I want to buy a X-Box 360 for myself, but as i was researching the price online, i realized that i would have to squeeze my budget in in order to pay for the console.
Why i want a 360:
I was playing KOTOR 2 at a friends house and i happened to mention how fun the game was. Another friend said that i could borrow the game (since the person that had it, thought it was boring) and that he could also give me his old X-Box because he had a 360. I myself, never got into the X-Box fad, so i thought "Meh, play it for a while, then sell it." Unfortunately, that didn't happen as i now have "X-Box mania." and i'm setting my eyes on the 360 and its great games.
The main driving force behind this is perhaps the games that are available. Sure i can buy KOTOR 2 for my PC, but its just not the same. I want to play Dead Rising, but i'm unsure if the game will ever be released to PC, and i'm not going to wait for any release news for the PC. And Halo 2 will be on the PC by the time Halo 3 is on the X-Box. Not to mention, almost every friend i know has the 360, or is planning to get the 360, so i would be left out on the miracles of gaming.
My Plan and Budget:
I am NOT going to buy the 'Biggie Pack" because it is too expensive. 400 dollars, and the only thing that will appeal to me is the 20GB hard drive and wireless controllers. And i would be spending nearly half a grand total, including games to play on, so that is a no no.
I am planning to buy the Core System for 300 dollars, then either by the 512MB memory card or something smaller, and a game (most likely Dead Rising). But counting my available cash money and change, i would be twenty dollars short, and although there is a tempting pile of 600 dollars lying right next to me, i can't take any of that because it is Grocery money for me and my dad.
So this has me wondering, is it really worth it for me to spend nearly half a grand for the 360? I want it, but its not something i really need. I have a beaten up X-Box and a nice PC, but...
So what do you think? Should i shoot for the moon or just clean the astronauts toilets?
Do what id do, start pooling money. Then when the "elite" version comes out get that, its prolly the best choice of the three.
Also before u jump into it, look at all the Exclusive franchises the Xbox has like halo for example. If that plays the games u like go for it but wait for the "elite" version, unless money is a bigger issue.

If you're retarded you'll buy the Elite. All it is is a pointlessly large hard-drive and a new HD cable.

Not a new HD Cable, it comes with the HD DVD Drive (instead of the current non-HD DVD reader), and the 120 GB HD, which really isnt pointless....my 20 GB is filled up with Game Maps (over 4 GB of maps that I bought), 2 GB of Movies, and ALOT of Arcade Games. So, it depends on how you use it, but for many the Elite will be a good buy (you save ALOT of money, if you dont already have a 360).

True. That's why I'm probably going to get the Elite in the summer. Money really isn't an issue. Rather, I need to convince my parents to get it for me. I have a HD LCD TV so the HDMI cables would be good. But I don't think I would use all those Gbs. On my iPod, for example, I have only used like 1 Gb out of 30 Gbs and I've had my iPod for about 5 months now. Can you sell the 120 GB harddrive to someone who has the original 360?
Also, the black color looks awesome.

I think you should get it. Find a way to get money. Whether that means getting a job, or gambling your savings at a casino, or extorting lunch money from first graders, do what you need to do (Kidding about the last two).

If you don't have a 360 already, it's a good idea to get the Elite.
120GB HDD FTW!
I fucking love abbreviations.

Ugh, if i was a rich bastard, i would buy the Elite. 120GB hard drive and a black color theme. Oh, it just hurts me just thinking about it. But 479 is over my budget, and i have no income source currently.
As much as i would love the prospect of getting a job, my dad would not let me. He would be afraid that it will interfere with my school work, and i got to keep those grades up for scholarships.
The only money i have is from holidays and birthdays from over fourteen years. I have saved up enough money to buy two, maybe three 360's but lately moneys been tight around my family and i have been giving some to my mom so she can buy neccessities for her and grandma. Not to mention, i had a nasty spending habit at the begining of high school, so my "egg nest" has been decimated pretty badly.
So the only way i can afford this is buy shopping around and looking for discounts. The game Dead Rising, i know i can find a discount by buying a used copy, as for the memory card i'm not to sure. The core system i could probbaly save around 10 bucks, hopefully more on it.

Zeltaris has been pwnt. The only reason why I would buy a 360 is for Halo 3 and that's not coming out till November.

If I had the money I'd get a 360. The only reason I'll probably have one by fall is for Halo 3. Make sure that if money is tight you look around for a game that you can play a lot because it will likely be the only one. And not all games are backwards compatible between the first xbox and the 360...I think. Anyways, look around on ebay or something, I managed to find a PC game pad shaped like a 360 controller on there for around 5 dollars. And I definitely recommend used games, most of the games I have are used and I've had nearly all of them for at least 10 months (with the exception of the two I just got last week).
However, if money is tight, don't spend it on a 360. Spend it on something you need, maybe a better hard drive for your computer for more processing power. I dunno, if you're not a hardcore gamer, I wouldn't try squeezing a game system into your budget, it's just not necessary. (not to bash video games, I'm a hardcore gamer, but I'm also a realist)

The bad thing about consoles is that they have a life span of like 4 years, then they roll out the new system (might be different this time maybe not), while a PC can be upgraded, heaps of games, dont have to worry about it "losing the console war".
But if u really want one go for it, im more of a console gamer then a PC gamer, mainly because i only recently got a "Worthy" PC (LOL).
If u were rich, u could go a WII60, (a WII and a 360 = less then a PS3), hopefully one day i can get the "60" lol.
The only reason I'll probably have one by fall is for Halo 3.
whatever u do, dont make one game be the reason to buy any console, sure its halo but it is one game...

I'm the proud owner of a... *ahem* SNES!!!
Yeah, i bought it last night around 10:30 at our local Fred Meyers. I would have waited a little longer and shopped for a used console and games, but i couldn't contain myself. Not to mention my friends mom was with us, so i could get a free ride from them at that moment, and i feel like i would get mugged by somebody if i took the bus or walked home. The favorite part of buying the 360 was when the cashier said:
"Have fun with that Kid."
Then another guy said "No doubt that kid will have fun."
I bought Dead Rising with it, and within minutes of entering the house i plugged wires and controllers left and right into the console. My hands were shaking with excitement. Unfortunately since i came home so late, i couldn't play my 360 in the living room where our big 24" TV is (Dad was sleeping), so i had to settle with a 12" TV in my room. The problem with that small of a TV wasn't intended for Dead Rising and i had trouble reading the text in the game. Everything else would be fine, but the text was so tiny it seemed impossible to read on that TV.
As for the game itself, I love it. It may not scare me shitless as i thought it would, but there are moments when the game gets to you. Like a cinematic where every night at 7:00 the Zombies get stronger and they obtain these terrifying red eyes. And the survival instinct as you grab whatever you can to defend yourself. I love grabbing potted plants and smashing them over a Zombies head, or tease them by loading up on CD's and flinging at there head.
But the only complaint i have about it is perhaps this janitor named Otis. He provides you with useful information at the worst times. You could be surrounded by a mob of Zombies and he starts bothering you on your Walkie Talkie. And every time you hang up on him, he calls back saying something like "Its rude to hang up on people!" I mean, its like "Hello? Do you realize that i am about to be eaten or shot in the head by a crazy survivor? Why don't you just leave a message the next time Otis? No fuck you, my legs getting gnawed on and i won't listen to your story about your wife!"
Hehe...

I think you mean Gears of War. I've played it several times myself at my friends house. It's an amazing game. At least the multiplayer is. Definitely getting it if I get my 360 over the summer.

Actually, the 360 Elite does NOT come with HD DVD standard. You still have to buy the add-on drive unit, which is an extra $200 and is unfortunately still only painted to match the original system. Unless you're a total junkie about audio/video quality, the Elite isn't worth it, just buy the hard drive and you're set.
The hard drive really is nice though, TheAzn, you might want to consider buying one once you have some cash saved up.
