I'm trying to set up a Local Area Network between two computers -- one, a really crappy old thing running Windows 98, and the computer I just built, running Ubuntu Linux. I thought it would be a rather straight foreword process... but it's not. Keep in mind, though, that I've never done this before -- the closest I've gotten is setting up a StarCraft LAN party. And that was easy -- just plug in the cables, launch SC, and play for 10 straight hours.
Anyways, what I'm mainly trying to accomplish is getting my Ubuntu computer to use the dial-up internet from the computer running 98.
So I need help. With everything, pretty much.

First things first: is your older computer running Windows 98 First Edition or Second Edition? If the OS doesn't specify, then it's probably first edition, in which case what you're trying to accomplish won't happen, at least not with ease.
Only Windows 98 Second Edition and later (Windows) OSes are equipped with Internet Connection Sharing capability out-of-the-box, so you'd either have to dig up a third-party software to share the internet connection from Windows 98 F.E.
If you do have Second Edition, then your first step is to get the two computers successfully networked together. Duh. They've got to be able to communicate to each other, otherwise the venture may be dead on the launch pad. This website (http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/ics_98) provides a walkthrough (though a bit jargon-y, at times) of setting up internet connection sharing on a Win98SE machine. These (http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/ics_other) are the comparatively simple instructions they give on setting up your Linux computer to receive the connection.
