Dear you guys,

I'm very new to the Warhammer 40k tabletop game and am looking to start. Thing is though, I have no idea where to start army-wise.
Are army choices completely based on preference due to codex lore and junk, or do they all play differently? I've been reading about the game for a bit now and was also wondering if the rules for large battles
would be daunting for a first time player. Any halp would be very appreciated, and if there's already a thread that answers these questions in detail, then disregard. I'll use the search function next time.

Every army in the game has their own distinct flavor and abilities, but when Games Workshop starts releasing codices, it really seems as if there's one codex to beat. And it quickly becomes apparent no-one will beat it until the next batch of codices. The Apocalypse rules streamline the process of gigantic battles and even someone who has played for the first time can pick it up and go. It helps knowing the ranges on movement and weapons, though.

If you want tips on what army to start with, the Space Marines are probably your best bet. They have a little bit of everything with tactics, they're simple to paint, and if you're into one dimensional characters buttpounding other one dimensional characters then go Marines.

While I'm not a huge fan of 9 foot tall behemoths in armor buttpounding
each other and their enemies alike, I did take interest in the Daemon Hunters. I'm sure the rules are alot easier to understand once I actually sit down and play my first game rather than just reading stuff online, the way most things are. Are the Daemon Hunters a good race to start with? One race in particular aside from Daemon Hunters that really interests me are the Orks. The idea of fielding an army of space faring Chavs is hilarious.

The Daemon Hunters aren't as simple as the Space Marines, but the only real bad starting race is the Dark Eldar or Eldar.

Also, Space Marines range in height from 7.5-9 feet, mostly being in the 8 foot range. In armor, at least, they're shorter in unarmored (as to be expected.)

Seal, wtf are you talking about.

Orks are getting an update in January, so you'll be playing a 'new army'. Until then, though, I'd only buy things like Ork Boyz, and it would also mean waiting until January to bother buying a codex, because the current one is not only being phased out, but is also terribly out of date.

Daemon Hunters are quite cool, and their codex is fairly recent, but I think they are something of a specialised force.

If your favourites are daemonhunters and orks then I'd go with orks. Daemonhunters are quite an elite army so you will be fielding a smallish number of models who you have very little flexibility in modelling/painting and the novelity of have guns on their arms wears off. Orks on the other hand will give you plenty of opportunity to learn how to paint effectively and REALLY mess around with your models however you want...you could give your army lots of big guns, or stolen advanced technology, or just make your army run around with bones, those are all things orks would do.

40k is designed so you can pick up the game and play with only the simplest understanding of the rules. Go down to the local gamesworkshop or hobby store and ask when they have demo games you can play, assuming they are good then they will have a ref who will walk you through the game.

I think even though orks are undergoing a codex change it would be fairly safe to buy most models, just hold back off elite and heavy support choices at the moment, HQ choices are likely to get a major update too, and new models. You could buy something like kommandos and if they get removed, just use them as normal boyz models (especially if you buy ones with heavy weapons).

I doubt Kommandos will be removed. They only game out with Cities of Death, and moulds are quite expensive so it's only uber special models or models that are being replaced that will be phased out purely for aesthetic reasons.

I'm not sure if they'd phase out Kommandos for gameplay reasons.

Then again, they'd make great Nob models anyway.

I'm in the similar situation, execpt I have chosen the Tau as my army, heres anwser from an unexperianced newb, read the history's of the different armys, and look and the differnt units they can have, And choose which one you like the best, be it you like there views on life, or if you think they just look badass.
