Question about LCD screens and polarization.

Okay,

For computer classes i take at school, i've to make a small website with information about LCD screens. I've to answer questions and blah blah.

But i can't seem to find a good source for this: Why do LCD screens need polarization? I know the liquid crystals polarize the light but WHY it is needed goes beyond me.

Anyone knows?

Have you read through any wikipedia topics? I know most places don't like you to use them as a reference, but I've found that its a great starting place to get a general overview over specific topics.
