View Full Version : Lots of Lag In FPS games.

I'm using a Vista desktop with a wireless connection, and I keep getting a lot of Lag in Battlefield 2142 and on Counter strike. I tried to keep the settings low, but it's still like this. Any Ideas?

Wireless is not as good as general Ethernet when it comes to gaming, particularly with newer games. There may be some interference somewhere on your end, or the servers you're on may have high ping issues.
Also, for CS (Source?), make sure your connection settings are all working correctly and your connection speed matches.

It would help if we had a few specs other than "Vista desktop with a wireless connection"

It's an Emac, AMD sempron 2.20 Ghz, Gefore 660 989 mb ram. My pings are usually the lowest, or just in the middle in both games.

on BF2142, when I lag it says:Connection lost for about a half second, which is my lag there.
on CS(CZ and original) everyone freezes for a second or two, then I end up getting headshotted.

your ram is below the min. requirements for both of those games I belive and if you run vista thats a BIG issue.Because Vista alone will take half your ram even to the minimum lol.
My main point is simple get new ram ;).

wireless internet today is more than good enough for online gaming. Do you really think gaming needs more than 2 or 3 mb/s?

maybe if you're still running 802.11a or something.

My main point is simple get new ram ;).....Its almost close to a gig. but, I changed vista to run at fastest performance, but I haven't tried it yet due to school.

Isn't Vista's minimum requirement 1 gig alone? That's a big chunk of RAM itself.

Read the box and the instruction manuals, Z_E. It's a pretty obvious thing to do! If Vista needs 1 gig RAM and you have less than that, I think you need more!

I'm surprised you got Vista off the ground, even on "performance" settings.

that's really gay then. Can I degrade my computer? because vista came with this.

Yeah I wouldn't be caught dead with a computer with less than 3 gigs of RAM now for gaming, especially if it has vista.

A friend of mine just built a computer and he has 8 gigs of RAM.
EIGHT FUCKING GIGS! Rediculous.

wow, 8 gigs. im pretty sure a downgrade to XP costs about $119, give or take ten dollars

Yeah, you can, but I'm not sure if you can simply wipe it and start over or if your hardware was custom-built for Vista (or vice-versa), in which case downgrading your computer may be a slow, painful, and probably expensive process.

For you there is a way use a hard drive wiper.I forget some of their names I think one is called boot run or something.

Anyways google for a hard drive wiper.
Use it then install xp,2000,or whatever.
Really though this is just like when xp came out people were wining about it and people were saying just use 2000.I laugh each time someone complains on vista :p.

My games run fast and smooth, but in bf2142 it says "there is a problem with your connection" then comes back after a half second.

URGH!!!I am really getting tired of this! I just want to play a lagless game for once in 2142! I play smoothley in single player, but online...BLEH!

You've got two problems:

A fetish for capital letters, and not enough RAM to get Vista off the ground unless you get down and dirty and install everything manually.

But I did the thingy where you go for best performance.

You should have installed everything manually, then. In theory, you could run Vista on Windows XP requirements, but you'd be missing a lot of stuff.

Trust me, there is a way to install manually, outside of the two options provided. Poke around next time.

I haven't tried this myself, as I'm happy with my system performance (for now, or at least until I can get myself a PC I can simply poke around with) , but I have seen it done. A friend of mine claims to have gotten a bare-bones-without-calcium XP off the ground (albeit in 20 minutes) with a Pentium 1 and 8 megs of RAM.

Yes. It goes by 4 names now. Dell, E-Bay, custom-built, or Linux.
