I seen that many people post theior stories here, well this is my frist one...
So I was going through the cemetery where I always go through to school. And I seen a gypsy (woman) standing there asking for 10-20 dinars (about somewhat 15 cents) and I remembed that I had 50 dinars (about half a dolar) and I didnt watch what I pulled out of my pocket...
I gave her what I thinked that was 50 dinars,but...I gave her 200 dinars!!!!I mean youre a madman if you ever give somebody that much money...and the gypsy started yelling:"God knows where your destiny lies, thank you boy:".I thought was this woman realy that desperate?I looked at her hand and saw 200 dinars, then thought what should I do,take the money and leave or take the 200 and give her 50?
No I let her go,well...it was a nice feeling. She needs it more then me.

You gave the gypsy about $3.70 American. Does that really buy so much overseas?
At least you did a good deed.

Serbia, I think he was asking how much you gave in American Dollars. And if 50 dinar equals about half a dollar, I would assume (since I do not know your currency system I could be wrong) that 200 dinar, which is 4 times the amount of 50 dinar, would be about 2 dollars. Yes?
Or what kong said. CURSE YOU AND YOUR SMARTNESS KONG!!!!!
$3.70, that does not seem like alot.

wh it happens, although, it really is good to give someone money when you yourself really do not need it. I once gave a homeless guy a twenty, then he went to the liquor store and bout alcohol, I got mad a t first, but then I decided that since its a rough life anyway I'm not gonna give him any trouble

Not much but still youre crazy if you do that I mean would you?
What it could buy 2 pepsi (89 dinars one).
2 hamburgers (100 dinars one)
4 0.50 l coca colas (50 dinars one)
one of the reasons I like the internet is hearing stories like this -- hearing about different areas of the planet and experiences people have had.
I often try to be nice, but with beggers (here at least) it's difficult to know what is the right option... since many will waste anything you give them on alcohol or whatever.

That's really nice of you, warinserbia.
I remember when I was India, I came across a lot of people who were homeless and were asking for money. I would always give them money, but if I gave too much, I'd be taken advantage of. Sometimes it's hard to see who really needs the money, but other times it's plain obvious.
You know, it's nice that a lot of us donate to charities and stuff but we really don't see the end effect of our actions most of the time. Sure, we might see a picture of a poor starving kid in some card from the charity with a generic thank you message, but that's about it. When you actually give the money to people in need, it's a completely new feeling.
Anyways, GJ WIS. :)

To the people who are saying that WarInSerbia didn't give that much money : He gave around 10 times more than what the woman expected. Ofcourse she's happy.

Well, at least you did a good deed. Even though it cost you a meal.

Sounds familiar, here most beggars will refuse if you offer them food(sandwiches or bread or something) instead of money.

Nice of you to let her keep it. The most I've given out was 150 Swedish Krona (Which is like 30 dollars or something). I was intending to be nice and give 100, but a 50 slipped out and the guy thought it was for him too.

It might sound mean, but it's unfortunately true. When I lived in Slovakia the gypsy kids were always looking to swipe something from me, and the adults were always selling fake colognes and watches. Different culture I guess...
the trialthon of gypsies: go Swimming by feet, and back with a bicycle
Edit:
for those wondeing, trialthon is basically:
run 20 km
swim 5-20 km, cant remember what
bike 20 km
At least if my memory serves me right

Are you saying that you dont have gypsy's on the street begging for money?

Ahahaha, lol are you joking? I live in Romania, how can I not have gypsies on the streets begging, more gypsies here than anywhere sadly :/
You got blessed by a gypsy? How exactly? She only said "God knows where your destiny lies". Assuming God exists or whatever, that can still mean you have a dark future ahead of you. I wouldn't exactly call that a blessing. It sounds to me more like one of those standard horoscope stories, that can be applied to anyone. Why did you do this anyway? Out of charity? Empathy? Does such a thing exist? Aren't you trying to buy yourself a clean consciousness?

I think it's weird you never saw one. It's not like there aren't any in the Netherlands. Are you avoiding the cities or something?
And wow, Ahzz, your memory certainly does not serve you right. It's not a trial-thon but a tria-thlon. And you got the distances and order all messed up. I know for sure you have to run the distance of a marathon which is about 42 Km, with which it ends, not begins.

and im pretty damn sure that it isnt like that.

We usually kill beggars before they turn into a pest.
Nah, I live in a >50.000 people city, and I don't see beggars here. I've also been to Amsterdam a few times, but I really didn't see beggars or anything.

And not even a good one. Wouldn't it be handy if there was some sort of online encyclopedia where you could look things like this up within a mouseclick? Oh... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triathlon Hey, it seems the original running distance for the Triathlon was indeed 42 Km, and the current distance for the Iron man still is.

What? You see them everywhere, selling their newspapers (Daklozenkrant), playing their instruments, doing their acts, or just whining in general. I see one or two every day in Utrecht.

It's really awkward when you give more than what you expect to a beggar.
I mean, it seems like their praise is falsely won because you didn't mean to be THAT nice but at the same time it's locked into place by the fear of taking your money back.
Good for you, anyway.

Wtf, another Dutch guy.
I said beggars. Not homeless. Besides, I don't consider people playing instruments on the streets beggars, since they are providing a product (music, in someway) and you can donate money.
