As it stands right now, I have a sizable Imperial Guard army, a small Space Marine army, 10 Necron Warriors, a Chaos Lord, and Cypher, Fallen Angel. I'm looking to expand into Tyranids, having read their codex and being quite taken with the army. So, I'm here to ask y'all what you think of the Tyranids. Keep in mind I want the Tyranids because I'm looking for a powerful close-combat army. If I want something shooty, I've got the Imperial Guard for that. What's a good price for a Tyranid army? What is the composition of a decent Tyranid force? What tactics do you recommend for a Tyranid army? Thanks to all that answer, and I'll give rep to the first person who gives me decent information as added incentive.

Reading the codex- nids look pretty fun, all I can say is go for it.
I'd also like to point out that this thread can be compared to Jesus asking people about Christianity.

I'd compare it more to Jesus asking people about mormonism, he gets the general idea of the thing, but there are just a few quirks about it that he doesnt quite know the subtleties of.

'nid cannon fodder is really fast, and typically outrun the control of synapse creatures. This can be easily(albeit pointwise expensivly) remedied by using the wings biomorph for your warriors/hive tyrants, which will let you let your troops run to their hearts content. Its worth the extra points, because letting your troops out of synapse is a hassle. Also, I'd suggest outfitting your Hive tyrant/warriors with venom cannons(as expensive as they are) so that they aren't directly on the front line, but still controlling the troops on the front line... but what do I know about nids... not much.

Wings for hive tyrant is good & don't give a carnifex both C/C and long range, its a waste of points, focus on 1. Aside from that I don't know much.

Do you two have the same version of the codex I do, I think mine is a little dated.

What's the front cover like? Is the border the same as the current Marine Codex, or does it have a 'tyranid' looking border?

Overall, form what I here, Close Combat Carnifexes (unless you are doing a 'nidzilla list) are a no-go, which is a shame, because, IMO, tyranid guns look horrible. People tend to just avoid CArnifexes, since they are too slow to get inot the game early enough.

Of course, I've never tried this. I suppose the theory is that you tie down the enemy with Gaunts while the Canirfexes lumber in.

Lictors, although hard to use, can be very useful if deployed correctly and can wreak a lot of havoc amongst enemy gun lines.

Or you could just give synapse nodes or whatever they are called to your bread and butter units (GAUNTS!!!!onez!). Also, it is important to remember that any Tyranid within synapse range (including the synapse creature itself) is immune to Instant Death! effects, which is particularly nasty.

If you are going Hormagaunts, I would recommend toxin sacs for the all the broods, they can really tear the heart of basic Marines with those with some good close support from Warriors.

I bought a group of Hormagaunts earlier today and I finished cementing them together a couple hours ago. I am lacking paint for the fleshy parts, but otherwise, I love how these models look. Very fearsome.

So, you have 1,000pts to spend how you will on a Tyranid army. Post what units and upgrades you'd buy.

You can't do that anymore, it's the old codex. You need specific synapse creatures, such as Warriors, Zoanthropes, Tyrants or Broodlords, etc.

Well, goes to show how much of the new Tyranid codex I've read through.
