try not to get your shooty units into slashy situations and you should do fine.

Oh god, +rep.
That is good advice but i kinda already figured that out lol.

Well, first things first, love the gunline. look at the table and find some fire-arcs for your heavy weapons. Then put your infantry squads in front of them. Hug cover wherever you can. Take as many heavy weapons as you can get your grubby mitts on.

Or, theres option B Divide your army into 2, a victory flank and a scarificial flank. Deploy them with a good (24") distance between them. The enemy will either deploy heavily on one side or split his forces to take one one flank each. As before, take as many heavy weapons as possible.

EVERYTHING shoots at the forces headed for you victory flank, ignore whats headed for the sacrificial flank. Once everything threatening you victory flank is dead, turn your guns on the stuff that will by now probably be halfway through dismembering your sacrificial flank.

Split deployment, a beginners guide (http://www.librarium-online.com/forums/showthread.php?t=92866)

Finally, option C, for the maniac in you. Droptroops (my preferred option)

Take nothing in your army that cannot make use of the deepstrike doctrine (except stormtroopers, who can deepstrike anyway if you pay the points) Use sentinels with improved comms to make sure your army turns up on time.

And drop EVERYTHING bar your heavy weapon squads in your army within rapid fire range of the enemy.
Proceed to las the living hell out of your opponent. This will tend to result in very bloody carnagetastic games where there is only a few half strength units on either side left by the end of turn 6.

Or you will get completely massacred by combat troops. But that happens in normal games too.

Neither of those was written by me by the way so dont try giving me credit for them :P

I know this may sound a little crazy, coming from a Tau and Space Marine player (even though I'm now assembling a Storm Trooper Commando Force!), but I would suggest that you hunker down in a table corner with your heavy weapons teams and move those guardsmen throughout the first two turns until you are within Rapid Fire Range. Try to stay in cover and have your heavy weapons teams covering you (obviously), but get as clear a field of fire as you can within the first couple of turns for your lasgun tootin troopers. You may have to take some casualties from enemy fire along the way but bear in mind that your heavy weapons teams will dish it back until you are in position. But once you are in position, and providing you have a clear field of fire, your guardsmen have just become a firing squad and it should be over in a couple more turns.

Remember, I'm not experienced with playing the Imperial Guard, but I have played against them and, admittedly, lost several times to this tactic or a variation of it, I was surprised to see these frail guardsmen rapidly closing distance with my Death Company once. I thought I could break them with pistol from my Company and boltguns from my taq squad and then march in a turn later and commence the slaughter, but that didn't work and so I got the crap shot out of my Death Company, "Feel No Pain" and all. Damn if only I had jump packs that time!

k all you need to do if form 3 lies first line tanks you could move them or not just make sure you can get a large template off. line 2 infantry these r your buffer try to keep them as a shield and only charge as a last resort. lie 3 artillery and heavy weps just sit and shoot. this should work well for a standard kill game but if you are going to cap an objective then you need to push the first 2 lines up and dont stop charging. you will loose a few but in the end if you stick it out you will be victorious. if you got strom troopers or sentinels then you just dorp them in behind the enemys heavys (they'll almost kill you when a sentinel or storm trooper (wth meltabombs) rips apart their monalith.
