Yes, exactly! Cortez is cool. A person who travels through time to pwn WWI scottish people, how cool is that?

Magus. He controls Arcane magics, can raise the dead, and commanded a legion of imp followers to destroy the humans - all the while really using the war as a diversion so he could summon Lavos, a terrible alien being slumbering in the Earth's core, so he could slay it and save the world from being destroyed a millennia later.

Oh, and he killed the human army's greatest knight, Cyrus, and turned his page into a frog, who in turn used his curse to wield the greatest sword the world has ever known, Masamune, and seek revenge for killing his master and twisting his form.

An anti-hero before anti-heroes were even popular.
