This depends what level of movie making skill you have, and what you're trying to accomplish.
If you're a beginner and haven't worked with video before, I'd recommend starting out with windows movie maker just to learn the very basics of video editing.
For intermediate editing, Pinacle Studio (I dont think its free) is supposed to be good. I've also heard of a program called "Sony Vegas" or something like that which is supposed to be good (again, not free).
If you're looking for advanced, industry level editing you want Adobe Premiere (PC) or Final Cut (Mac). Adobe After Effects is used for special effects and animation.
(PS: If you do have access to a mac, iMovie is the easiest and most convenient home user video editing program available)

I highly reccommend Pinnacle Studio, it's fairly simple and clear-cut to use, but still provides a lot of options.
It's not freeware, but previous versions are pretty cheap; whenever they release a new version, the previous' price goes through the floor.

Macs are great, you just have to know how to use them...they were not made for gaming, but for developing, and they are second to nothing in that field. Especially with the nice 8 core machine that they released last month (I think it was like month). Anyways, it really does depend on what kind of movie you are going to make, I like iMovie just because its easy to use, and is pretty feature rich, but thats just me.

what about flash lite 1.1
has anyone ever used that?
btw.. what should i use to record my games?
not replays, i want to be able to put them into a video editor program.
Fraps (http://www.fraps.com/) works well for that. Or, Taksi (http://taksi.sourceforge.net/) (open source alternative -- free)
And lay off the mac love, I said they were ok, at this point in the game they are no longer the bestest production computer anymore -- in the past when Adobe products ran the best on them that might'be been true, but not so much now.
Uhm, some open source video editors to, not sure how they work but here;

ok, so far i've gotten some pretty good program suggestions.
i also want to know what does flash lite 1.1 do. could anyone help me on that? i heard its a video editing program too.
i think flash lite is for making mobile flash stuff (ie: flash applications/stuff for mobile phones and other mobile devices).

Fraps is the most popular program to record video of games. You'll want to adjust the settings to be at least half size (or lower) and 15-30 FPS (The settings are up to you, but keep in mind fraps will record uncompressed video! That means the files will be HUGE, even for only a few seconds of video).

Yes, if you set it to, Fraps will record audio (keep in mind it will basically record what's coming out of your speakers so if you're playing music in the background that will get recorded)
