I could use Fraps in the past to record videos from games, but as of late it no longer works. I have no clue why, but it reduces my framerate down to less then 1 when I use it.

I tried to get alternatives, like HyperCam, but that has lead to a new problem - I tried to record videos on Starcraft (which uses 8-bit paletted graphics) and the results were the same as if you'd try to capture screenshots from it by Ctrl+Ving into a graphic program - colors all messed up.

So, I'd like to know from any experts amongst you, what is a reliable, free, video recording device, that I could use to record gameplay scenes from Starcraft.
Or, if you encountered the problem in the past, how could I make Fraps work again?

Try Taksi (http://taksi.sourceforge.net/)? (Not 100% sure it'll work with starcraft but it's worth a shot.)

Sounds like an issue with your graphics, moreso then with fraps. Have you changed anything recently? (Upgraded video drivers, new card, etc...?)

I know the screenshot issue got me occasionally with Diablo II (though in starcraft, I play with glitchy graphics since its so touchy about background programs).

why do you want to record it like that? what about just normally saving the replay?

if you want to see your actions (and other players), get the wgt launcher. that should work fine.

Can't put replays on YouTube :p

I searched a lot about this eventually and it turned out that my flat monitor is probably the reason for the broken recording. I guess I'll have to settle for no-fraps. :\

or you could do it old-fashioned way: record it with a camcorder xD

Fraps has always worked for me -- there are some tricks you can use to get it to run more smoothly.

First, lower the graphics settings in your game (if you can) to at least half of what they normally are (800x600 or less is fine for video). Next, set Fraps's settings to match that and lower the FPS it records at, as well as the video size it's recording. If you lower the settings enough you should see a drastic improvement in quality.
