I read the faq about rep
What is "reputation power"? Reputation power is how many points you add to someone's reputation when you approve of one of their posts. Your reputation power will increase by one point depending on:
Days since registration (every 365 days)
Post count (every 1,000 posts)
Reputation points (every 100 points) Administrators give ten points of reputation.
Do we get rep automatically? Or does an admin have to give it, because it doesn't seem like I get rep after another hundred posts.

You don't gain rep after reaching these milestones. You give one additional point each time you rep someone for each milestone you reach.
For example, if you have been at WarBoards for a little over a year, have 2000 posts, and 150 reputation points, each time you rep someone they will gain 5 reputation points (1 to start, 1 for the year, 2 for post count, and 1 for your own rep).

Because they have nothing better to do? Other than gazing to their own blue balls, that is. :P

Why would we give you rep?
If you want rep, don't ask for it. Be a good ,normal, polite member and you will eventually recieve rep.
It's not much of a deal really.

*Hint, hint* Similarly to what 'Dutch said most of my karma came through being helpful towards fellow members or simply due to my humourous and/or witty remarks. ;)

To me rep is like....popularity or showing that you amused or intrested people and you're actually worth something....or you just have a lot of friends....or bragging rights

The problem with the rep system is that the more rep you get, the more points you give. So the person you give rep to can in turn, give more points around. Eventually the system becomes inflated (like everyone having 10-50 balls).
I remember when everyone had 1 ball or 2 balls. It was more interesting because it was rare. Now everyone has countless numbers and it seems valueless. If the rep system was changed so it was linear -- every rep gives you one point -- I think it'd be more valuable. You'd have an accurate reading of how many people actually like your posts.
Better yet, I think it'd be better to do away with the rep / ball system and just leave the commenting system around. If there was a way to turn off the balls and still be able to read the comments, I'd be all over that.

There is a way to turn off the balls, but I don't think u can read the comments :/

Interesting notion B.I. Although imho it could simply display a some sort of icon, like the scale button being highlighted/glowing to let it's own makers now that that post was 'gifted' (somewhat similarly to warnings/infractions). But you still can see the comments made to your post if you click on the karma button yourself (although unfortunately you can't see you made those comments on the post itself).

Yes you can. Try clicking on one of your own posts that you know that it has received karma and you'll see the reputation comments 'gifted' to it. ;)

What the hell are you saying?
We all hate each other? And you're the only one being nice to BasaN? Srsly man wtf. Just because you're not showered in rep doesn't mean we all suck.
Ass-kissing mods won't help you. If you break a rule, they infract. It's as simple as that.

Off topic: It's called Face Maker. I believe galiant made a thread about it.
On topic: rep is no big deal. I've got one ball of rep and I don't care :) I can turn it off anytime :P
Basan: uh yea, but it would be kind of annoying to periodically click on every post I make to see if it has received any comments.

Hence that my previous post's idea (http://www.warboards.org/showpost.php?p=547217&postcount=12) for the karma button glow/flash that only the user (and staff) could see about his posts enticing him to see why that particular post got karma. :_poke:

Looks like other people's standards for giving rep are much higher.

Or, better yet, maybe a post rating system. (sorta like a thread rating system except for individual posts) Rep is overrated and not needed. All it is, is a way to inflate your ego. I've said that from day 1 and I'm still sticking by it.
Rep motivates me. also i always thought of it as the more rep balls you have the bigger your balls.. i only gotz 1...
they should restart the rep system so that it is like 1 point per rep given..

Quoted for great justice
that would be a pretty solid idea because then balls would actually mean something, I mean 100 great posts to get another ball, of course then instead of the current ball messages it could be a rep count.

They're trying to glean rep points.
I think we should get badges for how many posts we have.
Example: (badge name) requires 5000 posts.... or so.....

Except then, instead of people begging for karma, we would just have people posting insane amounts of garbage to get their next ball or badge.

Isn't that kinda the idea of Custom User Titles? (when you're not using a modified one)

Meh..... There's always a catch.
I've seen other forums with the "badge" sytem but it's not quite the same as what I've had in mind. Like Steam's forums has something like "3 stars = 1000 posts" or so. But that probably won't stop the spam problem. Admin will figure this out....
lol that'd be pretty awsome to have military ranks like in WiC online and like the more post you have you get promoted to like lieutenant or private 1st class to corporal and commander in chief and etc.

i like the rep system though i do agree with black ice that we should just change it so that every rep you get is +1
and instead of balls mayb we could get something kewler

We used to have something like that. It disappeared shortly after I joined. (about 2 months) I don't remember the reason why off hand.

Probably just another one of those spam problems where people try to be the best and get the highest badge they can.

Wrong... yet again. Do you wanna try again for the double score when results can really change? :P
Now for real, it just was a different way to try having the post count displayed by having different colours and number of stars (or squares, don't exactly recall). ;) But has I remind its implementation had a kinda controversial reception and thus it was bagged for a later time.
