View Full Version : How to remove a failed installation?

Hello,
I wanted to install Unreal 2: The Awakening on my computer, but while I was at 60%, the computer rebooted (it does that randomly at times)... So, I attempted to reinstall the game, but every time I try, it only offers to uninstall the previous installation... Is there any way for me to remove the failed installation so I can install it again?
Thanks in advance,
TH

Try ininstalling the "previous installation" first. If it was far enough along it should allow you to do that and then you can install cleanly again.

If that doesn't work then it's a much more tedious task of removing all the files then picking through your registry until you find and delete the key that's saying it's already installed.

I've already tried that... Every time I try to reinstall, it will automatically go to the uninstall interface... I've also been suggested to delete the folder, then use a program called RegClean to remove the registry for that install, then reboot, and then it might work...
I'll try that now... Hope it works...

Apparently that didn't work... I allowed it to fix the registry, but afterwards, the same thing happened...

heh, looks like your computer dont like you XD

I take it when it comes to the uninstall interface, when it tries to uninstall it it says something like 'file missing'?

a bit off topic, but do you know the reason why your computer reboots?

If possible, find the files that the game needs from the CD. Copy them in, and the proceed with the uninstall. (Copying the whole CD's contents ot the UII directory might work instead of searching for a file list)

Nono, when it comes to the uninstall interface, it jumps from 0% to 100% and says uninstallation successful. Every time...
And I tried to find the reason, but no luck yet... I'm not much of a pro with computers either :concern:...

Similar happened to me when initially installing Blood Omen 2. I uninstalled it, went to remove the remaining files and folder directory, left the registry alone ('cause it should be the last thing you try to mess with before trying again) and in the 2nd attempt it worked. Maybe you should try to do this too. ;)

What anti-virus do you use? Nod 32? It restarts the PC randomly (or seizes it+peripherals)
Whenever ppl have such problems installing a game usually the CD/Image is damaged..

Maybe you should try switching off auto-reboot and see the actual bluescreen you're getting? (It HAS to be a bluescreen if you ask me..)
If you want to try that go to My Computer Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery and find the "Automatically Restart" check-box. Then try installing the game.

Please tell me you've tried installing a few times and didn't wrote this after the first attempt :(

Meh, I usually select the folder and thrash it. It's then gone forever.
But then , I have a Mac. :P

Why won't it let you install something twice though? That's kind odd imo.

Its Unreal, its bound to be odd.

Like having 2 and more (different) versions of SC installed..

Because it must read some of it's (previous installation) files/registry and then prompts to uninstall instead. Pretty standard if ya ask me. But then again, it's on a PC. ;p

1) Basan, your solution didn't work T_T...
2) I have Symantec Antivirus... Not NOD 32...
3) I've already disabled that auto-reboot feature ago, no bluescreen appears...
4) God hates me...

Symantec, as Norton Anti-Virus? :P If so, you'd be better of with AVG (http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5).

And you did a complete uninstall, removed any remaining files (in the directory you've installed it to) and rebooted the PC. Then when tried to install it again, it didn't work? Weird... :o In my case, it worked like a charm.
I'll have to ponder a bit on it to see how we can solve this.

That image isn't showing. Their server is crapping up on me.
Maybe you should try other hosting service. Many of us here use Neo's Kupatrix Uploader (http://up.kupatrix.com/), which oddly enough is also on the fritz currently. :concern:

And after that registry 'fix' you did and that 2nd install attempt does it show another registry key involving that program? Or it doesn't?
And I think to have the 2nd Unreal (aka Tournament) around here as well, so I'll try to install it (if my low HD free space allows it :P) and try to see how it goes.

You really are a friend... :)
Even considering installing a game just to help me is... well... touching... :)
Now, first of all, I have a later Unreal, NOT tournament... It's Unreal 2: The Awakening...
Second, after I reopened the regedit, I got this (http://up.kupatrix.com/f/101/u2reg.bmp)... Apparently, the registry isn't going away...

Use CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/download/), its excellent for broken stuff in the registry, it will remove the values that are no longer used by Unreal.

Solved issue then? :) And if this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unreal_II:_The_Awakening) was the game, then I really don't have it.
