All of this can be found on StarCraft.Org. But it's currently messed up right now and I think posting them here is a better option to get more feedback.

These are three of my most recent renders. Sorry if I specialize in Terran heavy machinery. All of these were modelled and rendered in 3DS Max 7 and edited, one way or another, in Photoshop CS2.

So tell me what you think of them

The Battlecruiser took me about 3 nights to complete while the Goliath took more than a week. And they both took around 45 - 60 minutes to render.

I'm currently part of the Sons of War 3d graphics team and were planning to use those models on various hero units to add some much needed diversity and variation.

I also uploaded a video on YouTube about 2 weeks ago. I was experimenting wtih the different possibilities of a cutscene cinematic.

Not bad. Tell me, did you make all the textures yourself? How long have you been modeling?

Yeah, I assembled the textures by myself, although the JPEG metal-plating photo came along with 3ds Max. The face on the Goliath was pretty hard to make, though. I used Photoshop on it before UV mapping it on the head.

I've been modelling for about 8 months now.

Wow, very good work. The shapes could use a bit more polishing, but overall you're excellent. Learn texturing and bump mapping and make them ships look more real than real!

Wow. I mean, wow. I've tried to do things like that in the past, but my attempts usually phail, hard. I'm more of a photoshop kinda guy :P

But yeah, good work. The ships themselves are excellent, though in certain areas they look a little...polished? Like, overly shiny. Not that shiny is bad or anything >.> If you want realism though, grime them up a bit more. Other than that, keep at it.

Technicly, you can't get max7 anymore. The latest version is 9 which costs a grand ol total of $3,495. (unless you get the shotty student version which is like $300)

Ummm one thing, the goliath's cock pit is supposed to be over to one side more than the other. And his left leg should face you a little more.
The cockpit is also flat.

The cockpit is also flat.
And where did you get that info? If the Goliath's cockpit was placed a little to the left or right, how would it balance itself when walking?

They were the ORIGINAL Blizzard renders and the exact same models used for the sprites. And you'll notice that the cockpit isn't flat.

God...honestly this stuff is amazing. How'd you learn? School? Tutorials? Hours of staring at a blank screen? The best I've ever done is, well, crap by comparison.

If you could point me in the right direction for learning I'd really appreciate it. I have Maya, but wherever you got your stuff I'm sure they'll have maya too.

3ds Max has a whole set of awsome tutorials. But I also learned things from various websites, like how to make that realistic terrain. I don't know about Maya, sorry. But there are lots of Maya tutorials out there.

Eh, you've done better imo.

The siege mode convert was nicely done so kudo's for that. (lucky bastard. animated tank tracks in blender are nearly impossible. :P) However that seems to be about the only place where you really focused on detailed geometry. And the tank over all seems extraordinarily "boxy". The SC unit sprites aren't even that square.

However if you painted all those textures on your own then I'd really like to know where you're learning that.

Yeah. I have to admit that the tank is quite boxy. But it was really a challenge trying to make the conversion as realistic as possible without straying away from the in-game tank.

The only parts of the textures that I've actually done in an image editing program is the dominion logo, which isn't even made by me (it was done by Jake48.2), and the yellow and black warning colors on the plasma cannon. 3ds Max came with alot of texture JPEGs that I just mixed up to create what you see right now. But I needed to set the shader to METAL to make it look metallic.

However, the Terrain is a different story. I learned that from here:

Nice job on the TH. The only thing I don't like is the "hunter killer" decal. IMO, it should be on each side and made smaller. You need to remember the scale of those things. Such a big decal like that makes the ship itself seem smaller than it actually may be.

And now that I look at it a little bit more, the cockpit glass would look a little better if it was either darkened (like a dark grey) or, even better, had a goldish tint to it. (not too strong on the gold though)

The rest of it looks great though.

You'd be surprised. Gold RayMirror/EvMap can look pretty amazing on a blue sky background. So long as you keep the effect subtle.

right, well, what program do you use for the 3d modeling?

I use 3ds max 9 for modelling the armor and equipment. And Mudbox v1.0 for modelling the male body.

3ds max is simply the best 3d program ever IMO. It's what Blizzard uses in their cimenatics.

I like the design. Simple, elegant, stealthy. Great Job. One of these days I'll get a machine that can handle a better 3d app. Blender's great but modeling things like really fine lines and details is a chore.

And I'm guessing you designed the rifle in ImageReady? (looks really vector)

Nope. I drew that with pencil on paper first, then traced it on tracing paper with a drawing pen.

The rifle looks great. But the current scene setup shows that the face isn't really too great. Obviously you're not going to see it in game. However if you plan to feature this guy in any cinematics then you're going to need to refine the face a little more. I suggest either making a complete face or actually make it look like he's wearing a mask. (right now he just looks like a velvet mannequin)
