OK, who are the - Catachans, Voystron and desert peeps.

I read about the Catachans they sound cool, and with these factions are they "pure" armys of em or can u add em to an existing IG army?

Depends on what edition of the rules you are talking about, you get old rules which aren't meant to be used with current rules but are balanced and reliable then you get unofficial rules, trial rules and update/incorporated rules which are unreliable, unbalanced and incomplete respectively. Catachans were intended to be a pure army played with a particular type of scenerio although can be used as an addon. Voystron were intend to be an addon but can be used as a pure army and I don't know about desert peeps. I think Kong will know more about the currently used rules for each since he knows all;)

Currently all bar the vostroyans are played using the doctrines system in the Codex. The Vostroyan Firstborn have a list and rules in White Dwarf 317.

3rd edition 40k saw Codex: Catachans which had rules and a list for deathworld veterans armies, Suffice to say WS4 and heavy flamers were in abundance. Also lots of trees. In the White Dwarf for the month of its release there were rules for carniverous vegetation.

Singo here has it pretty much down.

Word for the wise: while the Catachans might seem cool, a pure Catachan-themed army isn't going to be very effective against, say, a Chaos Space Marine army. Flamers are nice, but so is a much higher leadership. Build your armies in blocks of around 500 points (that's what I do, at least) and plan out what things you want to get when you build on. I don't throw my entire IG army around when I'm fighting, I pick and choose my guys for the situation and opponent.

Well, if you just want a theme without using doctrines then add themedness to your army selection.

Their homeworld have a touch of chaos or near, say, the eye of terror? Sanctioned psykers. They well trained and equipped? Fill your elites slots with stormtroopers. Tolerant of abhumans? Ratlings and ogryns. From a forgeworld? Tanks by the bucketload and 2 enginseers. Strong Ecclesiarchy presence? Grab some Priests.

There is a lot of customisation you can do even if you dont want to use the doctrines.

Even if they aren't from a forge world you could still load them down. My 512th Cadian makes very liberal use of heavy armor on the philosophy that a rifles regiment needs some sort of shield.

Of course, any IG army that isnt droptroops or light infantry has a tendancy to be armoured like a bugger, but if they are from a forgeworld its probably compulsary.

k all of the factions are just show just like space marine chapters they are just an element to throw you off. go base then figure what you like do do out then choose a faction or just make a custom.
