View Full Version : Mass Transportation

Looking upon some of the new things on Starcraft II, I can't help but notice the emphasis put on mass transportation. The Zerg's unconfirmed Nydus Worm, and the Protoss's transportation capabilities involving the Pylon...What's next? I mean, really, this could change the way Starcraft is played. These new additions could possibly render the old tank drop obsolete, along with many other loved strategies from Starcraft and Brood War. Any thoughts?

I think that this sort of emphasis will make things like the tank drop even more common; instead of merely dropping in a few tanks, you drop in some tanks and a couple ghosts, then use the ghosts to pinpoint surprise marines on select locations to keep the enemy busy long enough to set the tanks up. Instead of dropping reavers, you use a phase prism to drag in a few units in energy form, then set up its pylon radius and warp in some photon cannons while spawning in dark templar in the back to confuse the enemy while they're busy dealing with the obvious assault.

I think that this will only serve to put fast paced as an emphasis to the large battles clashes even more common than what they used to be in SC-BW (now even more in the blink of an eye). And eventually that you must think more strategically than what was used to since now defensive replay stances will be a lot quicker to obtain that what was also used to.

Why so scared about changes? if the usual drops become obsolete, they'll open way to more intricate and interesting maneuvers. Reaper harassment, Colossus micro, etc. Not to mention, we're not yet taking tiers into account. Phase prism may not be a viable replacement for reaver drops if it's too high up the tech tree.

...Because Reaver drops aren't... oh, right. High Tier 3. But on the whole, good point.

Still lower than a massive recall for example :D

I wonder if overlords will still have ventral sacs, or if you'll have to get a nydus worm? o_O

They'll most likely have ventral sacs. Either that or the mutalisk can grab unsuspecting zerglings and take off with them in the air. 0.o

Seriously, overlords' ventral sacs are mandatory. I once did a massive 12 overlord drop with about a hundred Zerglings. Tis fun.

Or maybe the overlords are the ones who can summon nydus canals, like ghosts can summon drop pods. They *did* say they were making overlords more interesting.

Actually, that's just 96 zerglings :P

Pretty sure 96 is about a hundred.

Do we have any idea whether Nydus Worm transports just lings or other units as well?

im sure it will transport other units, but given that we havent seen any non-ling ground units, it'd be hard to say.

I think these mass teleportation devices are teir 3.. I'm sure the common tank drop will still be very much apart of the game.

I would like to think the Nydus Worm could carry more than Zerglings. Haha, I can imagine though. A Nydus Worm full of Banelings pops up in an enemy base and obliterates their main...that would be a sight to see. Anyways, interesting points everyone.

protoss dont have mass transport, you can place building units in a psionic field, but that's it. the phase prisim is just a shuttle other than transforming into a temp pylon(an ablity which is probably a later tech):o

The overlords will be able to launch nukes. And lazers.

Joking aside, we have to remember the SC universe, and what's happening after the brood war. The SC factions adapted just like our military works. During SC1, everything was more...sudden. Everyone covered all their bases, the protoss had a weapon for attacking enemy airship (corsair), a stealth and espianage unit (Obs, Dt [sorta]), a Heavy All-purpose Assault ship (Carrier), and so on, same with the other factions. SC2's units will focus on hitting the enemy's weak points while covering yours. And mass transportation falls in such a catagory.

i hated overlords as transports anyway.
