I wanted to see this movie ever since I've seen the preview because it looks like one of those movies that is all bloody and gory. A couple of days ago I finally got to see it, the whole graphics thing was pretty cool.
But one thing that was wrong with the movie is that it only has very few action scenes. Ya know all that shit. But the few action scenes were pretty well done. And the movie needed to be a bit longer.
So now I wonder, what do you think of the movie? I thought is was cool.

I've only seen a trailers on TV so far, and they weren't very clear though. All I could make out is that the movie is largely about a bald guy yelling at people, and a dragon.

Got to love the lack of literary education in this thread. Can anyone tell me anything about Beowulf that they didn't Google for or glean from a trailer for this movie?

It's an epic poem that the movie jacked and disgraced.
Way to ruin another literary masterpiece, hollywood.

Ok, go to you tube and look for a trailer. Like Zerg eater did.
I'm not giving away any spoilers, but this movie takes place in Noric Denmark, like the time of Vikings and all that cool shit. You should watch the movie first, you'd like it. :)
Oh, and for Gunmonk, you see Angelina Jolies barbie doll vagina, that's all. :D

He meant that everyone here, like you, knows nothing about the real beowulf. This is just a cheap hollywood version of a classic book, which modred and I have read, and are clearly the only ones who have.

I certainly is 'epic' in the sense that's a long time to read, partly because it's just a long story and the language is, let's say, outdated (read: at least a thousand years old) and modernizing it runs the risk of ambiguity.
I wouldn't call it a masterpiece, however. The fact it has lasted across the ages is irrelevant; Hesiod is one of the oldest sources of literature and I consider he and his works cock suckers. Much like Newton and his dreaded invention: gravity.
As far as the movie goes, I haven't seen it yet. I hear it stays mostly true to the story but takes some liberties with Grendel and Grendel's mother.

Granted, olde english (in which beowulf was written) is formulaic and rather forced at many points, but it is nonetheless a story that stood the test of time and conveys a classic, yet somehow different theme.

Fixed.
Also, IMAX disorients the shit out of me. The experience isn't worth it.

When I hear Beowulf, I think of a guy who chills with wolves, but 'wolf' is spellt 'wulf', so it doesn't make a difference.

Never ever seeing it. Can't stand the visual look of it.
Plus I'd rather just read the book since I have to read it for my History course anyway (go go finals in a couple weeks).

Beowulf is inspired by an old Celtic/Germanic tale called Beowulf & Grendel. It's a pretty simple story. Beowulf and his gang live in a fort. One night a terribly monster comes from the marshes, Grendel. He's you're run-of-the-mill asshole and kills everyone except Beowulf. Big battle between Beowulf and Grendel, which results in Grendel and his sibling getting killed by Beowulf.
This pisses off Grendel's mom, dunno what she was killed. She fights with Beowulf. IIRC they are both mortally wounded and die.
That's how I remember the original tale. Dunno how much of this is actually used in the movie. Not a lot, I guess. 8th century (I think) bards' tales don't translate very well in to blockbusters.
Yeah, I knew that before I posted. Didn't feel like it telling everyone, because I assumed people would either already know, or not care at all. Meh, my e-peen has been salvaged.
Coming to think of it, my original analysis also kinda works for the original tale. 'All I could make out is that the movie / epic tale is largely about a bald guy yelling at people, and a dragon / monster.' :P

I never knew Beowulf was a made up story until I found out..... after I saw it. I mean, the dragon thing kinda gives that away.

mmmhhmmm, If anybody cares to read it and find out some of the history you can do that here (http://www.lone-star.net/literature/beowulf/), Unfortunately its a "translated" version

Beowulf is some jerk with like, super strength. He kills monsters.
Grendel is pissing off some king who built a giant party hall by eating everyone who goes to party.
Beowulf and his posse go out to protect the place, for fun.
Grendel pops in, eats a dude, and gets his arm ripped off by Beowulf.
Grendel's mom comes in while everyone is celebrating, and eats some dude.
Beowulf gets magic gear and goes to kill the mom. He wins.
Beowulf gets some treasure.
Fifty years later, some poor guy pisses off a dragon.
The dragon melts Beowulf's house.
Beowulf rides out with friends to kill the dragon.
Beowulf attacks the dragon solo, gets bit, and finally gets help to kill it.
He dies. The end.
