internet goes on and off

so, i've bought a new computer, with vista installed on it. when i plug the internet into it, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt. at first i thought it was something wrong with vista, but when i plugged it into an XP, it would also be off, before randomly turning back on.

I dont have a firewall or anything like that, just a pre-installed anti-virus which i havent activated

so, i thought there must be something wrong with the modem. i've checked the wire, and it seems fine, and i use at&t

this only started happening once i started using vista for some odd reason. coincidence?

Very interesting, considering it's a wired connection. Is there any point in the chain (that you know of) from you to your ISP that is wireless? There may be interference.

If not, make sure your modem is supported by Vista. Other than that, try getting your connection to run in Win XP mode (if that's possible, though I highly doubt it is).

Anything past that means a call to AT&T tech support. Fun fun fun.

Is it just a modem box, or is it also a router?

Has this always happened?

Seems like it might be an internet problem, in that case you've got to complain to your internet service provider (protip: often times using dslreports.com can generate better service then just calling in)
