is making me mad. I'm just going to copy and paste the post i put...somewhere else.

Adware...
I'm getting it all the time. And i use Norton 2004 and Ad-aware to kill it. (I'm running Spybot S&D as we speak...) Only, when Norton finishes, i check them all and click delete. Then they all show up again, and it says "click to exclude the files from future scans." I figured that wasn't what i wanted, clicked Skip. Then it says all the files are still there and weren't deleted. What's up with that?

I'd like to know what's wrong here. My LiveUpdate sub. ended last week, but that should have no effect on the program, just the updates. (Don't worry, i'm going to renew, it caught something just last night). This is just pissing me off, because i see on the list Incredifind, which basically forces me to type in the URL with the www and all that, which i sometimes don't do, or else i go to some stupid search engine. What can i do here?
Do i click to exclude them? Under "status" it says Delete f..... but you cant read the rest, and the window won't maximize for whatever reason, and it won't go bigger. Help!

Thanks,
Maegtelluma

edit: after some thought.. the delete f.... is probably delete failed. Only it happened to all of them? Any idea how to remedy this? Or the above if its not "failed"

Hmm...the delete file usually works with me on Ad-Aware...see if you can note down the path and delete them manually

It isn't ad-aware thats not deleting, adaware isn't finding these files at all, unless i've picked them up since this morning. I'll try manually deleting. Any other ideas, people?

Spybot brought up a lot of stuff called BackWeb Lite. It says comes with HP, and i have one, what's the deal with that? Do i want it gone or not?

Yeah, Norton doesn't do jack all. It pretty much detects it and says, "What now? Let's delete it and have it come back!"

If you really want them to be gone, you will have to download something like "HiJack This" and find everything that doesnt' belong. Then you have to delete it all.

You are correct to say that the delete failed. I have had a similar problem. If you can find out where the file is located, manual deletion is a good way to go. However, many adware files are protected against this. But if you know what program it is from, you can uninstal the program using the Add/Remove Programs option from the Control Panel. If you want to keep the programs that have the adware, then you are stuck with the adware.

ok, i'll look into it. I'm really supposed to be studying, i'll look into this later. I hate adware.

The paths are masked. Almost all of them are in local settings, but it doesn't show up through my computer. I'll look into this later....it only seems to effect internet browsing.

Make sure that you're running Norton in an admisnistrator level account. Also try running it in Safe mode. Sometimes windows will prevent Norton from deleting certain files and registry settings when running in normal mode.

is Hijack This a pay program? I just downloaded it, or so I thought, but to delete the stuff they're going to charge me $30. Do I have the wrong thing?

That's not HijackThis. HijackThis is a freeware. I use it all the time. Download from Merijn's page.

I think Exedore has a good idea of running the scans and deletions in Safe Mode. Because the files may currently be in use (in Normal Mode) and therefore cannot be deleted.

We only have one account on our computer- shouldn't that already be making it run as admin?
And how do i run it in safe mode? It wasn't an option that i saw right off.

Thanks for your help so far guys.

Safe Mode:

Turn your comp OFF
Turn your comp ON
Wait until you see a blinking line (MS-DOS cursor) in the top-left corner of the screen
Press the key F8 as soon as you see it. It might not work sometimes, you only have a second to press it.
Hopefully, a windows startup menu will come up. The first option is safe mode. Then windows will load in safe mode.
Log in as administrator (icon: karate guy)
Read all dialogue boxes that pop up, make sure you DO NOT choose system restore...

I recommend Hijack This. (Note: if you do a google search, do a search on "Hijack This" and Merijn's site is the first on that comes up). I've used it to remove trojan's from my friends' computers at college in about 10 minutes (including restarts and verification of removal) after they had been running various anti-virus programs for hours with no sucess. If you need any help with it, just post the log here, or PM it to me if you don't want to post it publicly.
