What are hyper triggers?
What do switches actually do and when would I need to use them?

Hyper triggers are used for speeding up the map. Like you have a trigger that says: Always - Wait for 0 Seconds (63 Of the Wait) and Preserve Trigger. Then you copy the whole trigger two times and you have a low-level hypertrigger. What it essentially does is keep the starcraft game looking for the triggers and it makes it so that the triggers run a lot faster.
As for switches: they can be used to do stuff like in Random Control and Random Defense where you get a random thing by randomizing the switches. Also you could use them just for keeping track of something being done: like after you get to a certain location then Switch 1 gets set, and after getting to another place if Switch 1 is set, you win. Or you could use it for something else like that.

Switches act like a light, there are only two settings, and no matter what you do to them, it is only 'set' (which is the on position on a light) and 'clear' (off position). The switch will ALWAYS start in the clear position when a map is started. Keep that in mind. You can set where it can cause things that happen if it is set or clear, they can be really useful for some advanced triggering tactics. Usually, for simple things, a regular trigger will do just fine.
We also a have Mapping FAQ (http://www.warboards.org/showthread.php?t=13285) that might be of aid to ya, Fundo'. :)
And welcome onto the SC dar *Errm* mapping side of WB's, btw. ;)
