So I heard this *Whiiirrr, choke* then burnt smell from my mac :-/ I shut it down but, I can guess what the prob is. I hope the warranty is still valid :P Good thing I have a backup external disk. *sigh*

(Hm, my mistake. Seems to work now. :-/)

A belt? Nah, no belts in computers. That sux man. Have you checked the warranty yet?

Well it might have something to do with being a MAC, eg. Spawn of Satan.
Have you thought of that?

Please keep this shit out of the topic.

Anyway, what did burn?
Is it a laptop? Lately there have been issues with the batteries of those.

I would suggest that you remove the powercords from it though, so that it doesn't somehow catch fire again.

He only offered a reason why, I've had problems with one of my friends' Ibook(we shared a laptop for the summer) overheating, it would get way too hot to have on your lap in allot of cases. That was a G3 too. So needless to say I got a normal good kid HP laptop. Not a spawn of satan:P. However, if it helps, I do like allot of apples products, they're just a wee bit pricey. Also, you might want to stick with a desk top for the time being.

He only offered a reason why,

What you said was a good reason because you explained that macs have an overheating problem, but just saying the mac broke 'cause it's a mac doesn't make sense in a topic like this.

Sometimes the fan runs up on our old mac, but never a clunk or any burning smells. Do you think something could have gotten in the fan or something?

Don't be so sure, it's a mac.

I jest, I jest.

That sux Fratt, I hope its still on warranty as well.

I hate it when my toys die. <grumble>

You wouldn't happen to have had a first generation MacBook, would you? Mine died around 2 months ago due to a hard drive failure. Luckily, it belonged to the university so they gave me another one. Of the MacBooks our boss ordered for us at work, so far 20% have had hard drive failures, and the school of music here has had an every higher percentage fail.

Of course, when the hard drive failed, the computer became completely unresponsive, so you weren't quite to that stage yet, if the drive is the problem.

nope, it's an old PowerBook G4. The first aluminium generation. (Not that line with faulty batteries :P). Secondly, I think it's just the fan. Hopefully.

My PowerBook G4 lasted forever. I'm having overheating problems with my MacBook now :concern:

I've driven mine pretty hard for almost 3 years, so no wonder perhaps.

Since you think it's an overheating issue Fratt' (talking about past warranty time here), maybe it's the batteries life cycle that is expiring/has expired. If so, I suggest you to open it and detach the said item from its connectors 8and eventually remove it from the PowerBook. Similar was happening to me and that's how I solved it. Made the laptop much lighter too. ;)
But still am wondering if gonna buy another battery of if am going to keep it solely power cord fed (much like regular computers). :P
