I know what a CD R is and an RW, and a DVD R and RW, but what in the world is the difference between a DVD-R and a DVD+R ?!?!?!?!? (also DVD+RW and DVD-RW, also CD-R and CD+R, and CD-RW and CD+RW)

Whats the difference between DVD+R and DVD-R ?!?!?!

the only difference is that different manufacturers make different types of recordable CDs/DVDs... so instead of just working together on making the same system they just make the readers and recorders work with both.. there is no real difference...

[EDIT] just make sure what your recorder can work with before you buy them.

So a DVD-RW and a DVD+RW are almost exactly the same (my recorder does em all.) so y are there two types then??

The difference is that one can do multi-session and the other can't. It's really irrelevant now, as most DVD burners are DVD ± RW drives. CD-R's could always support multi-session, so there was no + for them.

1) so a CD-R or DVD-R can do multi session, and a CD+R or DVD+R can only record once?
2) if 1 is true, then whats the difference between CD-RW and CD+RW or DVD-RW and DVD+RW?(because RW is always multi session, i think)

I think DVD-RW is one session and DVD+RW is multi-session. For CD-RW's, all are multi-session, so there is no CD+RW.

CDs only have one type, got it

DVDs come in two types, one can do multi session the other cant.

Im confused here:
which of the following are multi session: DVD-R(W) or DVD+R(W)

I never heard about the multi-session thing, so i'm going to take Exedore's word for it. I do know that DVD+R(W)s have a more robust error correction scheme, and that they are not supported by the DVD Forum.

I have thought of a simpler question to ask:

If I am going to buy blank DVDs should I buy:

a) DVD-Rs and DVD-RWS
or
b) DVD+Rs and DVD+RWs

Note: I want the one that is better, and supports multi session.

Hmmm... I don't know which one is more mainstream, in fact, I would guess - would be more widespread... but I might be wrong.
After reading the source, I would really go with +.

UED77oops I didn't see this post. After reading it I have one question: Whats a DVD-RAM ??

(I am now assuming that DVD+R(W) is my best option)

It's a recordable DVD format that is best used for archiving purposes. It's housed in a cartridge and isn't very mainstream.

omfg.

Would buying something like a spindle of 100 CD-Rs or RWs really be THAT bad? I mean it cost like $20.

You can burn to them, and tada! they work! What more do you want? Cds will never act as Floppy Discs where you can just reburn over and over and over again.

Errr... CD RWs are CD Re-writables, which means you can burn them over and over and over. :p

Errr... CD RWs are CD Re-writables, which means you can burn them over and over and over. :pyes, and you can actually get 100 CD-Rs for about 4 bucks (I got them for 4 bucks from an advertised special at compusa)

It's a recordable DVD format that is best used for archiving purposes. It's housed in a cartridge and isn't very mainstream. So basically forget DVD RAM as it isnt something I would want/need. But I should go with DVD+R(W) right?

Forget about DVD-RAM. Go with DVD+R(W) if your drive supports it.

I was actually wrong about the multi-session thing. DVD-R(W) does support multi-session, but does it extremely inefficiently.

Not sure about this, I think it's the + ones, the - ones don't work with some DVD Players (older ones I think, I'm not sure I'll wait till my bro gets home, I'll ask him, he told me one day and now I forget. lol)
