View Full Version : Modred's Diplomacy Invitational

Modred

Game: Modred's Diplomacy Invitational
Map: Loeb9
Rules: DIAS, Coastal_Convoy, No_Retreat, Weak_Bounce
Start Date: June 12, 2004
End Date: --

Game Info:
Yes, after over a month and half of behind the scenes preparation, the first Invitational to grace WarBoards has finally come around to starting. The rules are a bit kooky, and the map a bit different, but I'm hoping for a good game from all. I would say a clean game...but some of the rules simply prevent that from being possible.

For those not in the game, I will explain the rules briefly.
DIAS (Draw Includes All Survivors) - If a game is to end in a draw, the vote must be unanimous.
Coastal_Convoy - Fleets on a coastal province may convoy an army to any adjacent coastal province (but not a landlocked province).
No_Retreat - There is no retreat phase, dislodged units are automatically disbanded.
Weak_Bounce - A unit that attempts an attack and fails has used its available power and thus has no defense to protect itself from a nother direction, allowing it to be dislodged by an unsupported attack. Example:

Russian A Sev-Rum (failed, dislodged)
Turkish F Bla-Sev
Turkish A Rum H

This occurs because A Rum held, thus allowing it to defend any attack. However, A Sev spent its strength in its attack and was easily defeated by the attacking F Bla. In combination with No_Retreat, carefully planned attacks such as this can devestate an enemy in the fall.

Well, this certainly is going to be a doozy of a game.

I'm just wondering what happened to the other players. I mean, I know Cygnus left, but Shinigami is back. Hmm... oh well. This is going to be a steep learning curve with these rules. :)

BTW, what is wrong with the purple colour there? It has a lot of lines in it, same with some parts of Russia.

Wow, I just looked at the map, too. This is going to be one aggressive map, there are almost no open SCs.

Maegtelluma
06-12-2004, 3:44 PM
I'll take the spot.

Yeah, Loeb9 doesn't have a lot of open Sc's. Most of them are only really accessible by Russia/Austria/Turkey, maybe Italy. Should be interesting.

Modred

Alright Maegtelluma, you are in. I think you have well grounded enough in the normal rules to try this out.

PMs have been sent to participants (except you maeg, since you just joined and know that it is starting).

Orders due by 10 PM EST on Monday June 14, 2004.

Oi, I've been planning orders and have just begun to see the intricacies of these rules. Hmm.

A few questions:

1. Are we allowed to move into the Arctic Ocean?
2. If we are, can fleets move there or armies? Or fleets in spring and armies in winter?
3. Are you going to fix up my colour?

Modred

Greetings fellow Diplomats and welcome to the European Summit at Rome.

I have invited you all here today for the purpose of discussion of treaties and military tactics, and hope that I shall be of close comradeship with all of you. As of now, I have extended offers of peace through non-agression pacts to the nations of France, Germany, and Austria. In the event that war should be declared by any of these, I currently must resign myself to neutrality, however circumstances may change later in the game and I would be proud to serve with any nation against a common foe.

May your victories be swift and death rain upon your opponents.

-Modred
Italian Premier and Host of the European Summit at Rome

Oi, I've been planning orders and have just begun to see the intricacies of these rules. Hmm.

A few questions:

1. Are we allowed to move into the Arctic Ocean?
2. If we are, can fleets move there or armies? Or fleets in spring and armies in winter?
3. Are you going to fix up my colour?

Sorry for double post if no one posted since my last post.

Fleets may move into the Arctic Ocean during the spring, however the ocean freezes in the fall. Thus the fleet may only move out the next spring. Armies cannot move into the arctic ocean.

Are you referring to the light blue lines inside both Norway and Russia? Those are simply little waterways and lakes and such. If you are referring to other lines, then check your display settings.

Hola, y día bueno my fellow leaders. I am glad to be here at the European summit with you all, and I thank Modred, the host, for the invitation. The Spanish people would like to extend alliances to the great countries of Italy, Britain, and Norway. We would also like to extend an NAP agreement to the French.

I hope the other countries will take no offence to be left out of my speech, but frankly you are to far east for me to really say anything to you except good luck. I would like to wish all the countries a prosperous future.

~ BH, Spaniard King.

OK, I didn't know. I just don't see them on ever/post.

The Austrian delegation would like to speak with German and Russian delegates on an alliance proposal with the Austrian Kingdom.

NAP accepted Italian Premier Modred. If we could agree for the Italian army in Ven to move to Pie, the Austrian fleet in Tri shall move to Alb.

Alright, I just need orders from Nivek and TheGreatBrain.

I gave Nivek and Orodreth an extra day (since they apparently hadn't checked their PMs) and will extend this to Brain as well. If either Nivek or Brain is still late tomorrow, one or both will be replaced. Nivek has been alerted to get his orders in, but Brain has not been online, so I don't know if he is even aware of the game starting. Nevertheless, if he does not get online, I cannot inform him, and he will be replaced.

Not surprising, especially since there's one country *cough*Austria*cough* that is in a horrible position to start out with, and there are others who don't have much room to work with. Sitting on your hands early on is just asking for death.

En addendum: I have reviewed your circumstances, and would still prefer that you get those orders in by tomorrow. As you said, you can use the library. I will be generous with my time, and will be waiting on BH (and apparently you as well) for around a week. I would prefer however, to be waiting on Orders, and not Builds.

Also, you don't need a new comp just because a cooling fan broke. They aren't that expensive. Find a store that sells computer parts...there should be several in your area and most will install any hardware that you buy. Although, if you need a new computer anyway, don't let me stop you. :p

If an army fails in its attack even thought it was supported, does that mean A Serbia has expended its strength?

Yes. The support was to Bulgaria, so if a foreign unit (other than Bulgaria) had attacked Serbia, it would have been overcome. However, since it was not attacked, it is still in play and may be used.

Alright, I only need OboeGuru. I will be away from home from tomorrow (Sunday) through Friday afternoon. I would prefer to get the adjustment map up so that you all can prepare your movement rather than sit around waiting.

I will have computer access, only it will be on public computers that I have to wait in line to use, so no time to make maps while I am gone. :(

EDIT 2: Or do you combine the retreat with the next turn?

What the deuce?! Why didn't you say you were looking for a replacement for this turn?! This changes everything; I demand that either time be allotted to reform all plans or that Cygnus begin acting as replacement NEXT turn.

EDIT: BTW, Cyggie, there is no retreat phase. ;) :P

The Prime Minister of Italy sends his congratulations to Berlin, as he now sees that it is impossible for any other power on the map to win in light of a recent communique with the leaders of a few other nations.

As the leaders of Europe are no doubt aware, the nations of Italy and Turkey were long allied in the struggle to control the Balkan region. After the successful Italian attack on Trieste, the plan had been established for this alliance to quickly finish off the resisiliant Austrians and proceed to create a solid defense against the already looming German presence. Crushing both Russia and Norway, and then attacking his allies from those crusades, the German military became a threat that must be dealt with harshly or else the sheer power of said forces would overrun the continent while the collective leaders of Europe were distracted by their own petty differences.

Luckily, the Spanish were vigilant enough to see this as well, however a lengthy and fruitless war against the Britains wasted precious time as Germany spread across the former English and Turkish territories in Russia and Scandinavia. As the situation began to look grim, the leader of Turkey offered an opportunity to hand over a certain amount of his supply center in hopes that the extra power given to my nation would help to stall off the German advances.

Unfortunately for this plan, a dissident faction within the Turkish government removed the Grand Turk and a new leader ascended to the throne. At this time, the Italian units were already in the Turkish territories, however the new leader did not request that Italy withdraw. A logical argument as to his adequacy to defend against the Germans himself would have been ample to convince the Prime Minister to withdraw his forces, as the only reason they ever moved into the Easter Medditerranean was due to a Turkish plan.

No such explanation or request ever came. Instead, the Turkish military foolishly attempted to destroy the Italian fleets that had sailed into the port of Smyrna and supported the an Austrian move against it's ally, Italy. Rather than use his great tact and logic to come to an end, the new leader of Turkey allowed the larger threat, being Germany, to advance into Turkish territory into a position that will cause Turkey more harm than if the Italian units had been requested to withdraw.

Believing that perhaps this new government would listen to reason, I sent correspondence requesting a peace between our nations for the purpose of stalemating the ever advancing Germans. In response, this ally responded that his interests were to "preserve Turkey," which involves, no not negotiation, but misguided force that is counterproductive to the very aim of preserving Turkey.

The conclusion is this:
Germany and Spain are will soon be locked into quagmire, as Germany slowly gains the advantage on the seas against England. Meanwhile, as Turkey and Austria fight against Italy, Germany will be forced to attack those nations in order to reach the requried victory conditions as extracting those supplies from Spanish conquered France would take far too long. In effect, a draw would now be possible if only one nation, Turkey, would agree; however this nation's leader is selfish and is not concerned with his survival, but rather a misplaced pride that blinds his judgment and prevents him from seeing that Italy was his ally and Germany is positioning for attack. Under his reason, it is less important to save Europe than it is to squabble over lands that were granted to the Italians. Negotiation is useless! He thinks only of force, and knowing he can repel Italy, he strives for nothing else.

The arrogance of this leader has doomed all of Europe. I pray you find comfort in this knowledge.

Forgive me for butting in on this dramatic speech, but a draw is NOT possible under the current conditions. There are no two single powers that wield 2/3 control, nor three powers that wield 3/4 control.

Turkey, I recommend that you begin talks with me to avoid unnecessary conflict, I have no desire to squlch a potential ally, but be aware that your first communiqué did not inspire any sympathetic relations, and discontinued contact will only further that assessment.

Germany wishes to stress the importance of communication between (potential) allies and iteslf to ensure cooperation and success.

*Somewhere in a bomb shelter deep in the capitol of Austria, a radio transmission is sent to the leaders of Europe*

"The Italians will burn for their betrayal against us! Germany and Turkey are the true allies of Austria and will see your end come to life! Death to Italy! Victory for all!"

That is generally the second best option to victory. :D

Draw must include all survivors, which means that we would either continue in stalemate forever or you would eventually give up on your conquests and accept the draw. That is simply how it works.

Turkey, I recommend that you begin talks with me to avoid unnecessary conflict, I have no desire to squlch a potential ally, but be aware that your first communiqué did not inspire any sympathetic relations, and discontinued contact will only further that assessment.
To my Turkish counterpart, I hold this up as evidence. Veiled though it may be, this is little more than a threat. An attempt to coerce you into submission. A warning that if you do not perform a certain action, he might find you at the wrong tip of his sword. I can do nothing to stop you from your current course of action, however we could have both benefited if we had more communication before this turn rather than resorting to warfare.

I am always willing to put aside my grievances against another ruler and join together with him for the greater good. Do not inhibit yourself and those who could save us.

"The Italians will burn for their betrayal against us! Germany and Turkey are the true allies of Austria and will see your end come to life! Death to Italy! Victory for all!"
Considering that Turkey supported the Italian attack into Serbia, and then supported the Austrian attempt to retake Serbia, how can you be sure of who is on your side? A fickle ally is a dangerous ally. Is he any more trustworthy than I? You yourself have seen how Turkey promised Italy a certain amount of builds, and then attempted to deny them. Will you allow yourself to be played upon as a pawn? Stand up for yourself, prove that you are the great leader of the dual-kingdom.

You even have a chance to regain your lost position, the only one who could stop you is Germany, but I wouldn't fear him, as he is the only local power who has not invaded you. He really has no reason to invade you, I mean, he only needs a minor amount of SCs to reach victory, he can surely get there without taking your lands.

I have builds from Sub. I require them from TheBB and Oboe.

Need it be reminded that the Turkey that supported Italy was a radical that was duly put out of power in favor of the now-sensible leadership? 'nuff said.

Gah, forgot about that one. You know I'll never agree.
So you would go though years upon years of stalemate rather than give up on your solo victory?

Now you can all see his true motives.

Of course, we all want to win, but it is obvious that Germany cannot win without stabbing someone, or else defeating England and Spain at once. If you wish to hand yourself over to him, so be it. I've still got a few tricks up my sleeve to make your lives miserable, or hopefully at least draw a laugh. ;)
