Well, i've decided i am going to attemt to make a UMS map.. So i am wondering what you if any of you have some advice or tips for a newbie map maker, Any would be appreciated. Also, how exactly do you go about giving different units special abilities.. For example, how do you get a marine to cloak?

Well, on the UMS, ask a specific question and ill prolly be able to help... and on givinbg units other special abilities, that becomes modding, its no longer m,ap making... unless you mean like using the doodad state trigs to cloak things in scxe...

I'd recommend using the one that came on the CD first, it's just easier than typing with StarForge. I'd also suggest for the mapping part to use StarDraft, great program for that. I use:

StarDraft for Mapping
StarForge for unit laying
StarEdit for Locations and triggers.

Well, yes, and no. You CAN use different editors, but StarEdit will delete overlapping objects, so just be careful about that. I also hear SCXE (StarCraft Xtra-Editor) works extremely well for triggers. I dont' know though because I need to get my expansion back to see just how good it is.

erm... stardraft is outdated
and... the hell? triggers are easy with SF,you can do more, SF also has much better locations... just use Sf for everything except isometrical terrain.

For a beginner who isn't good with trigger StarEdit would work better (I dont' use it because I can't stand typing for countless hours until I get it perfect ;))

P.S. StarDraft 2 Isn't outdated, to me anyway, it still works ;).

stardraft... 2?

im not even going to ask.

Oh and by the way, if you dont use starforge, you should use the starcraft x-tra editor rather then normal staredit, it has such better capabilities.

Yah SCM Draft 2 ;), you never heard of it? Oh well, and I don't really know how good x-tra editor is because I need to get my expansion pack back ;).

StarDraft is not the same as SCMDraft. StarDraft is an outdated modding utility.

After you've got a hang of the way things work, try x-tra editor, and SCMdraft 2. After you get really good, move on to Starforge. (note: using x-tra, scmdraft, and starforge together is the best combination in my opinion)

~ Spdstr OK, s-t-a-r is very different from s-c-m please learn your common sence.

stardraft is an outdated modding utility, and SCMdraft is a map making program that doesnt have triggers and screws up maps.

? what does SC expansion pack have to do with SCXE?

oh and bluemicrobyte, i seriously suggest starting out with and using SCXE, not the default campagin edtior. SCXE doesnt require any special skills or anything, it just has better capabilities (as in, you can place buildings on any terrain, you can place units for all three races for one player, start locations can overlap, you can have up to 255 locations as apposed to 63, etc.) why do you reccomend the default campaing editor?

oh and i do not reccomend SCMDraft 2 because it always corrupts up my maps.

Perhaps bluemicrobyte is recomending a packaged editor because it has all the basic functions you need, and you can be sure that it is not an editor problem when your maps don't work.

I wouldn't recomend SCMDraft 2 either (SCMDraft is ok), nor would I recomend SF unless you are comfortable with more basic editors. Corrupted maps can be a bitch.

I would agree on most of the ppl around here said. I tested out SCMDraft (don't know wich version), SF (StarForge) n' SC X-tra 2.6. I use this last 1, since it lets me use all the A.I. scripts existing in the game, like the Share Vision A.I. trigger or the placing units/buildings on all existing tilesets, amongst others. StarForge 2 me though seems a lot more easy 2 use compared 2 SCMDraft since it has more of a StarEdit look (Blizzard's original Map Editor app, wich happens even more with SC X-Tra) and better trigger editing than SCMDraft. In this last 1 (SCMDraft) if I had a previous map (made in Staredit, 4 example) with a comment on the trigger, it would only show me the comment name n' the rest of the trigger crap (the most important part of'em) is left over 2 the side... 4 me, not a very good asset on a map editor!
I used StarForge only 2 check upon stuff under locations easier, and 4 the Pylon's powering area. But now I realized that it's a 2 Pylons away radius from the original placed Pylon (it's gotta be parcially placed under a 8 grid squares in-line 2 be powered)

Sorry. I had 2 finish this last post all over the sudden, since I was posting it at the office...

I don't know if there is any tutoring section on modding/editing SC common properties around here, but I've eard it already.
Can some of u please lead the way 2 it? If so, Tks!

:with:
Also, SCM Draft 2 doesn't mess up my maps (if you're talking about the 65x64 map size bug, yah, it sometimes does that ;))
