View Full Version : Raynor+ Hair?

Kawagata

I thought somebody would have broughten this up by now. This is too weird. Raynor looks more expierienced with his new hair but is it fake? In SC1 he was bald as i recalle and he had no cheekbones. He was rather chubby also. Why did blizzard decide to give him cheekbones and hair? What the hell is with his new voice also? I prefer his new looks but hate his new voice actor. What do you you guys think?

Edit: Apparently Blizzard ditched and rejected the original guy for the new crap voice. Bring old raynor back!

They said that they are in delima about Robert Clothworty or new voice actor

Maybe he shaved his head back in the day (he was a marine).

I'm rather fond of the new voice actor. I think Raynor looks pretty bad-ass now.

Basan
08-16-2007, 4:08 AM
Bold he was but not "bald". :smirk: He had a bald entrance on top of his forehead, but that was it. Since he's now older, drinks more and probably left his hair grow that's why we don't notice it that much and also why he looks thinner.

SgtHK

Plus, 3d head modelling back in 1998 was really hard to do compared today.

pytum
08-16-2007, 6:41 AM
maybe, cause raynor is no any longer part of the confederacy, he is not obligated anymore about cutting off his hair, and he wants to be a drunk hippie

BlackDefiler
08-16-2007, 6:57 AM
Drunk hippies FTW.
And I don't see why Raynor having hair is such a huge issue. He's been redesigned. So what?

Kellanved
08-16-2007, 8:44 AM
So why didn't he grow hair back when he was with the protoss? I think he was permanent-bald.

I like the old Raynor better. He was just more likeable. He was the guy that confounded you by looking like a very average guy but then ending up having more balls than any badass-looking hero. Having him look badass really defeats that whole thing. Plus it's that old Raynor that we grew attatched to, not this damn movie-star Raynor.

Maybe he kept the buzzcut for old time's sake and then, after the Brood Wars, he gave up on it and just let his hair grow.

DarkLStrike

Well, as SgtHK said, back in the days, 3D softwares didn't let modelers to make breathtakingly accurate and realistic hair, so blizzard didn't make hair for most of their models (some of them don't even have eyebrows!).

Lol, things that people search to complain about.

Maybe he grew tired of his old hair style. Though , i think his new hair almost looks mengsk-like.

AJ
08-16-2007, 12:25 PM
It's just mostly an image thing.. he looks a little more rugged and ready to fight, but also maintains this new image of struggling warrior -- there's a reason one of the locations on the Hyperion is a cantina.

And yeah, as has been said, he wasn't bald in the first SC just had a shaved head, if you look close enough you'd see the dull coloring of buzzed hair, not just scalp. ;)

Kawagata
08-16-2007, 2:16 PM
well he just could be tan. His old look was crappy but i seriously believe he was bald, he had no stubble. Despite the contiuity issue i like his new look but come on, bring the old guy back with a darker tone though.

Hint: in Protoss Mission 10: Eye of the Storm (not exact dialog, just what I can remember):

Raynor: Well, I guess I just have to see this through. The Zerg have taken everything from me: my home, my family, my friends. Now I'm in a far-away end of the universe, surrounded by hostile aliens. I have to do something.
Fenix: Then you shall, bold human, you shall.

Although fenix says "bold" and not "bald", it can be interpretated as an inside joke referring to the fact that it's hard to distinguish whether Raynor is bald, shaved or short-haired.

Just a thought.

Kawagata

but out of around 60 missions he knows that exact one had it or did he search through all of them?

TitanWing
08-16-2007, 9:16 PM
He probably played the mission recently or vaguely remember the line and what mission it was from and went in to get the exact quote. :)

BludSyko
08-16-2007, 9:17 PM
Heh, it's not that hard to remember stuff...

Anyways, that was the first thing I noticed about the new Raynor. In SC1 it looks like he has a buzz cut but was also balding in the front. Of course, it's just crappy graphics :P

TitanWing
08-16-2007, 9:19 PM
Maybe they just liked Raynor with hair more than a bald one?

BludSyko
08-16-2007, 9:51 PM
He does look better but it doesn't make sense. He starts balding, but all of a sudden, he starts growing his hair back? o.O

pytum
08-17-2007, 4:16 AM
that naturally happens... i think he is now like 33 years old...and kerrigan 30...

And even today, hair is one of the most difficult parts of the body to render. Simply adding long silky hair to a female character increases rendering time by about 800% because the computer has to calculate every strand of hair there is, not to mention each strand's shadows T.T

Blizzard just wants to appeal to all these new-generation kids that are all like 'omg teh heroz must be liek hollywood starz or theyre zeroz1111'

Raynor was an average man who rose from the ranks, but nowadays the 'average man' must be about 10x better-looking than an actual average man.

DashRendaer
08-17-2007, 3:23 PM
He kept his old hairstyle when he joined the Protoss because they were using the same model...
They couldn't just make a new versions of their 3D models with every new model, it was 1998! Toy Story(Hail Pixar!) had only been out for three years, and 3D stuff was very hard.

Kawagata
08-17-2007, 7:19 PM
well they managed to give hair to mengsk and stukov so stop using that excuse.

I'm fairly sure that's how it used to be 'usedtahdays'.

BTW, blizz has never showed images of the heros in different situations aside from the sprites and the portraits, all of which remain unchanged (aside from substituting different sprites for heros with the vulture, battlecruiser, and marine for Raynor or tank and battlecruiser with Duke'). So really, you can't canonically say that Raynor didn't decide to grow his hair back.

Additionally, Raynor was a colony marshall, and then a freedom fighter with the SoK; never a full fledged confederate marine. 'Battle Armor' doesn't officially indicate 'marine'.

Kawagata

Yeah but i don't think they cared back then. If they wanted raynor to have hair then he would have gotten it.

This is the future, or an alternate reality really, maybe there is a cure for baldness?

Kawagata
08-21-2007, 10:55 PM
then all middle-aged men wouldn't be so worried about the next 5 years of their lives. Maybe hollywood already has it.

Well, in SC1 he appeared to be "bald," but it could have been shaved, him being initially in the Confederate military as Marshal of Mar Sara and all. So 4 years later, he decides to have longer hair :/
However, who said there wouldn't be hair growth stuff by then assuming he was naturally bald, we do today, like Bosley and whatnot.

Yes, but how does his hair go from a kind of light reddish-brownish to dark brown. And he looks a hell of a lot different. And what the hell is with the Terrans being HUGE!!! They make Arnold Schwarzenegger in the '70s and '80s look small :(

Basan
08-27-2007, 4:06 AM
Stand close to a red light in the dark (or badly illuminated room) and then tell me how your hair looked, assuming that it's brown/black. :P
And how come the Terrans are now "huge"? You now see them in a different perspective, which is a lot closer than in SC-BW (campaign's movies), and they obviously look bigger because of that.

Kawagata
08-27-2007, 6:30 PM
well black is the absence of reflected light. So something black in a red light only room will still be black as it absorbs all visibile colors. However white will become red.

Basan
08-27-2007, 7:41 PM
The hair grease will shine and make it look different. (As in, more similar to those avy's in SC-BW.) Hence my remark.

Hair aside, Raynor looks significantly differently facially.
Also, DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE LOL?!?! People don't come from your average soldier to becoming Arnie uber bodybuilder times 2.

It is the future and im really sure they have wigs, that solves the question.

Maybe the hair plays an important part in the campaign, it can assist in mission, you could get briefings from the "hair" (trying to think of a witty name for the hair). It could turn out as a plot twist that the "hair" (i cant do it) we love and trust, turns out to be some sort of leech and raynor is just the body, the "hair" uses to carry out its dirty work.

Oh crap, blizzards going to come down on me so hard, thats the big plot ending OH NOES....

Okay... let me put any huge bodybuilder times 2... like Dr. Franco Colombo, didn't serve in the army or anything... lol...

But the point is: all the Terrans are HUGE!!! It's like they consume like 10 bottles of steroids every hour if that's possible o.O

Basically, Raynor has had too many cosmetic changes done. He looks better but it's ridiculous. He's in the Hyperion not Beverly Hills. (no offence to those in beverlyhills, i'd actually like to end up there.)

Yeah heh I think the new look of Raynor isn't bad, but for some reason that old Raynor icon still sticks in my head of what he actually should look like. I mean he some how lose weight and got hair? lol... I actually blogged about this very topic here:

sdbolts11

Now this Raynor's build (http://www.starcraft2.com/art.xml?s=35) is much more like a soldier, or any person for that matter, and as Titan said, one who does push-ups on board the Hyperion. What Raynor and his comrades are in the game though is the buffest bodybuilders times 2.

I do prefer the classic Raynor, but the new one isn't that bad. As far as looks go. But as for the voice actor, I don't want the old one to go.

He brought the right sort of mannerism to the part, like something between pessimism/hope/humility. Bringing in a new actor would really mess with the continuity of the character.
