I am having trouble sleeping lately.

Anyone have anything that might help me sleep better.

have you tried any sleep pills? Although, they DO still have a dangerous addiction, google says >_>. Well, they can.

There are probably better ways than diving into sleeping pills

You really want to speak to a doctor first though, they are more qualified than about 99% of the people on this forum when it comes to such things.

Of course...just step into this darkened alley and we'll give you a nice selection of products to choose from...

Here are some pointers for sleeping better that will hopefully help.

If you are in bed without falling asleep for more than 20-30 minutes, you probably weren't ready for sleep, so it could be helpful to get out of bed and do something until you feel tired.
Don't do things like read, eat, or lounge in bed. You want your body to be accustomed to sleeping in bed, not doing some myriad of other things. (Hence the "get out of bed" in the previous tip.)
If you miss out on a lot of sleep one night, take a nap if you need to, but don't nap longer than an hour. 30 minutes to an hour is just about the right length for a nap to refresh without going into deep sleep.
If you're sleep deprived, try to avoid breaking your normal sleep patterns, even if it means you get a little less sleep overall. If you can continually lay down and wake up at near the same times, without napping too much during the day, your body will more easily adjust to sleep during those times.

You do have to be careful about when you go to sleep and when you wake up. That's probably the one thing that has hindered me the most in the last few months. My current sleep pattern dictates that I go to bed sometime between 2 and 3 AM, then sleep to some time between 11 AM and noon. I get the recommended amount of sleep, if not more, but it isn't the best time for sleeping. But if you choose good times for sleep and waking, follow them consistently, and also follow some of those other tips when you can't sleep, it shouldn't be too difficult to get to sleep. It might take a week or two, though.

If you're still having trouble getting to sleep after adopting a regular pattern for a couple of weeks, you might have some sleep disorder that requires medical attention. And that would be completely outside my range of knowledge, so I'll quit talking before I give any really bad advice.

:shiftyl::shiftyr: I have the perfect thing ... try ...
decreasing your coffee intake/ caffiene. try going to bed earlier. And you should still see a doctor. Sounds like mild insomnia.

Excepting Modred's advice, all he's going to get is 'take sleeping pills111!!!1one111!' from most people. that's not good advice.

Also, you're quick diagnoses with so few listed symptoms makes me question your medical knowledge.

Not all sleep aid have addictive properties, they just have other nasty side effects if taken in excess. For instance, using NyQuil as a sleep aid for long periods of time will mess with your urinary tract and such.
Personally, I keep a bottle of Diphenhydramine (25mg) around for the odd night where sleep isn't coming as quickly as it should or if I need to get to sleep early to wake up earlier than usual; as far as I know, the only side effect of using that as a sleep aid is not having the sniffles (it's an antihistamine) and it's completely non-addictive, although taking more than 50mg of it is not recommended for health concerns.

the sleep aid I'm taking is called Meltonin. It helps to tire me out, but doesn't work 100% of the time. I'm looking for something stronger or at least works a real lot.
Can someone shoot a tranquilzer in me please?

No, no tranquilizers.
Read. Read until you sleep. Don't read books with large fonts, read the extra small ones. It would help even more if it was written by Homer (i.e. Odyssey). If that doesn't help, do something boring to tire your eyes out.

Am I the only one who has trouble doing this? Sometimes it works, but other times it just makes my eyes tired but nothing else. So I can lay down and close my eyes and not feel like opening them again, but I'm still awake mentally and simply toss and turn.

"If you are in bed without falling asleep for more than 20-30 minutes..."
I have never fallen asleep faster than 20 minutes unless totally exhausted- that's just how it has always been. My mother falls asleep in less than 5, but my father is similar to me.

I would suggest getting more excercise during the day and eating a better at dinner, restricting things with high amounts of sugar. Also, I have gotten into the habit of listening to soft music while falling asleep- it keeps my mind from wandering too much and I turn it off once I realize I'm getting drowsy and not listening anymore.
If I cant fall asleep, here's what I do
- I sometimes get up and do something relaxing on the computer like creating something in Photoshop
-take a hot shower,
-read a comic book that doesn't require much thought.
-Sometimes where I'm sleeping just gets uncomfortable, so I go out on the couch or lay on the floor where it's cool.
-I get up and move around a bit, stretch, walk to get water or something small to eat

Do not exercise before bed! Your mind and body will become too active for you to sleep. So far most of the common remedies have already been listed. They are all very good ideas too.

Here are some more,
- Have a bath and add in some lavender or eucalyptus. Make the water very hot and it should relax you enough to make you tired.
- Don't try and fall asleep. If you keep thinking about it, your mind will not shut off.
- Try listening to music that is designed especially for sleeping.
- There are some types of tea like sleepy tea which will help you fall asleep. If you're not interested in tea, hot water and lemon is good too.
- During the day, make sure not to have too much sugar. Also be sure you don't eat after 8pm. Extra energy isn't what you need if you're falling asleep in a few hours.

That is all I can think of right now.

To be honest, I wouldn't recommend consuming any sort of pill unless someone qualified tells you to. You'll end up becoming addicted to sleeping pills, so you'll be forced into continually taking them forever.

And seriously - do you really want some chemical substance unnecessarily messing with your mind? :shiftyr:

I recommend doing some exercise, and eat sufficient "good" food during the day (so your body is physically tired). If you still can't sleep, read something moderately (at least) boring until your eyes feel tired.

Nah.
I always end up hearing a shotgun round go off in my head when I count sheep.
I found that movies help alot. I just pop in a movie in the VCR and I can fall asleep in miuntes. Only prob is if I wake up in the middle of the night, I am never able to tell if I stayed up the whole night.

No clue why, but you do get sleepy after you finish. So I guess it works. provided you don't mind sleeping in your own juices...

Actually, this one thing works for me sometimes. Get a mp3 or something full of your favorite songs. Just keep listening to them and when you get kinda tired, say to yourself ONE MORE SONG!!!!!11eleven.

Well, it works >_>

Well if you like coffee this is what I did last year when I had the same problem. I drank massive ammounts of caffeine and now it no longer has the keep you awake until ungodly hours of the night properties. In fact its the vice versa I drink a cup of coffee it still heightens awareness but it also makes me rather tired. However if you decide to take the route I took make sure you go off the caffeine slowly and steadily otherwise you will want ot kill yourself in lou of the headaches

I like lists, so here we go.
1. Don't take any pills based on ANY of our advice here, we are stupid.
2. Chibi, depending what kind of workout he does it can help him go to sleep. I'd say a short 15-20 minute jog about an hour or two before you go to bed and right before you go to bed do some yoga. It provides very little physical strain, and requires very little energy but it can help relax your muscles
3. I'm better than other people.
4. Cut out your caffeine about 4 hours before you go to bed, unless you had ADD/ADHD and a caffeine addiction. Then just have a coke or somethin' about an hour before you go to bed, I've noticed it helps me relax, but you'd need to try and break the addiction because it'll screw you over in the long run.
5. If you have a radio set it to an FM station that is nothing but static, turn the volume down so you can barely hear it, I've heard that has a relaxing effect
6. Try and get the room to be as dark as possible, if your alarm clock has can be dimmed, dim it.

TMI. The juices part. At least lie on a towel or something so you can toss the towel out of your bed when you're done. Yeesh.

QFT. Also its relaxing because your brain releases chemicals that relax you.
