I doubt there is anything wrong with the components of your laptop.
Sounds like you have developed some corruptions amongst your system files, or picked up some spy ware or picked up a virus, or all 3.
Go here. http://www.ubcd4win.com
Download the latest disk image and burn it to CD.
Boot up from the cd and you will have an OS running from the CD with many tools that can not be affected by what is on your hard drive. As all files are burnt to the cd and cant be changed.
Ports of many different types of anti-spy ware software, anti-virus software, burning software, search and replace, network configuration, web browser, registry editors/cleaners, password retrieval, key retrieval, Windows admin account creation. Etc.
You can do a great deal with it and it makes it all as easy as a click of a button.
It configures half of your RAM as a ram drive so you are able to use the update feature of each software and obtain the latest definitions for use.
EDIT: I just noticed they no longer provide disk images for download.
Go to this page http://www.ubcd4win.com/howto.htm
There are step by step instructions on how to build it.
All you need is a copy of WindowsXP home or pro and the UBCDforWin set up file.

hmm... so if follow all the instructions for this software, i can remove most corruptions that are on my harddrive/OS and my computer will stop crashing spontaneously? i read through most of the website and it looks like good news for me
but i still have no idea what a "build" is or what this software does...
and it is a system files error as the computer shuts itself off at odd times... especially when running a CD

Oops, forgot to add this.
All you have to do to "build" the util disk is copy the window's setup files to your hard drive, put a blank disk in your burner, run the UBCDforWin software and show it where the setup files are, then click build. The default settings will do you until you get the hang of the software.
I use these disks for almost all my professional work on PC's. They save time, you don't need to install anything, just boot and go and there bloody powerful.
It's best to use WindowsXP SP2 (Home or Pro, doesn’t matter), if you do not have a copy of SP2 go here (Click) (http://www.theeldergeek.com/slipstreamed_xpsp2_cd.htm) for instructions on how to infuse SP2 in to your windows setup files.

You may find a lot of your issues where heat related. I recommend carrying on with the UBCD all the same, using it will teach you a great deal.
Once it is burnt just boot up with cd, then put a few tools through there paces, ant-spyware, anti-virus.
Should be good as new afterwards.

well (by my point of view)
A fresh install should wipe everything, but make sure you virus scan EVERY file you plan to put on CD/Portable HDD. and scan your exsisting cds as well.
I Use AVG free for my virus scans
