I was just wondering about modding. Is it possible to give Marines shielding (like protoss units) and also does everyone need the mod or just the person who started a map (I mean distribute it like a map on b.net)? I was just wondering because I'm thinking of getting into modding and possibly making a Halo-type level.

No and No. :p j/k

You can use either Arsenal III or Arsenal Zero to modify .dat files (which will include things such as shields, weapon damage, etc.). To implement these changes, you will need to place the modified .dat files into an mpq (I recommend MPQ2K but I'm sure someone else will disagree) and use a program such as MPQDraft to load the custom patch into StarEdit or StarCraft.

With your custom loaded into StarEdit, you can manipulate the unit properties that you've added just as you can manipulate the normal properties.

However, for other people to play the game, they will need both the .mpq "patch" and the map you made.

These programs (and much more) can be found at http://www.campaigncreations.org/starcraft/programs/index.shtml and probably also at StarEdit.net.

Alright, so If I'd want to make a halo map, I'd have to make sure they have the patch?

erm... WTF is MPQ2K?

Mo'PaQ 2000
A command line driven MPQ editor. If you have any experience with MS-DOS, it should be quite simple to use.

For the lazy there is:
WinMPQ

EDIT: Yes Spdstr, if you were to modify the unit data, the other players would need the patch you created and the map.
