As the release of the now non-existent SC2 looms on the far, distorted, and cloudy horizons, I must ask: When SC2 is released, what will you do about it?
Not camp out waiting for it, but will you buy it and play online, or will you try and play more of the original? I'd say a similar problem faces players of Team Fortress Classic, with #2 due out at the end of the year.
Also, from what I've heard, there will be a new "Kerrigan" race. This, to me, would stop me from buying SCII. SC1 has everything perfectly done, and a new race would ruin it. "Kerrigan" Race. Pah. They might as well have just had the Terrans and Protoss in SC1, and added the Zerg in SC2.
Personally though, I'm sticking with SC1 until SCIII comes out, if it does.

well if you say there is a kerrigan race you must have also heard of the rumour that blizzard will shut down sc1's bn to promote sc2. you won't have much choice unless someone or some group decides to host a bn server and database.

Well, I'm still working on SoW, so I'd be upset if Blizzard shut down the original SC battle.net, as I'm very involved with playing the original. Still, if SC2 came out I wouldn't be able to resist buying it, even just to watch the cinematics and never play the game again. I don't think that the rumor is true because Blizzard usually releases a trailer, announces that the game's coming in a couple of years and releases a beta 5 years later. :D

....when SC2 Comes out the problem would be is that....there would be new strats....some people might not even like it making it a BIG FLOP which I REALLY HOPE WONT HAPPEN.......but I would choose SC2....for the game and the story

Warcraft 1: you had to build roads, and races were very similiar. footmen and grunts even had the same HP and damage.

Warcraft 2: no more roads (thank god) and races played fairly different.

warcraft 3: 2 new races, each race plays completely different, the addition of heros for the first time in any RTS, and some of the sexiest graphics at the time.

I didn't play warcraft 1, but I heard about it some. The point is, every time blizzard releases a sequel, it's a different game. SC1 was obviously a great game, however, SC2 will promise more strategic features. Blizzard always takes a game and evolves it for the sequel. I will buy sc2 because I think it will be fresh blood on the rts scene. I am tired of all of the cookie cutter strats, and I want to grow with sc2 like I couldn't do for wc3 and sc1.

i think that people will flock to the release of sc2 an it will also attract new fans but i think that when sc2 is released blizz shouldnt stop producing sc and scbw because eager new fans want to know wat happened first

when wc3 was released it was THE game to hav because it was so good the only reason no one went to buy the oldre ones (wc1&2) bcaus they suked sooooo much in comparison

they should sell them in war chests like wc1,2&2expansion and sc&scbw they will make a lot of money be happy and then focus on something else 4 a while

i ov course will by it becaus i just want to know wat happens next, that and the fact there will probably be a hybrids race

I'll probabally play through 1 race's campaign in SC2 and then play it online. I will always keep SC1. It is my favorite game of all time.

I doubt Blizzard will shut down SC1's Battlenet. It would cut down on the still considerable sales it's getting. Even today, there are servers of WC2 running so SC1 should be no different. Since each game is different, the older ones will keep runnning. WC1 doesn't have Bnet because it was made before the invention, then again WC2 was as well but updated.

And there is a 50% chance it would be a flop....some people might even HATE it...just because it' the most awaited...doesn't mean it's gonna be good....so Blizzard will still keep B.net SC1....and if it is gonna be great...it's gonna take a looooong time to finish....due to the issue of balance...

Blizzard never said they would cut down battle.net, nor did the korean site that posted the whole news thing. There was one person who made a comment along the lines of:
"Starcraft 1 will be such a big competitor to Starcraft 2, that Blizzard will probably kill SC1"
"How will they kill SC1? Shut down B.net?"
Then one person took it as fact, another beleived it, etc. etc.

Why choose when you can have both?

I for one will buy my copy of SC II and play it mostly for the novelty factor, cos online competition is going to be weak at the beginning. Then, if I need more of a challenge or just feel like some oldschool gaming, I can revert to SC II.

I think a lot of you are forgetting the history of StarCraft.
When StarCraft was released it was alright, many aspects of it sucked, it was not very balanced at all, Blizzard continued working on it, then after an amazing amount of post-release research Blizzard released Broodwar, witch balanced it out and more or less perfected it.
I think we can expect the same sort of effort on SC2 when and if it is released.
Blizzard won't just release it and go there you are that's SC2.
A year later there will be a finely researched expansion, preceded and followed by patch after patch.
If they announce it on May 19th, then I am looking forward to another ten years of awesome gaming.

This may be a really dumb question, as I havn't been on the scene for long, but... What did BW do to balance upon the OG SC? Sure, everyone now has some uber units... but that is all i see. no tweaking, balancing, etc.

Does Distruption Web really make Toss and Terran Balanced? Or were they balanced before? Or is the simple additions of variety power units make up for each races strengths and weaknesses to create a more competitive envirmonet? It seems to me that BW is just too cookie cutter, as some smart guy said.

someone please tell me I'm wrong. My mind has been altered by friends and I don't know what to do!

Fair enough, what cloakable unit did the Zerg have in the original SC? Plus Zerg was weak in the Air. Devourer took care of that.

What could protoss cloak with out an arbiter? (Excluding of corse the observer)

3 rows of Terran missile turrets was impenetrable by a huge fleet of carriers, enter the corsair.

Many use to say Terran had no real "Big Hit". Then they added the medic witch makes Terran marines devastating.

There were lots of balance issues in the original.

In vanilla SC, Z is unstoppable in ZvT because infantry are worthless without medics, muta own metal build, and 2port wraith could be easily countered by hydra/muta/ling. If you even survived to late game as T, dark swarm is absolutely killer, since you can't regen health for infantry, and metal is way too slow and bulky.

Then again, ZvP is still kind of imbal. but DT harasses and adding in the sair (stupid Bisu built -_-) make it much better than vanilla.

I like the way you state the last paragraph. I think Starcraft 2 will be very different than the original, but to me that is a great thing. If I want to play Starcraft (original) I will play Starcraft, if I want to play Starcaft 2 (new game) I will play Starcraft 2. I don't like it when companies make essentially the same game with updates (Doom 3). Blizzard knows what they are doing, and I trust them.

Agreed with all accounts. I want something different, ofcourse pieces will be the same and should be. But all in all the game should feel different. Otherwise I could just go play SC, read the story of SC2 on the internet and save myself 45 euros.

I want SC2 to either be totally new (not copying ideas from other RTS games like I see way too often in this theories section) or very similar to the first two.

I don't want any SC-themed BFME or SupCom.
