Are there any free MMORPG games...? I just wanted to take the whole MMORPG thing for a test drive. I'm not sure how long I can stay this excited without some satisfaction...

I've played a variety of MMO games, and I must say, there are VERY FEW that are 100% free. Your best bet would be to try the demos (some of the demos are really long :D). You could also search for open betas of games.
A few games I know are 100% free (or in open beta stages):
DarkEden : http://www.darkeden.com/en/
Dark and Light : http://www.darkandlight.com/ (Needs Application)
Fung Wan Online : http://fwo.edenii.com/
Priston Tale : http://eng.pristontale.com/
Other games with good trials:
Asheron's Call 2 : http://www.microsoft.com/games/ac2/default.asp?c=0
ShadowBane : http://www.shadowbane.com/us/index.php (Requires credit card for identification)
A Tale in the Desert : http://www.ataleinthedesert.com/ (A crafting/ secondary skills MMO - 24 hour gameplay trial)
Prince of Qin : http://poq.khabal.com/
Dark Age of Camelot : http://www.darkageofcamelot.com/
Anarchy Online : http://www.anarchy-online.com/
Ultima Online : http://downloads.ign.com/objects/573/573032.html (this is a download page) Site is here: http://www.uo.com
Finally, the games I know are fun, but may not fit into MMO:
GunBound: http://gunbound.net/
Soldat : http://www.soldat.pl/main.php

Ha... I don't know whether that's a way to get me to look at ads, or whether it's really true there are ads that advertise MMORPGs...
Anyway, I can't wait to try. Soon.

I tried Astonia III. It's great, just it's not much of a World of WarCraft. I wonder what game there is to play next...

I played it for a while RIGHT when it was available for open beta. At the time the servers weren't exactly spiffy and it just really annoyed me. I was basically disconnected every few minutes. They better now? I may get back into it . . .

Yeah, as far as I can see there is no bugs in this game. Though there is about a 1 second delay when picking up items and such.

YAY! I ADVERTISED IT!
It's a fine economy game, free right now, and free when it will be full. Right now I am in the closed beta testing, but there's a public one aswell. It's called a-tarctor, but that was way back in 0.0.1 when the only availible vehicle as a tractor. PLAY IT! It's fun. And complicated. At the start, anyway. Mention me!

If you're only interested in reading the reply to the topic, then only read the first paragraph.
Well, if you want to try an MMORPG game without a monthly fee, then buy Everquest, and the first month's free. It costs $30, but you won't have to pay a monthly fee til the second month, and it comes with 5 expansion packs. Most $50 games I beat in less than a week or two, so I think $30 for a month of gaming is worth it. Or, if you want, you can pay $120 to get EQ, with all of its expansions, and a month of subscription. Its almost a $250 value.
Which brings up another issue: why do a lot people, who complain about paying a $6 monthly fee for Phantasy Star Online (I don't have the game myself, but... well, keep listening), JUMP at the chance at getting the X-box live pack, which costs $70 and gets you a year of online play for the X-box? I mean, it's essentially the same thing, just twenty cents less each month. Why complain about a monthly fee then go out of your way to get essentially the same thing, just with a different label?

Honestly I think paying to play a multiplayer game is just rediculas. Having to pay for it at the store is good enough, but then having to pay to play? I don't think so. Thats just fcking lame. I'd never..."never"...pay to play. Even if it's the best, I still won't. Thats just dumb.

Unlike technology giants such as MSN, Yahoo, and Google, gaming companies such as Blizzard do not have the money to maintain dedicated servers that require near constant upgrades, maintenance, and vigilence. If they don't charge for playing games such as WoW, then the servers would inevitably decay as glitches were found and not fixed.

Yea well, thats why there's a thing called Advertising, and making better games. And secondly, there's more than one way to get money...by selling other things Blizzard related. Such as shirts, hats, etc etc. And other little things that would make big bucks. But no, their just money grubbing twits. I'm sorry but it's true. They don't care about the gamers, they just care about their stupid program. Do you now know, the only way to get your password back is through D2 or WC3? And you can't get it back any other way? You know what that means? That they just plain don't give a shit. Another thing, they don't "get involved in the private channels." You know what that also means? They just plain don't give a shit. Now there's your answers pal. I am 21 years old, and I have been on Battle Net since 1996. And did it ever change? No it did not. Blizzard has never changed. You know why? Because in that business, there is just a line of money grubbing over powered fucks just looking for more power to take away more of our freedom. Now, imagine if they were our government. Blizzard has it's head so far in it's ass, they dunno shit at all. And if people don't see that, then their ignorant (which is 80% of America's population). There's my 2 cents. Have a nice day.

That, my friend, is two cents. Informed thinking and ranting is always a plus. Stop overreacting and get used to the fact that games will now cost money. That's life, I got over it years ago, I encourage you to also get over it.
Well I think the reason everyone makes it a big deal is because Blizzard never charged money for Multiplayer games and that is one of the aspects that made made starcraft successful. Yes, I understand that there will be a lot of bugs and stuff, but then how is Arena.net able to make Guild Wars?
Just to make it clear, if I ever feel the urge to get a MMORPG, I am going to get Guild Wars, because it has no monthly subscription fee.

Ooh. Considering they do sell Blizzard, SC, WC and Diablo T-shirts, CinematicDVDs, MousePads, Action Figures and other random junk (http://shop.blizzard.com/section5/?user=L6H7wmb7GdFdXa53TSP3Yny6Sz4kUepFKxxKahwrNBI= ) I think you just prooved that you don't know jack!!
Check your facts next time. I don't give a crap how long you've been on B.net, WoW requires a totally different type of server than any of Blizzard's previous games. Thanks for being an ass.
You need to chill and think about what you are saying before you say it.

Yeah, I don't think advertising could cover the costs of WoW. I mean, $12 per person, and 3000 people per server, means that each server gets $48,000 a month. They'd have to have too many ads and sell an unhealthy amount of action figures to get that amount of cash per server.
