I'm now using Gentoo Linux (http://www.gentoo.org), so I thought that you should know about that :P

Really, I'm asking your opinions on Linux systems. Why? Just curious.

ps. I'd like to use this forum with a text-based browser -friendly style.. but this processes this image-based one pretty well ;)

Have fun:

Relearning everything you once could do in 2 clicks
Relearning things that were once basic knowledge are now impossible...

Troubleshooting internet problems, trying to network, etc...

Oh and also have fun trying to download every open souirce alternative you can find...

:P

I hear the best Linux is the one with the penguin. But I really don't know much about these things. Win98 gogogo!

Don't expect to be able to use a soundcard.

I think you guys are drastically exaggerating the problems that linux has. Sure, it does have some driver problems, and you have to search a bit for programs (and compile them), but a lot of times, it's easier to get utility programs.

As for the conosle interface being slower than a GUI, that's rubbish. I use both, and aside from not knowing a lot of more advanced commands, I can do things faster via a console. Unix permissions are also A LOT easier to understand and use than windows ones.

Really, the only advantage that Windows has over Linux is support for D3D games. D3D is part of Directx, and Microsoft tends to not want it to be cross-platform.

Heh. I was trying to be annoying Exedore ;)

Wasnt trying to be serious ~_~

Actually, I am not to sure on GenToo... My only experiences (limited as they are) revolve around RedHat/Similar I think maybe Lindows to, not sure.

I just dont see any reasons to run linux, since Win2k seems to be fine for me. But then again, when your a geek your computer doesnt usually crash on accident anyways...

Bill Gates was kinda right about users being idiots. If you dont touch a computer I can pretty much garuntee its not gonna error ^^;;

Network is fine, usually Linux systems autodetect hardware pretty well.

And, if I happen to need some software, Portage does the job.

NTFS file permissions in Win 2K and 2K3 are about as straight-forward as it gets IMO. As far as D3D goes, I don't see why anyone would expect MS to develop D3D for Linux. I don't think re-writing D3D for 2-3% of computer users warrants the time or effort.

What do you plan on using the system for?

bump.

right now using (almost) fully functional desktop, only difference to Win-based desktops is the extensive use of shells when doing things.

sounds work, mouse works, localized keyboard works.

should get a windows emulator soon for games =)

What does "BUMP" mean anyway? (I've just resently been going to forums and I see it a lot)

Anyway the only real disadvantage that Linux has is the fact that not many games are compatable with it (UT2004 is though :D), it has many upsides these include: Stability, Security, etc.

P.S. I don't use Linux, but I've had it installed before, the newer one (I think it's call Fedora or something..) is just like Windows as far as menus etc.

There is Wine for most Windows applications, including games. Now, I plan on using that comp as a server and playing WoW with it ;)

WoW???

Yah, most games are being ported, hurray for LINUX (even though I dont' use it, dont' feel like learning yet ANOTHER Computer language... HTML, slight C++, and some UT2004 scripting is enough for me.. for a while anyway ;))

WoW is World of Warcraft. If you don't know it, you can find out at blizzard.com...

I know what World of WarCraft is, I'm just not very excited about it (heard the controls are going to be EXTREMELY confusing, plus I hate paying to play online ;))
