View Full Version : Way Cool Diplomacy Project

I talked to Cygnus about this once, and have thought about it quite a bit, but I havn't taken it any farther. What I had in mind would have to do with an Imperial Diplomacy game, if we ever start one that is.

The basic idea is, every player would PM me an outline of their thoughts for each turn: why they did what they did, etc. Obviously, this would prevent me from actually playing, but I think this project would be cool enough to give that up.

I would take all these thoughts from the players from each turn, and out of each turn I would write a chapter in a story based on the game.

I'm not sure exactly about the specifics involved in making sure that the game isn't comprimised by my storytelling, but this is the basic premise. Does that sound cool? Or am I just rambling?

BTW, FYI, IMO, there seems to be a slacking of activity here. It is said that this is just because of exams, and that things will pick up later on. I know from experience that this is not true. GMs should keep up on deadlines that they set for themselves, and so should players. If the games stay idle this long, they are NOT going to revive. Well, I agree with what you said about GM's being lazy bastards ( :p ) but doing an Imperial diplomacy game and writing a background story to each order is going to be very time-consuming process not to mention doing the actual orders for the map.

It seems like a good idea on the whole, writing these stories and all like BF politics, and it is actually a cool idea combining the aspects of Diplomacy and BF Politics into one thing.

Really, I can't find anything wrong besides general human laziness and the usual delimmas of players not wanting to write stories or not sending in orders at all. This point will be your sticking point like all things in the Online Roleplaying Forum.

Clarification on a couple points. First, I would not be making the game. There's a loose starting date for an Imperial game floating around out there somewhere. I would not be the GM.

Second, the players would not have to write stories. Just send me a summary of their thoughts on what they did during the turn and why. These wouldn't have to be too long, just long enough to give me a general idea.

There wouldn't be an entire story for each order, there would be one chapter per turn, each containing a little ditty on the goings on with each player.

But why? Profiling players in order to know their weaknesses ie. what their most likely to do and then, what?

I don't really see the point of this. Is this going to be like a story?

BC: It would just be like the summary except longer and their would be more player-input.

I love the idea but I think many people will refuse to because it could give away their plan (i.e. if they moved to prepare a stab would they go "I moved this way so I can stab ______ in the following turn," though they could just use this as a way to put in misleading information so it could be interesting, you would just have to have a disclaimer informing all players that they will have to send in the summary).

So this is a way to improve the tactics people use and see what other people think about when they make moves?

I guess you could take it as that, although I doubt all players will be truthfull as to what their real intentions are, but you could learn something about the other players from it. But I believe it is also to add some more storytelling to it and maybe give the players a chance to speak out and be a bit more involved then just writing down orders (well more invovled in the actual end-year post that is).

Well maybe to not let any lies be told, we shouldn't count the game? Or maybe we should save all our summaries in a word file and when the game ends, we can send them to TheGreatBrain and we will all have a detailed sumary of why we did each of our moves. Or we could send them to TheGreatBrain each turn, and he would make those summaries but he would not post them until the game is over. Then we could analyze how exactly the person won and if there was a bit of luck involved.

If any of the above doesn't make sense then maybe I am still confused about this idea.

I like the idea, i think we trust you enough that you won't go selling our intentions...

A few weeks later while playing the Imperial Diplo Game Story Variant BH is gandering at Samurai swords on ebay when he accidentaly hit's the "Game" button. Before BH hit's the "Stop" button he notices something "WB Diplo Cheats". He enters and realizes they are Maegtelluma's plans for the following year. *Typing* *Click* *Click* *Click* and done, BH is now the owner of Maegtelluma's plan and goes on to pwn Maeg in the following year, with a nice "GGnore" before landing the final blow.

I think some of you have misunderstood me. This would be something for Creative Concepts. It would be a work of fiction based on what happened in the game.

Ah. So it would all be collected after the game is finished and written up into a story?

Maegtelluma

That would be cool...it would take some time to make, though. If you want to do that, i'll help you out, just make sure you don't sell me out to BH :P

Sounds really good to me. I'll be the one starting the Imperial game later this summer. Tenatively, I'm planning for around July 25th. That is after the last of my major summer activities and my other game should be nearing end by then.

OK, i'd like to be in that game. Are you taking advance sign-ups? Or will there be restrictions? *shiver*. I don't want to miss out on imperial. Even though there are like thirteen spots...lol

The game will be open when it is posted, but there will be no advance joining allowed.
