A couple of Diablo II Questions

In Diablo II, and Diablo II Lord of Destruction, can you change the name of a character you have? If not in the main menu, somehow by changing file names or by getting a 3rd party app?
Cause when I first installed D2, I decided to start exploring the characters by playing a bit of each. But when I played the amazon I liked its gameplay style, but the problem is that I had named her a not so serious name. And I want to change it without having to start a new character from scratch.

Also, when you uninstall D2 and reinstall it, do you lose your characters? is there somehow you can bring your characters with you when you wanna play at the LAN?

You can download a program called ATMA V. It is a third party program that allows you to view your character files, import and export items from one character to another and change your characters name. However, it only applys for single player because this program would be considered a form of cheating on Battle net.

As for transferring your characters, look into your Diablo 2 file in Program files. Under the Save folder, you will find at least a dozen files i believe (nine files of a character, a map file, then some other two)then you can copy all of these files onto a portable hard drive (or whatever method you are using) and paste them into the save folder of another computer. If you don't have a blank Cd or hard drive, e-mailing the files to yourself is always a sure way of getting them onto another computer.

^LIES!!! I failed my 3d Modeling and Animation project because I had the same bright idea. XD

My school's network and hotmail apparently had a nasty fight the night before my class date and decided that they'd make me waste $300 by showing up to school that day and not having anything to... well... show for it. What I mean by this is... Some silly chinese guys named Sunny & Chere-Tzu wrote this bogus story about 6 billion years ago relating to making fine art during a big sweaty war... Ya anyhoo, they said something in there about having contingencies for your contincengies, so you should always have a backup (As well as a backup for your backup). The character files are pretty small so you could also whip out one of those dinosaur 1.5" floppy disks and it would probably fit them onto there. I haven't seen a pc yet that still doens't support this technology, but I dunno what things are like where you will be heading <.<

And about the character files, I had 4 of them for each of my characters. What I tried is to copy the files to the same folder. The name of the original Amazon was "Bigs". So I now had "Copy of Bigs.map" "Copy of Bigs.d2s" etc. I changed the names of to "Vressaolyn.map" for all four files (while keeping the extension of each file of course). When I entered D2, there was a new Amazon character that was exactly like (level and gear) Bigs but was called Vressaolyn. But when I entered the ingame part of D2, Vressaolyn had the default start-of-the-game gear, and was level 1 :(
So are you guys sure that the files can be transfered?

You have to use ATMA to change the name of your character. You cannot just rename the file.

I have a strange habit of placing "Fat" as a prefix for most of my characters. "FatBarbarian, FatPally, FatSorc, TheFatCook..."

I can never keep my character names serious, i even named my Pally "ZealotOfBBQ"

The only character who i try to name seriously are Amazons, i just don't know why, but that is the only character that i don't want to screw up on. It's just strange.

I end up naming most of my characters after friends, and i usually get a funny reaction when i bring that character into a game where they are. I have a sorc named "RandMMinder" and whenever somebody talks to me they say "hey randy..." both of us say "what" because we both think that person is addressing one of us.
