A few thousand years into the future, nations have inevitably expanded into space, futuristic business enterprises thrive, etc., etc.

But what if humanity had encountered a monstrous enemy; an enemy as terrible as the zerg? This is a realistic look at the situation, guys.

This isn't just a thread to chat about starcraft dudes. It's a look at man's ability to unify under a common, and very apalling threat, if faced with such a necessity. :P

So yah. Discuss.

Basicly the one drive nessacary for a race to survive is to gather resorces. We will need to expand into space to get more. If we encounter any species in close proximity to ourselves, we would need to fight them for resorces.

So basicly, its kill or be killed.

It's a very limited IR topic. Who's to say that a species like "Zerg" that actually exists to consume everything could be capable of reaching us or reaching space. I would also propose that any species that is technologically capable of exploring space is more than likely achieved a higher level of existence, not relying on the "kill or be killed" mentality that is prevalent in our species. I dunno, your question sort of tends to suggest either we would a) unite, fight, and live or b) be divided, lose, and die. Not many options to choose from there.

The fastest speed any matter can travel is light speed, which is 186,000 miles per SECOND. our fastest space shuttle comes no where close to that. lets assume in another 2 to 3 milleniums, we develop a spacecraft that can fly at lightspeed. well, the closest star system that would have habitable planets is 4.3 lightyears away. no one would travel that long, and building a ship to support even a few people for that long would be too costly. it would never happen. we are the only created beings in the universe, and either way, the fact we will never expand to other star systems will be the same for the stupid, irrational theory that there are aliens out there. right now, you should be worrying about our (america's) swiftly worsening relations with the Russian Federation and their 100,000 nukes, almost half of which are capable of the power of several hydrogen bombs, while we cannot even defend against one nuke. so be worried about that, even though the russians are very wise and won't use their nukes unless absolutely needed. DO NOT WORRY ABOUT imaginary "Zerg" that will never come and that we will never meet. if any "zerg" came in their swarms through space, it would be picked up immediately by russian/american satellite telescopes from millions of miles away and when they come in range, thousands of missiles, some nukes, will be sent into space and destroy them. so really, think rationally. it helps. the biggest threat to humanity right now is Kim Jong Il, a good for nothing bastard whos threatening everyone with his 6 or 7 nukes. be worried about that.

and anyways, russia's grip on the far east is so strong, the north korea wont try anything stupid, and some would call the countries russia is especially involved in, in a sense, kind of like colonies. so dont worry about that either. so really, worry about environmental decay, especially in our country, and that a nut doest come to power in russia.

Russian Federation is the official name of what is known as Russia, not the USSR. and dont you watch the news or anything? it even says straight up we're trying to make a nuke defense system for the past 50 years, and nothing has worked, not even now. in 1991, when the soviet union broke up, all the money became like null, so really every nation had to build up. the nation with the most industry/resources/economy was the Russian Federation. By 2003, it made the height of the former Soviet Union, in fact any nation at its height, look like a joke. in 1991, when they had no military or economy and everything was in chaos, we could have crushed them in something like 2 years. few years later, when they restored some military, it was out of the question, and now, its even retarded to thing. anyways, 100k nukes is a lot of firepower. so assuming our "nuclear defense system" could defend against one nuke, why dont they try two xD

that doesnt mean no one will do it though, many people have screwed up through out history for no conceivable reason

We, the united states, have VERY many types of missile defense systems. These include intercept missiles coming from either boats across the atlantic and pacific, coastal bases, even satellites. I've read about that aircraft with the laser defenses. I saw footage of it in action, and it works. It's still in the beta stage, though, because I think they want to implement more than one laser on it. We even have satellites in space with this lazer technology.

These are all effective nuclear missile defenses, but I think they are all obsolete compared to the greatest missile defense: our own nukes. There is no way that someone who begins a nuclear attack will not get his ass nuked back. Politicians aren't stupid. They just purposely make themselves look that way. They aren't going to start a nuclear frenzy (unless you're a religious extremist). Nukes, these days, aren't made to be used, they're made to intimidate.

Back on topic, someone already pointed out that space travel is just so impractical, that if any "force" were to come from the far reaches of space and proved hostile towards the human race, it'd be our galaxy colliding with another.

This was a horrible topic to start, and it merely went downhill from there. Short of a few attempts by more stable members, this was an outright farce. If you seriously wish to consider the chances of mankind against forces such as the Zerg, you're going to have to create a much more credible scenario. Starting off a topic in the IR as "Man vs. Zerg. Ding! Ding!" may mean that you want a good discussion, but are far to inept/lazy/ignorant to do so.
