View Full Version : Hotmail finally jumping on the bandwagon?

As you know, Yahoo has already upgraded their facilities in an attempt to compete with Gmail. However, MSN Hotmail, which was already far behind yahoo as far as storage space before the yahoo upgrade, has remained almost exactly as it has been for years--little space and basic features.
But then, as I checked my hotmail today, I noticed something in the corner of the homepage. It has been outlined in red for easy viewing. Yes, I know the image is over 100k, but screenshots are usually around 1 Mb, so be happy I got it this small without losing any quality.

Anyway, it looks as though Hotmail will try to outdo Yahoo!, but why wait until Autumn? That is the question...seems almost like a plea of "Don't leave yet! We'll upgrade soon! We promise!" The big question is will it actually improve, or will it just be the same old Hotmail with more storage?
Architechture with poor expandability?
Or just they don't have enough machines to supplement the upgrades yet..
my guesses.

Argh.. :)

They have to purchase and install the infrastructure. Yeah you are right that "big question" is a good one. Will Hotmail offer better user service, or just more space?

Yeah, yeah...I'll crop unimportant parts of the screenshot...

I never really noticed that Hotmail was losing it's users. I thought that Yahoo was the small company and Hotmail the big one.

The thing is, Yahoo has been offering 2 to 3 times more storage than Hotmail for the last couple of years, and now Yahoo is offering 100 megs of storage and nifty features like keyboard shortcuts.
Hotmail is just a basic email service with a 2 megabyte limit. The combination of Gmail and the new Yahoo would be enough to severely drain Hotmail's userbase. So MSN has to upgrade or be left behind.

That really cleared it up, Thanks. So I guess that it's going to be sort of nifty with all of these new shortcuts and stuff. But, like he said, it's a must to have them.

Why do people even use MSN?
Is it becuase of the whole MSN Passport/Messenger bullshit? I mean is it really that important?

It's really in the benefit of these companies to offer a lot of space, because it looks good and gets members, yet, most of the members will never fill it. I know that i'll never fill a gigabyte of email unless i'm still using this in 20 years, and most people are like that. A lot of people won't ever fill 250 on hotmail either, it just looks better.

That's the only reason I use hotmail, for MSN. The email service is horrible anyway, half the times it says the server has too many requests.

MSN has no choice. Gmail is offering 1GB, Yahoo! 100MB and Hotmail is still on 2MB. Shows you how far they are behind.

I use it because it is linked to an online class I'm taking at the moment. However, future classes will be through my Gmail account.

Well I took hotmail beore microsoft owned it and it was one of the best if not the best those times....i guess i still use it (just a bit) cause i haven't gotten around to shifting the mail id from various online services. But it's good to see hotmail following suit...but i guess that would mean more spam ;)

hmmm, so after I left yahoo and hotmail they decide to upgrade. I'm a paying customer from earthlink and I get 10 MB of storage. (But I also get about 6-8 email accounts, i forgot how many, each with 10 MB of email and 10 MB or webspace, so thats really 120-160 MB, but still, im paying them!!)
free email addresses sometimes restrict the use of some services, as they are considered insecure.
