Well I went through my old games and found Diablo II, it install had worked fine on my old Win 2K Server, but I wanted it on my laptop which uses Vista.

I do not see many threads on the topic other than getting stuck at the first hurdle of "Program" in the registry.

Now I am getting;
"Error in script file SetupDat\inst.ins, line 14: undefined symbol (desktop)"

I have only started hacking away at this. Anyone have any ideas?

Run it via compatibility mode? Not sure how Vista handles stuff, sorry.

Diablo II and Vista have serious issues, there are many other people have trouble with them.

Have you checked Blizzard's Support pages?

Oh, yeah. Another case of Blizzard vs Vista (http://www.warboards.org/showthread.php?t=30235) issues. You see bamboo, Blizzard games like D2 and SC has some serious issues being circulated around Tech Annex recently. I was not able to help because it seems like Vista has a different architecture compared to its predecessors. So, sorry. But Neo is right, you should check the compatibility mode and set it to Win2k or WinXp.

Hello, I have tried compatibiliy mode as XP and 2k. I have seen a couple postings of this error appear before. However, I have not seen a resolution. Oh well, I will just keep hacking away at it.

Thanks,

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is complete BS.

How do I know this? Well, let's go down the list.

Entirely BS statistic? Check.
Entirely BS support for said statistic? Check.
Entirely BS solution? Check.

Yep, looks like grade A bullshit to me.

To be serious, I hear there's a patch or something for compatibility. I only heard about it from my brother, so I don't know any details.

Upgrading to XP from Vista *does* solve Vista's problems though. And that's a fact.

Funny, I am running iTunes right now, and its perfectly fine and guess what I have a vista machine

As for the problem you're facing, i have found what looks an awful lot like a solution by using google

google basically took me straight to that.

All of the following can be found here: http://forums.diabloii.net/showthread.php?t=560383&page=2

If installing Diablo 2 on Windows Vista you will need to make TWO registry changes.

Diablo 2 will look for two things during installation. It looks for the Start Menu and it looks for the Desktop.

The above thread will explain how to make the edit in the registry.
