Perhaps it would be useful to post the links to download it. :)

You can download Vassal there:
http://www.vassalengine.org/community/index.php

and you can download the 3.2 module version there:

...How legal is this?

...How legal is this?

Don't ask questions, download it surreptitiously and quickly before they shut it down.

But to answer the question: Its perfectly legal, as we are not using material from Games Workshop. So their trademarks or copyrights are untouched.

A new version will be out soon.

The 'Fist sprites are too green

http://uk.games-workshop.com/legal/canandcant/1/

"* The game or mod must not devalue any Games Workshop product in any way."

Taken from the MODIFICATIONS, TOTAL CONVERSIONS, AND GAMES section of their extensive legal page.

I wouldn't be suprised to see this thread closes tomorrow, there was a recent thread about trying something like this, but we found out it probably would be shut down as well.

edit: Kongy, your tattoos are probably illegal as well.
"This also means that we cannot allow tattoos as an acceptable use of our IP as a third party necessarily has to perform the "service.""

Anyone want a scapel?

The imperials Fists are yellow in game. :)

And as I said, the module is perfectly legal. :) You should also not think that only the things that Games Workshop claims to be legal is actual legal. In fact Games Workshop acts itself only at the edge of legality (no discount policy for example).

kongurous

Edge of legality isn't the question here (and discount policies aren't required where I come from.) I just don't want Games Workshop suing this site for this, nor any of our members.

They cant. How should they?

But do what you desire, I only wanted to show it to you and canvass new players. :)

IMO, for now, the IP policy seems a little too clear for us to even shield ourselves with any sort of 'legal grey area' shield.

And GW's legality is irrelevant. Tu Quoque (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tu_quoque) does not an adequate defence make.

However, kong's evaluation is that this is all legal, so it's his prerogative in this case.

As I said. :) Btw. this was no tu quoque, more the opposite.

And here are more news:

Here is 3.4 wich is only a fast update until 3.5 comes out, but it features bases and many new sprites and usefull utilities.

Warhammer 40k Module 3.4 (http://www.bestsharing.com/files/kw7iU376163/FORDK1-1.zip.html)

In short (not complete):
--Necrons
--Map Layers – hills, vegetation, roads, buildings, infantry, vehicles, counters ( will keep models slipping under hills and such)
--private map windows for army composition (a place to put the models but not on the main map)
--movement trails
--multi board support ( done in 12” or 24” blocks?)
--Deviation Dice – located in Counters[Misc]. Random direction and hit/miss roll. Move forward 1”. Area of effect for 3,5,7 and 10 inch blasts.
- Cleaned out the terrain pieces. (free rotation eats up a lot of memory and doing it on large terrain pieces will eat up even more)
- Terrain can now be selected using Shift-Click. (Ctrl-Shift-Click would not work for me for some reason)
- Turn tracker intalled. Tracks turn number, player side and phase. Left in the ‘end of phase’ buttons just in case the turn tracker is not liked.
- Mouse over viewer will now show model information (wargear) instead of location
- Scatter dice installed. Located in the counters/misc folder. Put it on target and roll. Will randomly select hit or miss and rotate to a random facing. If a miss is indicated just move the piece that many inches (CTRL-UP ARROW). Has the option of 3,5,7 and 10 inch blast areas.
- Configurable sized maps. You can now select any number of 24” x 24” sections you want and each one can be a separate color if desired. (selection of 5 colors)
- 2 more map windows so people can organize their armies away from the map. Kind of on
Complete Editthe honor system if the other person is not supposed to see it until deployment.
-image capture added to table map window (snapshot of the current map. Nice for battle reports)

There is a Battlefleet Gothic mod somewhere, so I imagine there will be a fantasy one (not that BFG is obscure as hell or anything :P)

DarkScipio

Unfortunally there is no fantasy module, not long ago (before we did it:)) there was no playable 40k module also.

Hmm, suprising that.

Probably a result of the steriotypical fantasy gamer (middle aged, beard etc) not being any good on a computer, it isnt true, but the steriotype is there.

This seems legal enough from what I can discern, I mean they name it the warhammer whatev, but in the actual piece on mods, games and conversions this is completely legal assuming there is no commercial gain, that GW is properly credited in some attached document with the mod, and that the game is actually correctly the game it is meant to represent.

so yeah as long as it satisfies that stuff, as far as I can deduce its fine

I've dabbled a bit in it. I was very impressed. Requires a fair amount of bookkeeping, and a sound knowledge of the rules, but that's fair enough.

Really, it just gives you the models and a table.

It's convenient enough to be useful, while not actually detracting from the plus sides of actual tabletop.

Also, it pretty much requires you have the BBB and codex for your units.

Overall, quite impressed. Further, it's simply a mod and it doesn't even infringe the stats of units. IT would just be like making a total conversion of another game to use 40K models instead, so it seems perfectly viable and I really doubt it constitutes a threat to GW's IP any more than making a TC would.

Do you have any suggestions or whishes, how it could be better, or what should be impleted?

Ktan
12-31-2007, 7:13 AM
Well, first, the Ultramarines don't actually have a Tactical Missile Launcher Marine. That's one thing that struck me. Also, I'd suggest a slight change in the dimensions of the Dark Angel's Landraider

Thus far, I'd simply suggest that you expand the sprites, more Chapters/Chaos Legions and Terrain, which is something I believe you are doing anyway. If I ever get round to it, I might dabble in making a couple for you.

If it's possibly, maybe an option to tell you how many, for example, 3+'s you rolled without having to manually count them, but I think I'm probably being a bit too picky and lazy there :P

If anything else springs to mind, I'll post it here or at Bolter & Chainsword

Yes I am working on sprites all the time. 3.5 will include complete sets Space Wolves, Dark Angels and Raven Guard. New Imperial Guard and some superheavies and flyers. If you have time we are always happy to get new sprites/spriters.

We also made a dice bag.

Now there is a ladder for your Warhammer 40k Module games on Vassal.
You only have to register and join the ladder and can report every game against other ladder members then:

Warhammer 40k Module online matches ladder (http://www.vassalengine.org/tournaments//ladder.php?ladderid=13)

It would be also possible to put up more ladders, like a special Warboards only ladder or sometimes a Forum ladder to find out which forum fields the best players. ;)

I hope you enjoy it.
