Cicadas are showing up again this year. Those little buggers have been buried for so long and now they want to come out and have a little fun before they go back underground.
They are showing up in my part of the USA this year. The Mid West. For those who ain familiar with them, here's a little info:
http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2004/03/0329_040329_cicadas.html

For those wo are in the Mid West: Beware!
For those who arn't: You lucky bastards.

Note: The report says East, but their gonna hit the Mid West as well. Anyway, enjoy the Month of June.

Now imagine if those cicadas were actually cicadas from Unreal Tournament 2004.

Ugh, I accidently dug up one once. Its eyes were so white, that I couldn't stand to eat vanilla ice cream for a long time. Not that I actually like vanilla, but y'know. Nasty cicadas.

Coincidentally, I read about a group that plans to capture a good, healthy number of cicadas during this year's emergence and then, of all things, eat them. They want to know what they taste like, but current sources suggest anything from shrimp to no taste at all, so only a little experimentation can give us the answer!

Brood XIII...can't say it's the greatest name, but it'll do in a pinch. At least they aren't zerglings.

Never heard of them :o. Sounds cool though, how they come up once every 17 years and the rest of the time they're buried away.

?? :oWhat kind of a thought process would lead to that ?

Imagined conversation:
Person 1: "Hey you know, billions and billions of bugs shall be coming up from the ground this year. It's a once in 17 year event! Man, they'll cover nearly everything, cars, plants, trees.. you name it!!"

Person 2:".. yeah yeah yea... got any ketchup ?"

O shi- Cicadas. I did a math word problem on them once. Cicadas are funny, they leave cool little shells on the trees and stuff when they do that molt thing or w/e. And they make that weird noise.

Oh my god, I hate cicadas. So creepy and disgusting. They're everywhere in the North East.

I've heard they taste wonderful with penut butter, Havn't gotten around to trying yet though. We don't get the swarms here like they do in other places, but occaisionally you'll find a husk here or there.

Yeah, got some crazy people 'round here who love to eat them... I never understood it.

From my understanding, they can be poisonous to dogs/other domesticated animals, at least i think.

I don't mind them to much, their noise is part of my childhood // summer memories, however I get freaked out over ANY sort of bugs ANYWHERE.

They are just creepy, and I dislike them intently.

I'll eat one if I find one... but that won't be very likely. I'll give you guys pictures if you want, and I'll probably boil it first.

I saw about three when I walked home from school yesterday.

If Cicade's were zerglings, we would be pretty fucked.

I've always liked bugs, but critters like cicadas give me the heebie-jeebies, The sound they make is really annoying though, especially if you're trying to film anything, because it gets excruciatingly loud before they shut up.

Speaking of their frustrating loudness, there's a music fest somewhere up in the area where this brood will be emerging. I can't recall exactly which city it's in off the top of my head, but they adjusted the order of their acts so that orchestral groups wouldn't have to compete with the bugs. But I did find it a bit humorous that the Mormon Tabernacle Choir wasn't moved...I guess a few hundred singers can hold their own against some bug mating calls. ^_^

Doing some research it appears I was wrong, they don't taste good with peanut butter, they taste like it. They supposedly taste like nuts and/or the crispy part on the edge of a fried egg white. They're cooked in many different ways, sauteed with garlic and onions(if you can stand the smell) You're supposed to remove the legs and the wings, but I'd also suggest removing the head if at all possible. More recipes if you want.

Eating them wrong is not a good idea

Yea, they were annoying when I lived in South Carolina, WE HAD LIKE 1000000000000000. (my dad was in the air force so we moved all over)
Oh, here is an interresting story. My dad was making a table for us with a chainsaw---don't visualize that you might have nightmares:o---and these little buggers kept landing on him. It turns out they were in love with the fricken chainsaw it was funny as hell to watch my dad squirm, lol.
Ps. To those of you who don't know, cicadas buzz really loud at times.

Ha! I beat you in posting this!!

OMG, lol from that post it is so true, lol. They were so annoying, and there would be thousands in trees, just buzzing. Damn, you could almost feel an earthquake, there were so many.

Do you know how much money it would be for that many bullets?
Duddits, Back me up here. It would take a long time too. I dont think you have seen the trees they make orange, that's how many.:P
The flame thrower idea was better; although the tree casualties would be numerous, lol.

Hope I can at least see a huge swarm at least once.
Haven't heard them either.
The ones we put on our tree though managed to live and are now somewhere in the feild attempting to mate.
