Budding Space Marine army

I bought my nephew a Battle for Macragge set for his birthday and he doesn't want the Space Marines, just the Tyranids. So I'm stuck here with a tactical squad and Lieutenant Varras. I figured "hey, let's expand on these marines", but the problem here is I have no idea what to buy next.

Suggestions?

Another taq squad, plus an hq, and you are set. What you want with the army is up to you.

HQ should either be a chapter master for a shooty army, a chaplain for an assualt, or a lib for killing things.

I know how to make a bare-bones playable army, that isn't what I asked. Thank you, however, for your time.

Assault marines are always a good buy. Even a shooty army needs a reaction force to hold an enemy charge in place.

If you're going for a mechanized army, try stuffing the table with rhinos and predators. He can't pop every vehicle on the battlefield. Bassically buy lots of rhinos, with predators.

A bike army might not be a good idea. From what I can tell, you're going for cheapness, and a taq sqaud isn't exactly the most usefull thing for a bike army.

A devastor squad is usually a must.

but, S7 AP2 blast! and you only have to pass a 3+ save.

When I can, I'm getting 4 havocs with plasma cannons for my chaos army. >.>

Sorry, but lascannons are MUCH safer and MUCH cheaper in your tactical squads. Devs are fire magnets as is, lascannons just give make them hold up a sign that says

"SHOOT ME! FREE POINTS!1!111!"

Seriously, all Missile launcher or Heavy Bolter Devastors are a safer bet. Missile Dev squads can plug just about any problem in a jiffy with a krak or frag volley. A pure heavy bolter squad is pure murder for infantry of all kinds. But lascannons and plascasters should be off limits. Don't let your expensive devestators touch them.

I wouldn't suggest a lot of lascannons, but keeping at least one in your army to ping some of the heavier armor would be a good idea.

Good choice, especially when the lascannon is superior or identical in every fashion.

You're talking as if I've never played this game before or fought Space Marines. I have an Imperial Guard army, I'm aware of what kills what and what to just avoid.

I keep 2 or 3 in my IG army, depends on how much armor I have to kill and how many monstrous creatures I'm fighting.
