ShadowRun Job Offer
Location: Denver, The Treaty City (Formerly Denver, Colorado)
Payout: 75,000 to 150,000 Nuyen
Employer: The Triad.
Mission: One of our inside contacts at a Novatech plant in Denver has discovered a weakness in the system and we now have a prime opportunity to exploit it. On Thursday at 8:00 am (that is 10 days from the time of this post) a truck will leave the Novatech factory in Denver headed for the elven nation or Tir'Na'Nog. On that truck, among the other mundane cargo, we have confirmed that one of the boxes will contain 10 of the new Novatech Slimcase-10 Cyberdecks. These decks are the new 'top of the line' in decking and in research, and retail value is over 50,000 Nuyen each. We want you to highjack that truck before it ever leaves Denver, and we will pay standard fencing money (1/4 retail value) for each deck you bring us, the truck and any other cargo on board will also be yours.
Layout: This job can be performed anywhere within the city of Denver, between the Novatech plant and the airport. Denver is the perfect city for a job such as this: During the last American War, the Confederated American States (CAS), Native American Nations (NAN), and the United Canadian and American States (UCAS) fought over most of the western North American continent. When a cease-fire was finally reached, the city of Denver was made into a Treaty City and became sort of like Berlin after World War Two, Except Berlin only had one wall.... and it pretty much stayed where it was.
Denver was actually split into thirds, with the UCAS, CAS, and NAN all having one third of the city as sovereign territory. What that means is that the CAS police force cannot cross into UCAS territory without risking an international incident. Political tensions being what they are today between the UCAS and the CAS, anyone crossing the borders had better be a smuggler or have permission. And that is where Novatech made the mistake that will cost them 10 Slimcases.

Name: Nagaretsu
Age: 37 years
Type: Mage(Specializes in fire)
Equipment: Blood red vest, steel scale layer underneath vest, loose black pants of an unknown material, and a steel staff with a gem placed onto the end and ornate embossings of fire.
Background: Nagaretsu lived normally as a civilian in an Irish village, free of both magic and implants. Born without magic, and living in magic-based Ireland, he was raised as a farmer. A rogue adept summoned a storm of immense power, both natural and magical. This storm brewed in the skies, spreading fear to the section of Ireland it was isolated in. Lightning spewed forth, burning the land and people, the storm too far in its construction to stop, you could only let its course run through. Nagaretsu had been taking sanctuary in a cave on the side of a large hill, until the rain flooded the land, and Nagaretsu was forced to move uphill. Lightning rained from the heavens, striking him, burning the land around him, the rain vanishing as it hit. The magic of the storm thundered through him, causing irreversible damage to his mind. Upon awakening, he had forgotten all his past life, incurably insane. A thirst for fire flooded his being. He fled Ireland to the states, and went through his existence filling his desires by doing shadowruns, burning whoever came in his path.

Character:
Name: Shawn Valley
Gender: Male
Occupation: Refuse, and utility truck driver.
Age: 19
Class: Rigger
Equipment:
Weapon: Semi-automatic Shotgun, small calibre, nickel plated handgun handed down from his father.
Clothing: Typical grunge outfit, Denim overalls stained brown, work gloves, usually shirtless, heavy black boots, goggles to keep trash out of his eyes.
Appearance: Shawn is Caucasian, with golden blond hair, and an intensely blue right eye, his left eye was replaced with his VCR(Vehicle Controll rig) I/O jack, specializes in the operation of the mammoth 4 kilometre long garbage trucks used by the various corporations to remove waste from the archologies.
Intro:
Shawn connected his VCR to the dashboard of the trash rig, and accessed his profile on the DDH(Denver Data Haven.)
"One new message," a female voice announced. Shawn decided to open it, it was from an employer he desperatly needed a job from and was his last hope of getting the 10,000 Nuyen he was short to drive his way out of this damned city. However at the sight of the subject of the message, Shawn broke down in tears. "We're sorry to inform you, Mr. Valley that..." Was as far as he read before Shawn tore the cable from his eye socket. The pain was immense, and Shawn passed out.
Awakening from the blackness Shawn found himself lying face down in a puddle of blood next to his truck. Looking up at the beast of a machine which Shawn had spent so many years painting, and maintaining, tears welled up in his eyes. "I'm goign to have to sell her," he thought, lost in his own helpless situation. Shawn and his father had constructed the cabin of the rig when Shawn was 12, and together they purchased the seperate holding containers, it was when Shawn was 15 that he was first able to drive it, and he got his implants. And it was while Shawn was away on his first job that his father had died, reading a book, in the big armchair in the livingroom, a bullet hole the size of a grape in his forhead. Of course the culprit had never been officially found, but Shawn had a good idea who it was.
There was a bike gang in the area notorious for heinous deeds like this one, and this time they would not escape unpunnished. The gang was a viscious bunch of thieves and swindlers, however they were in need of a rigger as they were short one driver for their raids. This is where Shawn inserted himself into the group, and found he had a natural knack for motorcycles. by the age of 18 Shawn was high enough within their organisation that he could request a private meeting with the boss, and it was at this meeting, in the location Shawn had specifide, that he exacted his revenge.
The leader of the biker's, Rickardo, AKA, Smooze, arrived on scedule, and Shawn took invited him into the abandoed apartment complex Shawn had been claiming was his home. Up to the 11th floor Shawn led the bastard up, and invited him to take a seat. There was only one chair in the room, the chair Shawn's father had been killed in. Shawn watched the man's eyes widen with fear as he saw the chair and reached for his gun.
"I said, TAKE A GOD DAMN SEAT!" Shawn yelled, as menacingly as possible, raising Smooze's gun, level with his forehead. "It's about time I returned the favor."
A loud bang echoed accross the rotten land, and bikers swarmed into the abandoned complex. However all they found there was their leader shot through the head. Shawn had set up ropes and had traversed all the way down the out side of the building, he had reversed the locks on all the doors in the entire building, and had drenched the entire thing, from ceiling to floor with the last of the gasoline from the gas station his father had run. Lighting a match Shawn lit the trail of gasoline at his feet. The flame sped off to the building 20 metres awak and engulphed it in flame. The terrifired shreiks of those inside permeated the sticky brown landscape.
Shawn thought back to the time he had spent with his father working on the truck and decided that he could never part with her. He reconnected to the DDH and ran a frantic search fro jobs. There was only one which promised the neccessary cash.

Shawn was about to reply when a second message was added just below the first. All that the new message contained was a link. Shawn decided to follow the link in another window, and went back to writing his reply.
He was about to hit the post button when the thread about the job was closed.
No surprise, it had probably been filled already, and threads about jobs for shadow runners were often closed, then deleted in order to keep the employers and the shadowrunners secure. Shawn switched windows to the link, which was rapidly forwarding him to pages which forwarded him again and then self deleted.
Finally after about an hour of forwarding one window remained, in it was a job description.

Dear Sirs,
Pre-run meeting will be held in three days at a club called the 'Busted Dollar'* in downtown UCAS-Denver. Meeting will begin at 8:00 PM, tell the bouncer at the door you are with the 'Triangle' party and you will be directed to the meeting room.
Weapons are strictly controlled at this facility. Come armed at your own risk, and know that any disruption at the meeting will cause this offer to be terminated.
I look forward to working with you.
Signed;
Mr Johnson, Triad.

*Referencing the old United States monetary unit, the Dollar, which lost all value with the adoption of Nuyen as the global monetary unit.
(OOC: I will post all the intel you will have available tonight. For right now, just show up at the bar. The Busted Dollar is a tecno-blues club and known runner hang-out with a good rep for both safety and discretion. Private meeting rooms in the back are used for this kind of meeting all the time, so any checking on it should calm any fears. Mr Johnson, in this instance, is a former runner himself that has moved up in the Triad... he will be wearing an expensive business suit custom tailored to fit over Cyberware arms.)
Character Notes:
Nagaretsu (OOC: Dark_Soul74) sounds like he would make a terrific Shaman instead of a mage. they have basically the same kinds of powers except a Shaman manipulates magic by 'feel' where a mage casts set spells. they are equally powerful, but as your character was never trained as a mage, he sounds more like a shaman. There is a idol spirit known as the 'Fire-Bringer', or you follow the Wyrm totem, or even the Nature totem of the sun or lightning. send me a PM if you want more info on one of the totems, or you could stay as a mage.

Crash got the message about the meeting in the 'Busted Dollar' and that he had got the job. Therefore he made a quick deck and made a bank machine spit out a ton of money. With this he went to buy equipment. Crash walked down the many allyways until he came to a small shop that was very hard to notice, he pushed open the metal door and a gun was immediatly pointed to his head
"Who are you?"
"Crash Overide"
"Prove it."
Crash got out his deck.
"So you are Crash! "
The man lowered his gun "What are you lookin for"
"I need fibrewire that cannot be detected by security, a custom version of the W2000 Sniper Rifle and a small tripod for this scope" He holds up the scope.
"Okay melad."
The man walkes into the back room. Crash looks aroung the cramped, dark shop. The room was small and square with black walls and mould and wallpaper peeling off. The counter was small and had a tiny cash machine with receipts and cheques nailed to it. Suddenely, the shopowner came back from the room carrying all three items.
"Thatll be 1000 nyuen!"
Crash thought how amazingly cheap this was but he bought it all the same. Crash handed over the money, stepped outside, put the tripod in an inside coat pocket, the fibrewire in his boot and he strapped the rifle to his back. After this he walked on to find out where the Busted Dollar was.

The Shadow stepped into the dusty store. He looked around & thought, "Where is he when you need him?"
All of a sudden, The Shadow gets tackled from behind. There is a small struggle, & The Shadow calmly stated to the small figure, "Now, now. Is that anyway to treat an old friend?"
The figure stopped squirming, & screamed, "The Shadow! Oh thank GOD it's you! They're after me! Gotta get outta here fast!"
The Shadow pinned the tiny man to the floor & asked, "WHO is after you? If you tell me, I might be able to help."
The man hopped up, & said hurriedly, "Nope. Mustn't bring you into this mess. Now, are you here for something, or did you stop by to say hi?"
The Shadow said, "I am here for supplies. I have..." The tiny man cut him off, saying, "See? I knew it. I knew you were here for something. What do ya need, sonny?"
The Shadow states, "I need to 'borrow' a new vest of kevlar. My own was kinda shot up on my last run. I also need enough guns to fill my pockets, yet not weigh me down. And, just for the hell of it, I would like to take THAT," The Shadow points over the man's head, & the man says, "How did I know you were going to say that? Alright, give me a few moments," the man walks into the back room, & walks out minutes later wheeling a cart of guns, & holding an odd-looking suit. The man explains, "Okay. Take as many guns as you want. This little thing I made will work wonders for you..." The man tells The Shado about the features of this suit. Afterwards, The Shadow goes to the back room, & puts on the suit, which fits him perfectly, then The Shadow takes around 50,000 nuyens worth of weaponry, & leaves.

"Thank you for coming. I am sure you have read the initial report in the job offer, please pay attention as I elaborate. I do not wish to repeat myself.
"The Confederated States of America, the CAS, has employed the private security firm called 'Lone Star' to provide security for this transport. As I am sure you are aware, Lone Star is the bane of all ShadowRuns. They are crack troops, highly trained and licensed to use lethal force in their basic contract. The truck being used to transfer the shipment is a Lone Star Citymaster 2000, a veritable fortress on wheels. Two rotating turrents on the top provide air support, with an additional turrent on each side for ground defense.
"This would normally be enough, because Lone Star had travel, pusuit and extradition arrangements for the NAN, CAS, and UCAS. If anyone did take the Citymaster, airial units and assault drones could respond to any threat in an average of 160 seconds. Lethal force permits were cleared with each of the three countries, and Lone Star won the law enforcement contract with all three territories last year.
"The problem is in UCAS Congressional Resolution 43, which takes effect immediately in response to Lone Star involvement in a CAS spy ring. UCAS millitary troops have taken over all contacts with Lone Star declaring martial law in most areas. While that isn't much of a change in Law Enfocement practice, it does bear one major fault. Lone Star personal are strictly forbidden from crossing into UCAS territory.
"Any pursuit will have to be called off at the border on the UCAS. The City of Denver, UCAS, is aware of our plan and will take no action against you, and in fact, they will be marshalling full support for your escape. Certain members of the Denver UCAS millitary are quite eager for Lone Star to break the unsteady truce that exists, and will be more than willing to view any pusuit by Lone Star into their territory as an openly hostile act. That gives us approximately 160 second to disable the van and get across the UCAS border before Lone Star can respond in force.
"The Citymaster will not be an easy target, however. The only areas not covered by the turrents are a direct frontal assault or a direct rear assault. You will have to use caution, guile, and above all, speed to take over the van and escape across the UCAS border. The closest their projected path will take them is one mile. Assuming we can gain control of the vehicle, we have one mile to cover in order to escape pursuit. In 160 seconds.
"The payout is 75,000 guaranteed, or the value of the fenced merchandise, whichever is greater. This is a high-pay, high-risk run. I will try to answer any questions you may have, then I hope to see you in the UCAS. If you have no questions, then I wish you the best of luck."

OOC: How powerful are my flames? Would I be able to melt the turrets if I focus all of my energies on them for a long enough period? The time involved in melting a turrent would be negligable. The problem you will be faced with is the mental and physical drain of fucusing that much mana through your body.... if you do not maintain strict control and concentration, the flames of the magic you are directing could very well take you out with the turrent. Even if you manage to keep from bursting into flames, you would be severly tired and probably suffer first or second degree burns.
It is not a bad idea, though. Just understand that if you choose to take out a turrent in that manner, then that will likely be the only action you will be able to accomplish via magic on this mission. It would probably be easier to use fire to set the amunition inside the turrent off... that will disable the turrent and quite likely blow a hole in the side or top of the Citymaster. Plus you will be using less magic to accomplish the same goal. Setting a fire that small should not even tire your mage.
Once you get a rigger jacked into the Citymaster, he can mentally attack the driving rigger to take control of the vehicle. At that point, the race is on.
"Would their truck pull over for weigh stations and the like, or would they overlook those?" Shawn asks. The Citymaster will not be stopping at any weigh stations on the planned route... in fact, it will not be leaving the busy city roads except for a few minutes on the freeway out to the airport.
However, the city roads are not without frequent stops. Red lights and traffic jams would provide ample opportunity to attack while the Citymaster is stopped. The Citymaster 2000 is capable of driving over and through other traffic, so once we are in control of the vehicle traffic jams will either get out of our way or be crushed beneath it. This is another good reason that we do not want to be the ones chasing that truck.

(OOC: I still don't know all the in's and out's of magic, so....How much control do I have over where my magic forms? Do I have to form it directly touching me, or is there a set distance or something?)
(OOC: Magic in Shadowrun... from the Mage's view... is the term for controlling and directing mana to produce certain effects. All living things produce mana, you, me, airborn microbes, insects, everything.... it is kind of like the force in star wars. But it is more limited and more versitile than the force... when you affect mana, you draw the mana around you through your body, shape it into the froper form or spell, and then release it... that is where problems start. It is very taxing on your body to draw in this mana, and depending on how much mana you draw and what shape you form it into, when you release it you could damage yourself. Since Mana is life, it if far easier to effect a living thing (or something that was once living) than an unliving (metal or glass and plastic) thing.
Magic in Shadowrun.... from the Shaman's view... is a gift from you totem spirit. It provides you with power to direct how you will, but feel. You can use it to cast all the same spells as a mage, in fact, you are effectively using the same mana as a mage, but your totem give certain bonuses if we were plaing on paper... in your case, fire manipulation and combat spells would have dice bonuses, while water and telepathy spells would have penalties.
You can cast a spell on anyone you can see (in person, not through video or TV). The glass of a windshield or a glass dorr would not stop or even slow down you spell, which brings me to the next question.....)
"If I were to shoot the glass in an attempt to kill the driver, would the bullet get through?"no. in fact, there is no windshield. the truck is purely sensor driven... a rigger inside the vehicle is jacked in, and 'sees' through the trucks high-tech sensor array. Thermal, infared, radar and cameras are his eyes and ears while he is riding the Citymaster. In order to take out the driver, you will have to break into the vehicle and kill his meat-body or jack into the Citymaster and engage him in mental combat. There is also a GPS on board, so it will be impossible to hide before pursuit commences. The GPS can be disabled, but it will have to be located and destroyed... which will take more than the 160 seconds for pusuit to arrive.
"True. True. Is there a known weakpoint in the tuck like... i dunno.... the petrol tank?"
The Citymaster 2000 is a fortress. To call anything a 'weak point' would be misleading. The fuel tanks are electric capacitors, so there is no chance of blowing them up. The turrent attack should work... or you could try bluffing your way in.
You could take out the driver in his home before he picks up the load... then enter the facility as him and let them give you the truck. When you deviate from your planned route, pursuit will still be initiated, but you would be in a fully operational Citymaster to defend yourself. The main difficulty with this plan is that you would need to hack the Novatech plant in order to forge the proper electronic ID passes for picking up the shipment, or hack the Lone Star offices to substitute your own ID for the driver's. Both plans would be difficult, possibly more difficult than a direct assault on the Citymaster because it must be done quietly without arrousing suspicion.... however, a fully armed and undamaged Citymaster is worth well over 500,000 on the black market, making it almost more valuable than the cyberdecks you are after.

"You mentioned that the rigger could take out the driver through, mental combat, what is that exactly, and how does it work?"
* ShawnManX silently awaits a reply.
A rigger could plug directly into any dataport on the vehicle ad long as it is connected to the main computer (it could be anything from a radio control port to a gunnery computer on one of the turrents). At that point, two riggers now have access to the system, and it becomes a test of wills to take full control of the vehicle. Almost like a mental tug-o-war... each rigger pushes the other, then push back. The reason it is a contest of wills, though is because of what happens if you both don't stop. You are plugging your Vehicle Control Rig directly into the target vehicle and creating a direct neural feed into the main computer.... if you lose in combat like this, the feedback will fry you central nervous system and leave you a vegetable. This makes rigger vs rigger combat like a giant game of chicken... are you willing to risk your brain?
Fortunately, most security riggers are not. Especially in this particular case, where the rigger driving the Citymaster will be fairly sure that pursuit is coming and he will be rescued instead of being doomed. You would lay 5 to 1 odds that he will 'jack out' of the vehicle if you manage to gain a data port rather than risk his mind in mental conbat with you.
Last note on this... it all happens at the speed of thought... so if you gain a data port (say... by blowing out one of the turrents and jacking in to the manual fire port) you estimate 30 to 45 seconds to hook up your VCR and another 5 or 10 for the Lone Star rigger to panic and jack out, leaving you in complete control of the vehicle. of course... that will have to be fast, probably as fast as you have ever attempted to jack in to a vehicle. and there is always the risk that the Lone Star rigger could be a fucking cowboy who wants to go down with the ship... If this were a pencil and paper game, there is a slight chance that either or both sides will survive the first push against each other... but you sure as hell won't be coherent for about an hour or so if you do.
Much different than that is Remote-hacking a drone. you need a remote control deck and a 'groundhog' drone. The groundhog as a signal detector and relay point, so it detects the proper channel, and you can use a remote control deck to access the drone's command functions. At that point, one of two things could happen... If the security rigger is paying very close attention, he can create a neural feedback into your deck and give you a little jolt, knocking you out of his drone. If the security rigger isn't fast enough, you can re-route the command path and then the groundhog can cut off the other riggers command... essentially giving him a jolt... and stealing a drone from his network. It is not nearly as dangerous because you are not directly jacking into a drone, you are using a remote deck.

"What use would my skills as a decker be?"
A decker copuld have several options on this run...
you could hack the Novatech or the Lone Star security system or personel files, substituting your ID or the rigger's ID for the driver of the Citymaster, then take out the driver the night bewfore the run and just walk in and take the Citymaster right at the source.
You could slice the municipal traffic system to create a roadblock or to clear the roads for your escape route.
You could hack the Lone Star drone control computers and alter their GPS tracking, so when they attempt to track the citymaster, they will go in the wrong direction. Or you could disrupt the automated targeting programs to have them attack eachother or the other pursuit drones. Disrupting the drones in this manner will not stop them, but if the rigger controlling the drones is not paying attention and lets the drone on-board computers direct the pursuit and combat... it could be deadly for them. You can't actually take control of the drones, like a rigger could... but you can mess with the on-board computers.
and then there is always the inevitable excape... you could just supply cover fire and distractions for the pursuit. Decking may be your strong suit, but you can certainly still fire a gun.
The primary reason a decker would want to be involved in this run is that you could pick up one of the Slimcase-10's. It is the state-of-the-art cyberdeck at this time, and picking it up essentially free would be quite a score.
OOC: Wat kind of magic does an adept have?
An adept's magic is focused within. Mana is a part of your body and has effected changes within to make it better. Improved senses, strength, dexterity, speed, toughness, combat skill, a 'sixth sense', focused energy in your palms to create stunning or deadly punches... these are a few adept abilities.
You options on a run like this would be possible stealth... you could sneak on board the Citymaster before it leaves the Novatech plant, and then at a pre-arranged time eliminate the rigger driving the Citymaster and open the doors for the rest of the team.
you will also be responsible for eliminating any on-board security during the assault, and depending on how well the riggers do with the pursuit drones and turrents you will probably also face a few of them. Bring along the big guns.
