eventually Diablo II and Warcraft III (not to mention WoW). Or for that matter, really, any other games.

After thinking about it a bit, all we really need to do is add some instructions on how to use portforward.com
Almost all research for any make or model I look for seems to lead me back there anyway.
The fact that so many requests are made for help with port forwarding simply shows that many people don't understand the guides and how they are formatted.
Although to the technically savvy that might be quite hard to believe, its obviously true.
So, I guess the goal is to create a guide to help a novice use portforward.com.

Good Idea and really port forward.com kinda explains itself to a point. Also like you said some routers like special netgears are harder to set up.
ot question here, but has anyone ever got that port triggering to work?
or does that even exist on routers anymore?

it works on my router quite will and using the normal linksys wrt54g.
I mean, is it worth it to setup at all?
I've thought about it a few times, but i also figure "if it ain't broke don't fix it" you know?
Heh.

Ok I thought I would make a simple tutorial on the routers that don't need the extra work.I will go further in it later.
Ok, if you have a simple router you bought from walmart lets say a linksys WRT54G,Dlink DI-724.or a Belkin F5D7630 this should help you.
The Getting to the router part isn't all the same but, it will work.
Anyways, I will be doing this for the Linksys WRT54G,Now for part 1.
You need to know our ip right?
If so go to start>Run>Type Cmd>In The New Box Type ipconfig>now get your ip address.
Now I will say here is where it is different so go to portforward.com for the right address to your router.
Anyways for linksys here we go.
Open up Whatever Internet Browser you use may it be FF,IE,Opera,or Safari.
Then in the address bar type 192.168.1.1 a new box will come up asking for user name and password.
Now aslong as noone has redone the user name and password it y default will be-
UserName:
PassWord:admin
yes that means no username.
Now your in the router or got the error message(if the error see if someone changed the password or name)
Now go to apps and games.
The in that for name type b.net,for ip type your ip,ports on the start it will be 6112 and end 6119(yes that means you will have wc3 also working),and protocol both.
Now check the box, save it,and if you are in starcraft rejoin b.net.
Now host if it works good if not make sure you did it right =].
That is all I got right now so remember to go to PortForward.com for more info.(they got alot of the basics that you can use)
