View Full Version : Can I delete these empty temp files?

I've been messing around in my computer due to an "NSIS Error: Error Launching Installer" alert whenever I try to install certain programs. That aside, I found thousands of empty Scm####.tmp files in the Temp folder. I recognize Scm as the format used for StarCraft maps; I'm wondering if maybe these have some relation to StarForge (or SCM Draft) creating backup copies of maps every minute or so (but that's an uneducated speculation). Is it safe to delete these 0 byte files or do they hold some significance? Even if it is safe to delete them, would doing so accomplish anything? The creation dates for the files are not on chronological order but dates appear to range between mid 2005 to late 2006. This is not something I've any experience with. Google searches have proved fruitless but I may not be using the best search terms (scm ### .tmp temp folder). Any help is much appreciated.

Edit: I'm using Windows XP. And I sorted out the NSIS error so I'm just curious about this .tmp file thing I had come across. It seems installers can't run if in a folder with foreign letters or characters (would a Korean or Japanese operating system amend this?); I wish Windows had just told me that directly. T_T

First off, .tmp files are normally safe to delete (as tmp stands for temporary). Also, any program will have difficulty executing its scripts, data, and whatever it should execute if it is in a foreign folder, as it will not resolve the conclusive string path (CSPATH) because it appears as random unidentifiable strings due to the foreign text looks like random codes.

Ok, that's good to know. Thanks for the quick response. :)

You can use CCLeaner to scan for, and then delete all of your temporary files.

Though generally these files are pointless, and unless you have a tiny hard drive, you don't have to worry about them.

I usually end up cleaning my temporary folder from time to time mostly due to some nasty previous experiences of spyware trying to hide itself there. Weird, I know but that's just my kind of luck. :P

As Neo said, CCleaner is an excellent tool for finding and removing unnecessary files.
